TNTM: Captain Marvel #8 introduces new superhero

Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) has had a rough go of it lately.  She was trapped in an alternate realm with a few other heroines. She managed to break free, but that joy was cut short when the press outed her as a half Kree warrior.

In the new “Falling Star” story-line a new superhero steps in to help Captain Marvel in the midst of a big battle with some alien bad guys.  This new super powered goodie introduces herself as, Star and she looks very familiar.

She holds a strong resemblance to a younger version of Carol Danvers.  That of course is by design.

Captain Marvel artist Carmen Nunez Carnero had the following to say about the familiar look of this new superhero.  “The idea for Star was that she should be like a younger version of Captain Marvel. Somebody for the public to empathize with and see as a new, better Super Hero. Regarding the look, we worked on it a lot—especially the colors that should be elemental to her design. Since her name is ‘Star,’ of course that element should be prominent on her uniform, but it shouldn’t look similar to Captain Marvel or Captain America. After many tests, we finally decided on a classic look—soft lines, bright colors, facemask to preserve her anonymity. The motif that I like most on the suit is how I could integrate the star as part of it, giving shape to her shoulders. “I hope this character becomes a staple of the Marvel Universe, because Star has a lot of potential, and she’s going to give us really unique scenes with Carol.”

Writer Kelly Thompson said: “Star is this mysterious new hero that’s showing up in New York in our ‘Falling Star’ arc. She’s sort of ascending as Carol is suddenly struggling and ‘descending,’ and it creates a lot of weird parallels and insecurities for Carol.  Normally this kind of thing wouldn’t phase Carol at all but in CAPTAIN MARVEL #8, she finds herself quite suddenly in a very low place, so seeing someone, a young blonde someone that sort of reminds her of herself, being perceived as her replacement is hard to take in stride. It feels like one more hit when you don’t have many hits left to give. I expect and hope for Star to be around the Marvel Universe for a long time. I don’t want to say too much or give too much away for the upcoming story, but she’s got a ton of potential just waiting to be explored.”

Captain Marvel #8 has sold out and is slated to go into second printing.  It sounds like they plan to do more development on this character.  She might even stick around for a while.  Who knows, we may just see her get her own title.  If you haven’t snagged your copy yet, run to your local comic shop before they are all gone.

Video: Avengers Endgame review and audience reaction at Alamo Drafthouse

Avengers Endgame is the culmination of a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. This movie really ties up all the loose ends and gives us a really nice end point.

No matter which Marvel movie is your favorite, you will see reference to it in this movie. Avengers End Game is a fun walk down memory lane of Marvel. The final confrontation is an epic battle for the future of the Marvel Universe.

Patrick and I really enjoyed Avengers End Game. It isn’t just us though, everyone we talked to that watched it really loved the movie. We didn’t encounter one bad review. Our only warning is don’t drink too much soda during the movie cuz you won’t want to miss a minute because you have to pee. Even the strongest bladders are tested by this movie.

Do you agree that Avengers End Game gave us a satisfying end to the big Marvel run of movies? Or were you less than thrilled with the movie? Let us know in the comments.

We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

Video+Story: TNTM Talks Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies

Marvel used their movies to build up to the big confrontation in Avengers Infinity War. They teased Thanos here and there throughout their other movies so that when he made his big appearance in Infinity War, most people already knew all about him and what a big threat he is.

We are hoping that Marvel starts building up to another of their epic stories after the Thanos situation is resolved in Avengers Infinity War part 2. They have plenty of great line wide story arcs that would translate nicely to the big screen.

Another thing we are hoping for is to start seeing more crossover between the movies and TV shows. Cross your fingers!

Video+Info: TNTM’s Top 5 Anticipated Comic Book Movies

This is our individual list of top 5 most anticipated upcoming comic book movies.

Jack must have not slept well because he was very cynical of most of the upcoming movies. On the other hand, I enjoyed Green Lantern and the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie. Keep this in mind when going over our lists.

TNTM Marvel Civil War II comic book review

Jack and Troy from ZiaComics.com get all geeky about the new Marvel storyline, Civil War II.

In the first Civil War series, The point of contention was the Superhero/Mutant Registration Act.  For those who aren’t familiar with that story-line, The government wanted all those with mutant powers to register with them.  The government wanted to regulate mutant activity to prevent another disaster occurring as a result of a superhero accident or misuse of power.  Some mutants disagreed with the Act and refused to register.  The Civil War was the pro-registration mutants fighting the anti-registration mutants.

** Warning, spoilers may appear below **

Civil War II is centered around the idea of free will.  An Ohio State University student named Ulysses comes in contact with Terrigen mist.  The mist gives him powers of precognition (like the 3 pre-cogs in the movie Minority Report).  One group of mutants led by Captain Marvel’s includes Captain America (Steve Rogers), War Machine, Spider-Man, Vision, Medusa, Blue Marvel, Winter Soldier, Spectrum, She-Hulk, Hawkeye, and Ant-Man (Scott Lang) wants to use Ulysses to determine crimes and give out punishment BEFORE the actual crime is committed.

A second group of mutants led by Iron Man with teammates Captain America (Sam Wilson), Thor (Jane Foster), Black Panther, Star-Lord, Luke Cage, Hercules, Miss America, Daredevil, Black Widow, Hulk (Amadeus Cho), and Deadpool believes your fate is not pre-determined and punishment cannot be given before a crime.

Ulysses has a precognition about Thanos causing trouble.  War Machine and She-Hulk attempt ambush Thanos.  During the fight Thanos kills War Machine and critically wounds She-Hulk.  Iron Man vows to never let this happen again and kidnaps Ulysses.   In response the Inhumans attack Stark Tower but are stopped by the Avengers. To avoid further incident they agree to confront Iron Man together at the secret facility where he has been running tests on Ulysses.

During the confrontation, Ulysses has a vision of Hulk killing the Avengers. Later, former Hulk Bruce Banner is approached by Captain Marvel at his laboratory outside Alpine, Utah.

All of this is in the first two issues.  It appears Marvel is taking this story-line seriously.  They have already offed fan favorite War Machine and it appears She-Hulk may be following him.  Civil War II so far is an all out brawl with both sides believing deeply that they are right.  If you like story arcs that make you stop and think whose side you’d be on, this is for you.  Some serious thought went into me choosing to side with Iron Man.

I don’t believe a crime can be punished if it is not committed.  There is a strong argument about stopping death/catastrophe if possible as well.  Whose side are you on?
