12th Annual Chalk the Block hits the Streets in Downtown El Paso this Weekend

The Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD), in partnership with the El Paso Community Foundation, invites the community to the 12th annual Chalk the Block (CTB) Public Art Festival this weekend.

Chalk the Block 2019 runs from Friday, October 11, to Sunday, October 13, in downtown El Paso.

Every year, the family-friendly event brings more than 45,000 people to downtown El Paso to enjoy a sidewalk chalk art competition, temporary art installations, street performances, live music stage, local art and food vendors, free art activities at the El Paso Museums of Art and History, a kids zone and more.

In addition, the El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Museum of History will be open until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday during the festival with special events. Visitors can explore the museums and participate in family-friendly activities.

City officials added, “The festival creates a significant economic impact with a projected $1.2 million pumped into the local economy during the CTB weekend.”

Festival Schedule:

  • Friday, October 11, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. – Visitors can see Showcase Chalk Artists get a head start on their masterpieces and preview some of the large installations. Visit Food Truck Lane throughout the weekend to sample treats from various food trucks.
  • Saturday, October 12, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. – Events and activities include the GECU Kids Zone, live music and activities. Please note, the Downtown Art and Farmer’s Market will be closed during Chalk the Block, but some of the market vendors will be at Chalk the Block.
  • Sunday, October 13, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – GECU Kids Zone, music and art activities.

CTB 12 is sponsored by GECU, Chase Bank, Sound Stage 9, The Hunt Family Foundation, the El Paso Community Foundation, City of El Paso Museum and Cultural Affairs Department, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Chalk the Block Returns to Downtown El Paso Friday

The 11th annual Chalk the Block (CTB) Public Art Festival returns to Downtown El Paos, starting Friday, October 12 and running through Sunday, October 14.

Each year, the free family-friendly event brings more than 40,000 people to downtown El Paso to enjoy a sidewalk chalk art competition, temporary art pieces, street performances, live music stage, local art and food vendors, free art activities at the El Paso Museums of Art and History, a kids zone and more.

Festival Schedule:

  • Friday, October 12, from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., visitors can see Chalk the Block artists get a head start on their masterpieces and preview of some of the large art pieces. This year there will be two Food Truck Gardens open throughout the festival.
  • Saturday, October 13, from 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. Events include the GECU Kids Zone, live music and activities. The Downtown Art and Farmer’s Market will be closed during Chalk the Block, but you may visit some of the selected Market Vendors.
  • Sunday, October 14, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., the GECU Kids Zone, music and art activities.

Fort Bliss MWR will be providing a free shuttle service for military families on Saturday between Fort Bliss and the festival. The shuttle will run from the Replica Youth Center on Sheridan and drop off behind the El Paso Museum of Art starting at 11 a.m.

The last shuttle will leave downtown at 6 p.m.

The annual event is presented by the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD) in partnership with the El Paso Community Foundation.

Chalk the Block Announces Artist Line-Up, Headlining Band

On Sunday, the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD) rolled out the artist line-up and headlining band for Chalk the Block 2018.

“When we started, there were 12 artists and 5,000 people attending. We have steadily grown to include more than 200 artists, vendors and musicians and installations from around the world,” said Museums and Cultural Affairs Department Assistant Director Ben Fyffe.

“This year’s festival will bring new and exciting guest artists and continue the high quality entertainment we have come to expect from Chalk the Block.”

The art, music, and street vendor extravaganza takes place October 12 through 14 in downtown El Paso.

This year, the Tijuana Panthers will be the headlining band and will take the stage at 8 p.m. The trio from Long Beach, California, are known for dishing out a witty, lo-fi fusion on surf, garage rock and punk.

Festival visitors will be treated to live music throughout the day on Saturday from some of the area’s best local musicians. DJs will also be spinning throughout the weekend. In addition, the El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Museum of History will be open extended hours during Chalk the Block and visitors can take part in special programs or enjoy live music in the galleries.

2 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribes

3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Villains Kiss

5 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Flamel

6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – A. Billi Free

Chalk the Block is a great time for artists to showcase their chalk masterpieces and will engage attendees with installations created by artists from around the nation.
