TNTM: Yellow Lantern Predator and Joker Alien from NECA

Comic book character mash-ups are all the rage at the moment.  Just look at the popularity of Batman Dark Nights Metal.  All the alternate universe Batman’s merged with other superheroes were haunted my nightmares.

Batman Who Laughs has reached the same level of stardom as Bruce Wayne.  People just seem to respond really well to the character merges.  San Diego Comic Con had NECA unveil Batman vs Predator and Superman vs Alien figures.  They have stepped it up for New York Comic Con (NYCC) with two new 2 figure sets.

The first NYCC exclusive set has Predator as a Yellow Lantern (Sinestro Corps) member along with Hal Jordan/Jon Stewart.  If Sinestro was looking for a more perfect addition to the Yellow Lanterns he would be hard pressed to find someone who strikes more fear in your heart than a Predator.

It is based on the 2008 Dark Horse/DC Green Lantern story collaboration.

Predator comes with his Sinestro Corp weapon set a shoulder cannon, a spear, and his retractable throwing blade.  You can even remove his iconic mask to reveal his horrific face. The Green Lantern figure has the ability to use either Hal Jordan or Jon Stewart for the head piece.

The other NECA NYCC exclusive set is the Joker Alien with. It comes with a great accessory assortment.  This action figure 2-pack is inspired by the 1997 Batman/Aliens comic book mini-series co-published by DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics.

The story has Batman face strange new Aliens produced using DNA from some of Arkham Asylum’s deadliest inmates. The very thought of mixing Gotham’s most notorious villains with Aliens is terrifying.

NYCC attendees can buy these action figure sets for $60 each.  If you are unable to attend NYCC, don’t fret.  Non-attendees are able to purchase them online for a little bit more.  New York Comic-Con will run from Oct. 3 to Oct. 6.

TNTM: Batman Day 2019 celebrates 80 years of the Caped Crusader

Batman is undoubtedly one of the most loved and recognizable super heroes.  I am not gonna rehash the origin of Batman.  If you don’t already know that you probably shouldn’t be reading this article.

He made his debut in Detective Comics #27 on March 30, 1939.  DC Comics celebrates Batman Day every year in September.  2019 marks the 80th anniversary of the Dark Knight and DC is throwing a party.

DC Comics has invited the world to celebrate Batman with the official #LongLiveTheBat and #Batman80 hashtags throughout 2019 up to Batman Day on September 21.  The campaign kicked off at SXSW with the release of 1.5 million bats flying from Austin’s Congress Bridge. DC Comics plans to have the Bat Signal light up the sky across major cities worldwide on Batman Day.

They are pulling out all the stops for this 80th anniversary.  Six Flags locations across America will have exclusive Batman experiences and merchandise.  Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Orlando and Sydney will host unique Dark Knight exhibits and photo opportunities. DC is promising an all-out takeover of the airwaves with special marathons of Batman TV shows and movies beginning in March all through September.

There will be special edition comic and graphic novel to commemorate this day as well.

Batman: Nightwalker: The Graphic Novel Batman Day 2019 Special Edition #1 features an excerpt from the upcoming DC graphic novel for young adults based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Marie Lu, adapted by writer Stuart Moore with art and cover by Chris Wildgoose.

The Batman Who Laughs Batman Day 2019 Special Edition #1 reprints the 2017 one-shot spinning out of Dark Nights: Metal, written by James Tynion IV with art by Riley Rossmo and a cover by Jaosn Fabok.  This reprint features a special card stock over-cover with a mask of the Batman Who Laughs!

TNTM: Vampire Batman to make a return in time for Halloween

Although it is not considered canon, there is a very popular story-line from DC Comics ElseWorlds imprint.  The Batman & Dracula trilogy consists of three graphic novels Batman & Dracula: Red Rain (1991), Bloodstorm (1994), and Crimson Mist (1998).

The story begins with Batman discovering Count Dracula and his minions feeding off the homeless of Gotham City. Batman determines he must become a vampire in order to have the strength to defeat Dracula.  He is eventually able to impale Dracula on a tree and drain his blood.

Batman tries to use his new found powers for good, but finds himself overwhelmed by his desire for human blood.  The Joker has taken over the vampire minions in the meantime.  Batman brutally murders the Joker.  Batman asks Alfred Pennyworth and Commissioner Gordon to stake him to prevent him from committing any further atrocities.

The stake is later removed by Alfred during a crime wave.  Batman goes on a murderous rampage and slaughters almost all of his old foes.  Two-Face and Killer Croc attempt to kill Batman, but are no match for him.  At the end, Batman walks into the sunlight to end it all.

