Video: TNTM’s Doom Patrol | Jane Patrol kinda spoilery review

Episode 9 is by far our favorite episode of season 1. This episode is very focused on Crazy Jane’s mind. After her Karen persona gets pulled back into the Underground (this is what they call Jane’s mind), none of the personalities wants to go to the surface (what they call being the dominant personality). This causes her body to go into a catatonic state.

Robotman is able to enter her mind through Negative Man’s energy. Once inside her mind we see that some of the personalities look like Jane and others do not. We are introduced to a few new personalities that haven’t gone to the surface. Most of them do not like going to the surface as they find the real world stressful to deal with.

We also find out that the personalities are able to commit suicide by going to the well. One of the personalities, Miranda, had done that. Miranda’s station is filled with lots of dark and gory imagery. Jane is at the end of her rope and is going to visit the well to end it all.

Robotman is able to track her down to the well and helps her face the root of all her problems. As a child she was sexually abused by her father. She repressed all those memories until years later she was again sexually abused by a priest at a church. This explains her hatred of the church in the Nurnheim episode.

With Robotman’s help, Jane is able to stave off the suicidal tendencies for now. When Jane pops back to the surface we discover the others had some sort of kerfuffle. I imagine we will find out what happened with them in a future episode.

Do you agree with us that this is the best episode so far? Do you also think it should have been aired sooner in the line up? Let us know in the comments below.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

Video+Info: Kinda spoiler-free review Doom Patrol episode 8

We mentioned Danny the Street a few episodes back and now we finally get to meet him.

Danny is a non-binary, gender-queer, sentient street.  He has the ability to teleport anywhere and blend into existing streets seamlessly.  He communicates through different signs on the street.  He plays host to a myriad group of characters who have been shunned by society.  In return for them living on Danny Street, they do their best to keep him happy and entertained.

Another of Crazy Jane’s personalities is introduced in this episode. We meet Karen who is obsessed with romantic comedy (romcom) movies.  Every time her personality is in charge she runs off to get back together with her boyfriend just like in the movies.  We find out her powers are kinda like a hypnotizing thing where she flashes her eyes and the people immediately think what she wants.

This was another episode of What is Cyborg contributing to the story.  Eight episodes in and we still believe he could be completely removed from the story with no affect on the plot.  We are really hoping we will get to see some kind of closure to the whole Chief is missing thing before the end of the season.

Do you agree with us that Doom Patrol is weirdly good, but also seems to be dragging a bit right now?  Let us know in the comments.  We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

Video+Story: TNTM’s Doom Patrol episode 7 kinda spoiler-free review

Doom Patrol continues it’s course into Crazyville.  In this episode titled “Therapy Patrol”, our heroes are all suffering from self-doubt that Mr. Nobody implanted in their minds.  We see the first scene played out from each characters point of view.

Robotman is the first to figure out they are falling into the same trap as the original Doom Patrol.  He suggests they all do a group therapy and get their fears and innermost thoughts out in the open so it won’t drive a wedge between the team.

The others reluctantly agree to participate and we learn a little more about their backstories.  Not a lot more is learned, but it does seem to add some texture to their origins.  We also learn that Mr. Nobody is not above using anything to derail their efforts to save the Chief.

We still believe that Cyborg could be taken completely out of this story and it wouldn’t affect it at all.  It seems like Cyborg was thrown in just to add a character that the mainstream audience would recognize.  While it doesn’t really hurt the story, it doesn’t help it either.

Are you watching Doom Patrol?  Do you agree that Cyborg is a fifth wheel on this team? Are you liking all the crazy weirdness we have witnessed in this first half of the season? Let us know in the comments.

And while you’re there please give us a “thumbs up” and share this with all your friends.

Video+Story: TNTM’s kinda spoiler free review of Doom Patrol episode 6

Episode 6 of Doom Patrol delivers much more weirdness, in a good way.

