Catching Up with Cross Country: Andress’ Wilkes, Americas Boys, Franklin Girls Win

Andress senior Chauncey Wilkes won his first varsity meet ever winning the Chapin Invitational at Skyline Park in 16:40.3

Americas junior Jacob Ye was second (16:43.18), third went to Socorro senior Mario Luna (16:52.22), Franklin senior Jacobo Wedemeyer was fourth (16:56.73) and Americas senior Tyler Rodriguez was fifth (16:58.11).

Ye and Rodriquez led the Americas boys to a meet championship. Americas won the team title with 32 points followed by Socorro (77), Chapin (97), Burges (99) and Franklin (101).

On the girl’s side, Franklin sophomore Eva Jess continues her two-year El Paso unbeaten streak alive, winning the race in 19:15.11. Chapin senior Skyler Goodman was second in 20:39.84 followed by Franklin senior Amalia Dorion (20:58.52) and a pair of Americas juniors – Daphne Duran (21:00.14) and Priscilla Villalobos (21:05.44).

Franklin’s top five finished in the top 12 to take the team title with 34 points followed by Americas (48), Socorro (66), Bel Air (108) and Hanks (114).

UTEP XCountry runner Rotich named to C-USA All-Academic Team

Irving, Texas- UTEP’s Anthony Rotich was voted to the Conference USA Cross Country All-Academic team on Friday morning. Rotich was awarded for his work ethic in the classroom and exceptional athletic ability.

This is the third time Rotich has been named to the C-USA All-Academic team. The senior holds a 3.21 GPA and is majoring in multidisciplinary studies. The four-time national champion is coming off his fourth straight individual title at the C-USA Championships; he completed his 8K in 24:44.1 to lead the men’s team to its first conference team title since 2009.

The UTEP men’s cross country team will be in action this afternoon at 1 p.m. MT in the NCAA Mountain Regionals looking to secure a berth in the NCAA Championships. Live results will be available at

A total of 12 athletes (six male and six female) were named to the 2015 C-USA Cross All-Academic teams. The all-academic teams are made up of athletes who are able to maintain a 3.2 GPA or higher, and play an influential role on their team’s success.
