Crockett Library Adds Book by Second-Grade Author to Collection

Move over Dr. Seuss, J.K. Rowlling and Beverly Cleary, there’s a new hot author in the Crockett Elementary School library: second-grader Nehemiah Martinez.

Nehemiah wrote and illustrated “Jack the Juice Box,” a book about a crime-fighting superhero who also happens to be a box of juice, in a matter of seven weeks.

The hand-written tome is now part of the permanent collection at Crockett. The book is made of stapled notebook paper and contains original art, including stickers.

“I was so excited to have my comic book on the shelves, but I was embarrassed,” said Martinez. “I wondered if anyone would even want to read it.”

A few days after its arrival, the comic book left the library in the hands of a student eager to read about Jack, the unlikely juice-box hero.

The writing process was long and filled with the traditional decision-making quandaries. Nehemiah, for example, struggled with the identity of his protagonist, who at different points was either a hamburger or a plate of spicy spaghetti.

Crockett librarian Lisa Eaton said she was delighted to find out there was an author among her students and encouraged Nehemiah to continue his dream of becoming a published writer.

“When he finally brought his book in, I put a barcode on the cover and we placed it between the other books we have,” Eaton said.

The young author’s dream grew when he realized he was capable of placing a book in a library.

“I want to take this chance to write more comic books,” Martinez said. “I’m going to go all over the world delivering my books.”

His sophomore effort is already in the works. Nehemiah is in development of a comic book featuring a character named Catman.
