Parks and Recreation Opens Registration for After School Program; Holds Informational Meetings

The City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department has opened registration for its After School Program for the 2017-2018 school year that begins on September 5 and will hold open houses for two  other programs.

The program costs $5 per week per child and is offered at select elementary schools in the El Paso and Ysleta Independent School Districts. Parents may register children ages five through 12 at any City recreation or senior center.

The program starts September 5, with hours from school dismissal to 6 p.m. A healthy snack is served on a daily basis.

The After School Program is designed to keep participants in a safe and fun environment by providing homework space, table games, sports activities, arts and crafts, and much more.

This particular program operates with the support of the Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation.

Officials also invite the public to learn about two other daycare and pre-school services provided at Veterans Recreation Center (5301 Salem Drive | (915) 822-8859 ) and the Galatzan Recreation Center (650 Wallenberg Drive | (915) 842-8754 )

Each location will host an open house at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, August, 18.

Both recreation center locations have competitive rates, and residents may be eligible for discounted rates.

The hours of operation for the daycare are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition, there is a pre-school program from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Registration is now open for both programs and applications will be taken on a first paid basis.

Annual ‘B Strong’ Shoe Giveaway Set for Tuesday; Kids to Receive 500+ Pairs of Shoes

The Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation is holding their annual B STRONG Shoe Giveaway  Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

515 pairs of tennis shoes will be donated to the students at Desert View Elementary School in Sunland Park to help kids B FIT and B STRONG.

“This is our 13th shoe giveaway and one of our favorite days of the year at the Foundation.  The kids learn about ‘B FIT & B STRONG’ and they love to get fitted for new shoes,” said Cindi Aboud, Foundation Director.  “With the weather as nice as it is right now, we hope to set them on the right path for spring.”

Volunteers from the Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation will assist with distribution of socks and help students get fitted for their tennis shoes. Each shoe has a retail value of $50-60, and is always a name brand.

The Foundation purchases the shoes at wholesale prices, amounting to an investment of more than $14,000 for each shoe giveaway.

The B Strong Shoe Giveaway program has positively impacted economically disadvantaged schools by awarding over 6,000 tennis shoes to date.  Each year schools throughout the region are encouraged to apply for the shoe giveaway between August and October.

Schools are chosen based on the percentage of economically disadvantaged that make up their enrollment, and the school’s willingness to encourage their children to participate in the foundation’s “Earned It” program, giving kids the opportunity to earn their shoes through showing good character.

Aoy Elementary, Hart Elementary, LBJ Elementary, Lamar Elementary, Milam Elementary, Roberts Elementary, Travis Elementary, Zavala Elementary, and Childress Elementary are other schools who have received grants from the Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation.

The Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation was established in 2007.  Braden’s spirit is the catalyst behind the organizational theme that seeks to promote and sustain physical fitness in schools and on the playing fields throughout the region.

The continued success of the foundation has drawn widespread awareness to its mission of providing an avenue through sports that will help promote physical fitness, positive self-esteem and lifelong friendships.