The Batman & Dracula books were some of the most popular titles of the Elseworlds line.  Each of the books made their way to the Diamond Comic Distributors bestsellers list.  Now that you know the backstory on Red Rain Batman, you will be happy to hear they are bringing him back just in time for Halloween.  Secrets of Sinister House #1 will be on the shelves October 9th and will feature vampire Batman.  This comic will be a one shot, meaning it is not part of a series.

Am I the only one that would love to see the Red Rain trilogy as a movie? Even if it is animated!

TNTM: Batman Who Laughs infecting the DC Universe

Batman Who Laughs instantly became a fan favorite character ever since his first appearance in Dark Nights Metal #2/Teen Titans #12 (they both came out the same week).

We won’t count Dark Days: The Casting #1 since it was just an ad and not part of the story-line.  The creator/writer, Scott Snyder, says the first appearance is Dark Nights Metal #2 since those events occur before the events depicted in Teen Titans #12.  Either book is highly sought after due to the Batman Who Laughs appearance.

For those not in the know, let me explain just Batman Who Laughs.  The Batman Who Laughs is a version of Batman from Earth 22.  In that part of the Multiverse Joker learned Bruce Wayne is actually Batman.  He killed Commissioner Gordon and most of Batman’s villains. Joker then subjected Gotham to the chemicals that transformed him, much like the plot of the original Keaton Batman movie.

Batman fought and killed the Joker, but was exposed to a purified form of the chemicals as a result.  Those chemicals gradually turned him into a new Joker.  By the time Batman figured out what was happening, the process was irreversible. He thus became The Batman Who Laughs.  He killed most of his allies and turned his son, Damian, into a mini-Joker. The Batman Who Laughs becomes a follower of Barbatos and helps in his attempt to take over Prime-Earth (our part of the Multiverse).

The Batman Who Laughs is presumed dead after a battle with Prime-Earth Batman and Joker.  The new teaser for Batman/Superman #1 shows us he is not only alive, but deep into another plan to take over Prime-Earth.  The teaser graphic asks “Who are the Infected?”  It appears he is infecting our superheroes with his Joker chemicals and using them as pawns.  The Year of the Villain initiative is focusing heavily on Batman Who Laughs.  I, for one, couldn’t be happier.

DC’s Year Of The Villain #1 kicked off with a 32-page one-shot. It leads into to some of the biggest story arcs that make up Year of the Villain, with stories by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, plus details on Snyder’s The Batman Who Laughs, Tom King’s “City of Bane” story arc in Batman and the recently announced Batman/Superman by Joshua Williamson and David Marquez.

Joshua Williamson and David Marquez’s Batman/Superman #1 goes on sale August 28.

Official Description

The first arc of Batman/Superman will follow the two titular heroes as they hunt down six infected heroes in the DCU—people revealed to be infected by the Batman Who Laughs with a deadly pathogen that violently transforms them into the evilest versions of themselves. The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel must journey into the depths of Gotham City to learn which of their fellow heroes has been transformed into the horrifying horseman of their most dangerous and deranged foe ever.

But who are the Infected? Fans have already been shown a sneak preview of Batman/Superman #1, revealing that The Batman Who Laughs’ plot is bigger than either the Caped Crusader or the Man of Steel realized and showing the devious killer’s first sentinel: a jacked-up, Dark Multiverse-infected Shazam! Who else has been targeted for similar transformations?

Video: TNTM’s Review – Titans Season 1 on DC Universe streaming

The DC Universe streaming service is really hitting on all cylinders. They started out with having most of their comic book library available under the service.

Then they added all their excellent animated movies/series. Then they started making exclusive series for their streaming service. Titans was the first live action exclusive series they added.

The early trailers for Titans were a bit sketchy. There was the whole “F#@& Batman” scene from Dick Grayson that caused a huge uproar. Then there was Starfire’s questionable outfit that made her look like a streetwalker. We decided to give the streaming service a shot, mostly for the comics and animated series.

We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the Titans series. If you are a DC Comics fan in the slightest you will probably like this series. The story is good, the action is good, and the costumes are believable.

There is a lot of name dropping and cameos in the first season as well. Some of them are in your face while others a little more subtle. Keep your eyes and ears open or you might miss a few of them.

If you are on the fence at all about getting the DC Universe streaming service there is a one week trial period you can use. That is how they hooked me.

Have you watched Titans? Did you enjoy the first season or did you find it meh? Let us know in the comments.
