UTEP Soccer’s Davis Named To NSCAA Senior College Women’s Scholar All-America Team

UTEP soccer senior Aleah Davis has been voted to the 2016 NSCAA Senior Women’s College Scholar All-America Team, it was announced by the organization Thursday.

Davis becomes the first Miner to receive a scholar-athlete award from the NSCAA. Overall it marks the sixth individual national Scholar-Athlete honor in program history. Davis joins previous honorees Denise Jeske (USAA All-American-1996), Brenda Fierro (Arthur Ashe Jr.-1998 and 1999) and Ja’net Esparza (Arthur Ashe Jr.-1999).

To even be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, start more than 50 percent of the contests and be a significant contribution to the team.

“UTEP Soccer is super proud of Aleah!” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “This is the highest honor a player could receive since it is based on excellence in both the classroom and soccer field.  I am so thankful for Aleah’s superb leadership and how she has represented UTEP Soccer exceptionally well.”

It is the latest honor and a fitting conclusion to the career for Davis, who previously became the lone Miner in program history to reap both All-Conference and All-Region accolades for all four years.

As a senior Davis helped the Miners record their most victories (13) since 2009, match the program single-season standard for shutouts (11) and advance to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championships.

Davis started all 22 matches on the year, piling up six goals and eight assists for 20 points. She had a flair for the dramatic with five game-winning tallies, and amazingly her six goals came on a total of only 17 shots on target.

The Hewitt, Texas, native helped control tempo with her play and was a weapon with her long throw-ins. That was never more prominent in 2016 than when she set up Jeanna Mullen’s game-winning goal in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Championships to lift UTEP past No. 2 seed Rice, 1-0. Davis also made an impact on defense with her ability to win balls in the air, which aided in the team matching the school shutout record.

Davis continued to thrive in the classroom, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.44 while majoring in kinesiology. She is on track to graduate from UTEP in May 2017.

UTEP Soccer’s Davis & Crenshaw Secure All-Region Honors

UTEP soccer senior Aleah Davis (second team) and freshman Lauren Crenshaw (third team) have secured NSCAA All-Central Region honors, it was revealed by the organization Tuesday afternoon.

It is a historic accomplishment for Davis, who concludes her career as the only Miner to garner both All-Conference and All-Region accolades for all for years.

Crenshaw’s feat is also impressive, as she was one of only two freshmen in the region to be so distinguished. Additionally she is the fifth player in school history to secure All-Region recognition as a freshman.

UTEP has now placed at least one student-athlete on the All-Region team for a school-record sixth straight season.

“I am so proud of Aleah and Lauren to be recognized as two of the top players in the central region,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “This is a huge honor as our region is made of up so many strong soccer programs including the Big 12 teams. Aleah moved up to second team, and Lauren is one of only two freshman on this entire list. I am very thankful and appreciative of Aleah’s senior leadership, and Lauren coming in as a freshman and making such an immediate impact. Both of them trained at a high level from day one in training camp. I know that Aleah and Lauren recognize that individual honors are the result of the entire team’s effort, and that there teammates are a huge reason why they received this prestigious award.”

The duo helped the Miners post their most wins (13) since 2009, equal the program single-season standard for shutouts (11) and advance to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championships.

Davis also made an impact on defense with her ability to win balls in the air, which helped UTEP post a school-record tying 11 shutouts on the season.

Crenshaw played with a maturity beyond her years as a freshman. She was one of five Miners-and the only freshman on the team- to start all 22 contests. The defender logged the third-most minutes (1851) on the team and played with tremendous grit and determination.

She also showed off an innate ability to jump into the offensive attack at the perfect time, which resulted in one goal and a trio of assists.

UTEP’s Davis Tabbed As C-USA Preseason Co-Defensive Player Of The Year

IRVING, Texas – UTEP senior Aleah Davis has been named as a Conference USA Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Davis shares the honor with Florida Atlantic’s Erica Burt and Rice’s Jasmine Isokpunwu while Charlotte’s Martha Thomas was recognized as the C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

The preseason players of the year, in addition to the 2016 Preseason All C-USA team were selected based upon a vote by the league’s 14 head coaches.

“We’re real proud of Aleah for representing UTEP on the preseason list,” head coach Kevin Cross said. “It’ is great recognition and we look forward to Aleah leading us on the field this year.”

The recognition is well deserved for Davis, who has reaped both All-Region (2013, 2014, 2015-third team) and All C-USA (2014, 2015-first team, 2013-third team) honors in her first three years with the Orange and Blue. Davis is a versatile player who plays either in the midfield or on defense.

She is coming off her most productive offensive campaign to date, having scoring five goals to go along with seven assists (tied fourth C-USA/72nd nation) for a total of 18 points. Davis also made an impact on defense with her play in the air, particularly on corner kicks.

Davis and the rest of the Miners open training camp Wednesday. UTEP will kick off its 2016 season at home in the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Battle of I-10 vs. NM State at 7 p.m. on Aug. 19. The contest, which is the first UTEP athletic department event for the 2016-17 year, will feature a pre-game UTEP Soccer Alumni Association tailgate with free food from Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q while supplies last.
