Local Filmmaker’s Newest Film explores 1984 San Diego McDonalds Massacre

A local filmmaker, whose previous work examined the capture of ‘El Chapo’ and the infamous Las Cruces Bowling Alley massacre, turns his camera on one of the nation’s worst mass shootings: The San Ysidro Massacre.

In 1984, a murderer shot 40 people, killing 21, inside a McDonalds in San Diego. At the time, it was the largest mass shooting in the history of the USA; today, it ranks fifth.

The film’s director, Charlie Minn, reexamines the stories of the victims, first responders, reporters and the community.

“This tragedy was a ‘hate’ crime against Mexican people,” Minn says. “The anti-Mexican sentiment is so strong today because of Donald Trump…the Mexican people need to respond to this newly released crime scene video.”

Minn adds that the purpose of the film is to change the public’s perception of the event.

“At the end, I hope people will be impacted enough to inform, educate and raise awareness to others so that the number of innocent people being murdered will be diminished,” Minn states on the film’s website.

“77 Minutes” will open on 11/11 at Premiere Cinemas in El Paso and run for at least a week. El Paso will be only one of three cities to show the film before it goes on Amazon.
