Applications for 2017-18 Sun Court Due by Friday

The Sun Bowl Association reminds all that are eligible about the deadline to turn in applications for the 2017-18 Sun Court.  The final day to send in applications for the Sun Court is Friday, June 23.

“The Sun Court plays a vital role in our organization making appearances throughout the city of El Paso, including visits to places such as the El Paso Children’s hospital,” Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas said.

According to the 1938 Sun Bowl game program, “The social side of the Sun Carnival centers around the Coronation of the Sun Queen with Ladies-In-Waiting and her Royal Court of Princesses from all the cities of the Sun Empire and the Grand Ball tendered by the Association in honor of Her Majesty and Court.”

In the early years of the coronation, about 30 young women were part of the formal coronation, and each participant represented an organization.

Today, from eight-to-10 or more individuals are chosen for the court, including one queen. Selection is based on poise, appearance, personality, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of El Paso.

The Sun Court serves as ambassadors for the city of El Paso. Those on the court volunteer at various community events and make appearances at the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade, WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, Hyundai Sun Bowl Game, Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament, the Helen of Troy Sun Court Charm Camp as well as other events throughout the year.

Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students, have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.5, may not hold any other title during the time they are members of the Sun Court.

All those interested in joining the 2017-18 Sun Court can download the application from the Sun Court Website.
