For the second consecutive year, the Downtown Management District (DMD) and the Central Business Association (CBA) have partnered for the “El Segundo Barrio Backback Drive,” an effort to collect backpacks and school supplies for students in the El Segundo Barrio neighborhood of Downtown El Paso. The donated supplies are given to Sacred Heart Parish for distribution.
“The DMD is happy to partner with the CBA to support Sacred Heart Parish in their efforts to provide much needed school supplies to students in El Segundo Barrio. With the time for back to school shopping quickly approaching, the shops on the border bring an experience vastly different than any other in the country. Tax free weekend offers an opportunity for the public to not only save money but enjoy that experience with food, music and entertainment,” said Joe Gudenrath, DMD Executive Director.
Following the backpack drive, a “Back to School Event” will be held in the El Centro District of Downtown El Paso on August 12, 2017 to create a special border shopping experience while enjoying tax-free weekend discounts.
The event, taking place on Fourth St., between El Paso St. and Oregon St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will entertain the public with a fashion show, cosplayers, and princesses, in addition to food vendors, music and a bounce house for children.
El Centro District businesses, Krystal Jeans, and Starr Western Wear are once again are contributing sponsors for the event, in addition to the El Paso Electric Company and T-Mobile.
The DMD and CBA have placed collection boxes at four (4) locations:

Donations for the drive will be accepted at the locations through Thursday, August 10, 2017.
