Christian Bergman pitched five shutout innings in the Tacoma Rainiers’ 7-2 opening night win over the El Paso Chihuahuas at Cheney Stadium Tuesday. Bergman has thrown 19 career innings versus El Paso and has yet to allow an earned run.
Tyler O’Neill’s solo home run in the bottom of the first gave Tacoma an early lead. The Rainiers added two runs in the bottom of the third, including a solo home run by Gordon Beckham, his first career Triple-A homer.
The Rainiers plated a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to build up a 7-0 lead.
Jose Pirela had an RBI groundout and Nick Buss hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to put El Paso on the scoreboard and end a 16-inning scoreless streak dating back to Monday’s shutout loss to Las Vegas. Pirela reached base three times Tuesday, with a single and two walks.
Diego Goris started at first base Tuesday and has already played first base, second base, third base and shortstop this season.