Mr Nobody has sent our reluctant heroes on a search for the “Doom Patrol”. Crazy Jayne uses her Flit personality to take Rita and Negative Man to a school for kids with powers (sound like X-men to you?). At the school they discover that the Doom Patrol (Mento, Celsius, and Lodestone) have faced off against Mr Nobody in the past.

This encounter left them all mentally unbalanced. In fact, they are all being heavily medicated and living in an illusion in order to keep them from going off the deep end and using their powers indiscriminately.

The Doom Patrol’s caretaker, Tempest, tells them Mr Nobody sent them to the school so they would see what would happen if they went against him. Mr Nobody loves playing the mind games.

We also see Cyborg’s dad finally cut the apron strings and let Cyborg be his own person rather than trying to dictate and forcefully guide him in life. Robot Man and Cyborg bound a little in this episode, but we still can’t figure out exactly why Cyborg is in Doom Patrol.

I think Patrick has it right that Cyborg was written in as an afterthought as all his scenes could really be deleted and the story wouldn’t be affected. Cyborg is the Jar-Jar Binks of Doom Patrol.

Do you agree with our assessment of episode 6? Is the show weird but good for you or is it too much over the top for you to enjoy? Let us know in the comments.

Video+Kinda Spoiler-Free Review: Doom Patrol episode 5 on DC Universe

We are now on episode 5 of what we like to call “Why is Cyborg here”. This episode is titled Paw Patrol for a reason you will find out later.

At the end of episode 4 we saw Mr. Nobody forging a kinda truce with The Chief in order to stop the Decreator. The only reason Mr. Nobody agreed is if there is nothing left he can’t rule over it.

This episode has a lot of Crazy Jane’s Doctor Harrison persona. The Chief and Mr. Nobody go back in time and have her create a cult to oppose the Decreator. Mr. Nobody names this entity…. The Recreator. Admittedly not one for catchy names. Their plan works and the Decreator is stopped from destroying all things.

We get to see a little more about The Chief, like his relationship to Baphomet, A little more about Rita’s emotions is dealt with, Negative Man has another pity party for himself, Robot Man does a bit more swearing, and Cyborg takes up space without really contributing again.

This was not our favorite episode, but it is still a pretty good episode in comparison to other shows on TV. Doom Patrol is a weird show just like it’s namesake comic book. The characters are really starting to discover themselves and we are introduced to new characters each week. We also get to see new Crazy Jayne personalities quite a bit.

Doom Patrol has been a good series so far and there are still ten episodes left in the season. DC Universe has another hit on their hands with this show. Do you agree with us that Doom Patrol is a really good series or do you think it is just meh? Let us know in the comments.

Video: TNTM’s kinda spoiler free review for Doom Patrol Episode 4

Episode 4 of Doom Patrol drags us a little deeper into the weirdness.  Our intrepid heroes put their search for the Chief on the back burner while they help Willoughby Kipling avert the Apocalypse. Who is Willoughby Kipling?  Glad you asked.

He is a member of the Knights Templar.  He uses chaos magic to get the job done.  He has a history with the Chief which is how he ends up with the Doom Patrol.  If Willoughby gives off some Constantine vibes… that is intended.

Back when DC tried to keep Vertigo characters separate from their DC characters, Grant Morrison wanted to use Constantine in his Doom Patrol story.  DC Comics told him nope.  So he did the next best thing and invented a similar character to fit his needs.

We get a little bit more backstory on Larry Trainor/Negative Man.  We also see Rita start using her elastic stretchy powers rather than just becoming a gelatinous blob.  Another of Crazy Jane’s personalities comes out as well. The episode ends in a cliff-hanger so we will have to wait until next week to see if the Doom Patrol is able to stop the Cult of the Unwritten Book from summoning the Decreator and ending the world as we know it.

How are you liking Doom Patrol so far?  Is the weirdness enjoyable or do you find it too over the top?  Let us know in the comments.

Video+Story: TNMT’s kinda spoiler-free review of Doom Patrol EP3 on DC Universe

DC Universe pushed out Doom Patrol episode 3 and hoo boy… It keeps getting weirder.  It is weird in a good way, though.

