El Paso Teens Snag top spot in US Polo Association’s Interscholastic Championship

Johann and Niklaus Felhaber, both high school Polo Players from El Paso, lent their athletic talents as part of the Prestonwood Team that won a polo crown in Houston.

The three man team, including Vance Miller III of Dallas, won the The United States Polo Association’s National Interscholastic Championship held in Houston last weekend.

The annual tournament showcased the top teams from across the country.  In the Final, Prestonwood’s skills resulted in their win over Houston A, 13-11.

“Our team came together organically–we’re best friends and we worked hard for two years to get here. We trust each other on the field and play for one another. Nobody is selfish, we really are ‘a band of brothers,” shared Miller.

This marks the second time the team has gotten to the finals. Johann Felhaber (Named tounament MVP) is a Senior at Coronado High School and Niklaus a Junior at Cathedral; Nik’s brother Fritz is on the Texas A&M Polo Team, the reigning USPA Intercollegiate Champions.

The polo community in El Paso is alive and well, as the Border Circuit Polo School at Rancho Naranjo has coached players in the area for many years.

“This is a great family sport and the facilities at Naranjo are ideal for anyone curious about learning to play.” says Yvonne Golston, Polo School Instructor.
