Unique Bracero Summit Focusing on World War II-era Agreement Starts Friday

The National Trust for Historic Preservation and The University of Texas at El Paso will host the first national Bracero History Summit this weekend.

The Summit is set for  Friday, September 22, at UTEP and Saturday, September 23, at Rio Vista Farm in Socorro, Texas.

Barbara Pahl, senior vice president of field services for the National Trust; Yolanda Chávez Leyva, Ph.D., director of the Institute of Oral History and the Borderlands Public History Lab at UTEP; and Victor Reta, City of Socorro recreations centers supervisor, will speak at the media event.

The summit will mark the 75th anniversary of the Bracero Program, a World War II-era agreement that allowed Mexican immigrants to work in the U.S. as guest workers.

The two-day event will bring together experts, scholars, and community members to examine the roots and ongoing influence of the Bracero Program.

The first day of the summit will take place from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the UTEP Union Building East. Activities include educational and panel sessions, a bracero museum exhibition and a bracero documentary short film.

The summit’s second day will start at 10 a.m. in the Rio Vista Community Center, 901 Rio Vista Road, in Socorro. Closing remarks will be at 1:30 p.m.

More information is available online.
