PCL packs a punch thanks to EP’s France, Urias; takes win over Int’l League 9-3

It wasn’t the highest scoring game ever played at Southwest University Ballpark but it was anything but feeble in star power.

Each team brought their league’s most popular players and fortunately for the Pacific Coast League, their team packed a little more oomph in their 9-3 win over the International League’s All-Stars.

The win extended the PCL All-Stars’ winning streak to three over the Internationals.

The game featured three El Paso Chihuahuas: infielder Ty France (1-for-4 with a home run); infielder Luis Urias (1-for-3 with a home run); and catcher Austin Allen (1-for-2).

Chihuahuas slugger France earned the 2019 All-Star Most Valuable Player award.

The PCL All-Stars started the show in the 2nd inning with after four consecutive RBI hits that scored a total of four runs – the kicker was that all four of those were made on two outs.

The PCL was feasting on the Internationals’ pitching and sprinkled another four runs on the board by the 5th inning: including a home run by France in the 3rd inning that landed on the outer edge of the playground in center field and one-hopped onto Santa Fe Street.

Urias, probably inspired by his teammate, smacked a high-flying two-run bomb in the 5th.

The Internationals scored their first run in the 5th inning and haphazardly added a couple more until scoring their last and third run in the 8th inning. By that time, the PCL had a comfortable 9-3 lead and had earned a three-year streak and bragging rights until next year.

The winning pitcher was Jake Woodford – a starter for the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals affiliate. The losing pitcher was Keegan Akin, a starter for the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate for the Baltimore Orioles.

There were 9,706 fans at the stadium for the Ronald McDonald House Charities’ 2019 Triple-A All-Star Game.  |   Full Box Score
