Lincoln Center Supporters Rally Around new TxDoT Plan; Meeting set for Thursday

While the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDoT) has scheduled another public meeting regarding new connectors to I-10 and US54, supporters of the preservation of the Lincoln Center are lobbying for one specific project to be approved.

Of the 16 alternatives proposed by TxDoT, one – Alternative #11 – is preferred by preservationists and residents alike. It is the one plan which spares the one-time Lincoln School (now shuttered community center) and leaves the many green spaces under the Spaghetti Bowl intact.

According to the Lincoln Park Preservationists, another plan – Alternative #9 – takes too much space away from the vibrant and busyLincoln Park Day-FAV3-SEP2015-0090 “Heart of El Paso.” Via a social media post, organizers shared their reasoning on the selection.

“We want #11 because from 16 alternatives for the I-10 Connect Project TxDOT has narrowed it down to two, Alternative #9 and #11. #9 takes the amphitheater and more of the open space. We feel #11 is the best option. #11 expands a ramp off I-10 by adding several more lanes. That ramp is over the parking lot and will not affect the park area. The amphitheater is important because it is a sacred space for Danzantes.”

The next meeting, scheduled for Thursday at 5pm at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Medical Education Building (5001 El Paso Drive) will be an open-house format, discussing the proposed project’s direct connectors, ramps, and auxiliary lanes and widening existing ramps and direct connectors between I-10, I-110, US 54, and César Chávez Border Highway (Loop 375).

At the meeting, several options will be laid out for the public to see, while TxDoT officials provide information about the proposed project and gather input from the public on the recommended preferred alternative.

Once complete, TxDoT official swill evaluate public comments to further refine the recommended preferred alternative, and initiate environmental investigations.
