El Paso to Receive $5.7M from HUD for Coronavirus Response and Recovery

The City of El Paso is set to receive approximately $5.7 million in federal grants to assist with response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“These federal dollars will go a long way toward ensuring the health and safety of the most vulnerable El Pasoans as we respond to this crisis and throughout our recovery,” said Mayor Dee Margo.

This funding is to be provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the CARES Act.

El Paso is slated to receive approximately $3.7 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), over $1.9 million Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) and $91,258 Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids (HOPWA).

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) must be used to assist low-income families and vulnerable populations affected by the COVID-19 crisis through facility improvements and service provision through local social service agencies as well as special economic development assistance.

The Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) is intended to keep homeless citizens safe during the COVID-19 crisis by supporting emergency shelter facilities and operations, providing hotel/motel vouchers, preventing El Pasoans from becoming homeless, and providing essential services to people experiencing homelessness.

Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids (HOPWA) provides funds for service agencies to assist citizens with compromised immune systems through rental and utility assistance, access to medical and mental health services, nutritional services, and job training and placement.

“The Department of Community and Human Development stands ready to engage with community leaders to determine the most effective use of these funds in light of the ongoing crisis and extraordinary community need” said Nicole Ferrini, Director of Community and Human Development.
