Bees Best Chihuahuas in Homer-Fest 7-5; Dogs Drop Two Straight

There was definitely something in the air Friday at Southwest University Park, unfortunately it blew toward the visiting Salt Lake Bees. The Dogs lost 7-5 on a night when the air carried a combined six home runs out of the park.

Chihuahuas starter Walker Lockett (4.50 ERA) kept El Paso in the game going six innings and allowing two home runs but striking out six.

“I think Lockett threw the ball pretty well there were only a couple home runs that barely went out,” El Paso Manager Rod Barajas said. “Offensively we battled and were able to come back a couple times. It was only a couple bad pitches there at the end that really hurt us.”

The bad pitches came in the 8th inning when relief pitcher Jonathan Aro gave up a long ball to Salt Lake’s first baseman, Chris Carter tying the game.

Ex-Chihuahua, and current Dog nemesis, Jabari Blash followed with a double and later scored on a two-run single by second baseman Ryan Schimpf.

The winning pitcher was Dylan Unsworth (2-0) with the loss going to Jonathan Aro (2-2).

Chihuahuas Notes:

Right fielder Franmil Reyes extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a long ball to right center field.

The Padres announced some roster moves today and optioned Cory Spangenberg to El Paso.

“He’s an exciting player, he can bring a lot of energy,” Barajas said. “He can run, he can hit and he can hit it out of the park. Last year when he was here he showed us a glimpse of his capabilities and we’re really excited to have as a team.”