We are still wondering just what Cyborg is doing in this story. We are considering Cyborg the Jar-Jar Binks of Doom Patrol.

In this episode more is revealed about Larry Trainor’s relationship with the entity (Negative Man) inside him. We also get a little glimpse of the connection between the Chief and Eric Morden (Mr. Nobody).

Most importantly we see the Evil Nazi mastermind that created Mr. Nobody. He has turned his skill into a theme park where prospective villains can come and pay to receive the super power they’d like to have.

We are still liking the show, just not Cyborg. Again, Cyborg seems like he is forced into the story. Nothing about having Cyborg in Doom Patrol feels right. Unfortunately, it looks like we are stuck with him at least for most of Season One. Somebody please tell Batman to call him up to the Justice League so we don’t have to keep seeing him.

Have you been watching Doom Patrol? Are you liking the weirdness like us or do you not care for the series? Let us know in the comments.

Video: Doom Patrol episode 2 on DC Universe kinda spoiler free review

Doom Patrol is a new series on the DC Universe streaming service. They are a misfit group of reluctant heroes. The first episode was released February 15, 2019. It was a good episode even with having to explain all the characters backstories.

Episode 2 started right where episode 1 left off. They introduced a new character to the mix, Cyborg. Most people will recognize him from the Justice League movie. Him being part of the Doom Patrol team feels kinda forced to us. He is not a good fit on this team. The whole dynamic of the team is changed with him in the picture.

Even with us not liking the addition of Cyborg, episode 2 was still really solid. The narration by Alan Tudyk is spot-on. There are a lot of subtle little things he says that are meta, but if you aren’t paying close attention you may miss them.

So far, Doom Patrol has been worth the monthly subscription price to DC Universe. That doesn’t take into account the other great shows and all the comics that are available on this service. Titans and Young Justice are definitely must watch shows as well. You don’t have to take our word for it, take advantage of the one week trial subscription and see for yourself (just remember to stop the recurring billing if you don’t want to continue past the free trial).

We highly recommend Doom Patrol. Only 2 episodes in and we are already hooked. Give it a watch and let us know what you think in the comments.

Video+Info: TNTM’s Doom Patrol Episode 1 on DC Universe kinda spoiler-free review

Doom Patrol has been around since the 1960’s yet they aren’t part of the mainstream DC Universe of characters. Their line-up has changed over the years with Robotman (Cliff Steele) being the only character in every iteration.

They are a group of super-powered misfits whose “gifts” caused them alienation and trauma. They were given the moniker of the “World’s Strangest Heroes” and they wore the mantle well. At the end of their original series run they were all killed off. But as you know, no one stays dead in the comics… except Uncle Ben.

When they announced that Doom Patrol would be one of the new exclusive series for DC Universe I was a bit skeptical. This is a team of unsung and sparsely used characters from DC’s line-up. Then I saw the early pictures of what Robotman looked like and I moved from skepticism to outright disbelief that the show would work.

Nevertheless, I gave the first episode a chance because I desperately wanted to see some new DC characters break into the mainstream. After finishing the first episode I decided to binge-marathon the whole series. I was disappointed when I discovered that DC Universe was releasing the episodes one each week rather than all at once like Netflix. Oh, the unfairness of it all.

DC Universe has a potential hit on their hands with Doom Patrol. The voice acting of Brendan Fraser was much better than I expected. He gave emotion to a non-moving robot face. Alan Tudyk was… well, he was Alan Tudyk. I really enjoy watching him bring characters to life. You might also recognize an old James Bond actor in Doom Patrol. Timothy Dalton plays the man who brings them all together, the Chief.

If you haven’t seen the first episode of Doom Patrol yet, you should. The first episode does a lot of character introduction and it still keeps you wanting to see more. If the rest of the season is just as good, I will be renewing my DC Universe membership.

Do you agree with us that Doom Patrol is gonna be a hit for DC Universe? Or do you think we’ve lost our mind saying it is good? Let us know in the comments.
