The Second Annual Teen Fit Program launched this month to encourage El Paso area youth and their families to stay active and eat healthy foods. The program is sponsored by Superior HealthPlan in partnership with El Paso Parks & Recreation and Texas A&M AgriLife
During a kickoff event this month, 100 participating El Paso teens were provided healthy tracking devices while they also joined their families and other community members for a nutritional cooking class. It’s all part of the Teen Fit Program, an initiative that encourages students and their families to participate in healthy activities. During the spring and summer, participants will track their levels of activity to meet a goal of 640,000 steps. Prizes will be awarded to the most active participants.
“At Superior, we’re committed to improving both the physical and mental health of Texans through active local involvement,” said Dr. David Harmon, Chief Medical Director at Superior HealthPlan. “That’s why we have partnered with local organizations in El Paso to get kids and their families moving, combat social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and encourage community members to engage in healthy eating habits.”
As part of the program, walking and running events will be organized by El Paso Parks & Recreation, offering participants a healthy and safe environment to compete. Superior funded last year’s program with a $5,000 sponsorship. This year, a $6,000 sponsorship will allow the program to be expanded to include students’ families so they can join participants during the competitions.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Superior Health Plan in encouraging and improving our community’s health, especially for our youth,” said Ben Fyffe, Cultural Affairs and Recreation Managing Director at El Paso Parks & Recreation.
In addition to the physical activity program, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Better Living for Texans Program will host nutritional cooking classes for participants and interested community members. The classes will be held on the second Saturday of every month, starting in May, at Veterans Recreation Center of El Paso.
