Department of Public Health Prepares for Back-to-School Vaccination Rush

In order to register for classes thousands of students are required to update their vaccination record and with that in mind, the Department of Public Health is urging parents to contact the Immunization Program as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

“We usually see an average of 800 patients every month,” said Department of Public Health Acting Nursing Program Manager Hiddai Vazquez. “When August comes, that number jumps to more than 2,000 patients a month, and that can get very hectic.”

The increase in patients means it is all the more important for parents to call ahead and schedule a visit. Parents can call the appointment line at (915) 212-6555.

In addition, the Ysleta Health Center, 110 Candelaria Road, will be temporarily closed beginning Monday, July 30 in order to provide more centralized services.

The Immunization Program will be teaming up with the Medicaid Waiver program and the Housing Authority to provide services to our community. A Back-to-School event will take place on Saturday, July 28, at Fabens High School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nurses will be available to review current shot records and ensure students are up to date.
