South El Paso Street: Broadway of the Southwest Exhibit Extended Through Oct. 15

Due to popular demand, the El Paso Museum of History announces a two-week extension to the exhibit South El Paso Street: Broadway of the Southwest, which will now run through October 15.

“From capacity crowds who joined the walking tours to learn more about theaters like The Estrella, The Colon and The Plaza, to the visitors who have enjoyed this exhibition, the community’s response to this exhibit has been tremendous,” said David Grabitske, Director of the El Paso Museum of History.

Broadway of the Southwest details the central role El Paso played in cinema films made in both Hollywood and Mexico.

Historic photos, movie posters, artifacts, and associated walking tours provide a glimpse at South El Paso Street, which was once called the Broadway of the Southwest, when the nation transitioned from vaudeville to silent movies to the “talkies” of today.

The Museum of History, located at 510 North Santa Fe Street, will host a series of history talks about El Paso’s classic movie theaters, as well as a family play day with a movie theme.

The final walking tour of South El Paso Street will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, in front of the Plaza Theatre and progress down South El Paso Street, stopping at locations that were once classic El Paso theaters.
