Hundreds of talented dancers from across the Southwest will step into the spotlight at the annual Sun City Dance Classic at the El Paso County Coliseum, located at 4100 East Paisano.
The Sun City Dance Classic has been showcasing the area’s best dancers since 2008. It was created to offer area performers an avenue to feature their talents.
That first year, 25 dancers participated. Last year, on its 10th anniversary, more than 600 dancers took part.
“The participation increases each year,” said Monica Perez, director and founder of the Sun City Dance Classic. “I am so proud that I have been able to establish a forum to showcase talent in El Paso and surrounding areas. It is a truly enjoyable event.”
The exciting, longtime dance competition will feature 18 dance categories, including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, krumping, ballroom, folklórico, tap, contemporary and a variety of other styles.
There will be three age divisions – junior (5-12), senior (13-18) and adult (19 and above) and six dance divisions – solos, duets, trios, small groups, large groups and production groups.
Dancers are vying for the chance to earn the prestigious title of Grand Champion and a cash award, as well as the highly sought-after championship banner.
Prizes also will be given to the first-, second- and third-place winners.
The event will get underway at 5 p.m. Friday, February 22, and will continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, and 11 a.m. on Sunday, February 24.
Tickets are $10 each day and $25 for a three-day pass, and are available at the door.
