Infectious Disease researcher lands award at Biomed Conference

Omar Garnica, a researcher at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso), won a presentation award at the 2015 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS).

Garnica was selected for the award for his outstanding oral presentation in the microbiology category. More than 300 abstracts were submitted in the category, but only eight individuals, including Garnica, were selected to receive an award and present their research.

Garnica’s paper was titled “OhrR of Mycobacterium Smegmatis Senses Intracellular Oxidative Stress” and the budding researcher received a check for $250 and a certificate of recognition for his presentation.

Garnica currently works as a medical research technician in the Center of Emphasis in Infectious Diseases under the supervision of Associate Professor Subramanian Dhandayuthapani, Ph.D. He holds a B.A. in biology from the University of Texas at Austin and is hoping to enroll in thePaul L. Foster School of Medicine by 2017.

The ABRCMS is managed by the American Society for Microbiology and is the largest professional conference of its kind in the nation. ABRCMS encourages underrepresented minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, including STEM disciplines.

The 2015 conference was held in Seattle, Washington in mid-November.
