Video: TNTM – Our Favorite New TV Shows

There are a ton of great TV series out now on broadcast TV, cable, and streaming services. The only problem is there isn’t enough time to watch them all.

Netflix and Disney are leading the way with their original shows on their streaming services. Disney is pushing out some Star Wars and DC Comics titles that are really looking good.

Netflix is still leading the way with their Marvel Comics related shows, even with the cancellation of Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

What TV shows are you watching that we didn’t mention. Let us know in the comments so we can add them to our DVR.

Video: Netflix Marvel Cinematic Universe

Netflix has done a bang-up job bringing the Marvel characters to prominence on their streaming service. They took some of the lower tier characters and made them household names.

It all started with Daredevil. Daredevil on Netflix was absolutely amazing. That series opened the door for all the follow-ons. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Punisher, and the big team up of Defenders.

Even the lowest rated of the Netflix Marvel series are better than a lot of the movies. Still haven’t watched all of Iron Fist season 2 yet, but it is on the list. I actually enjoyed Iron Fist season 1 so this season should be a marked improvement.

What do you think about the Netflix Marvel series? Let us know in the comments below.

Video+Story: Netflix Daredevil Season 3 Discussion

Daredevil season 1 on Netflix is the series that started the wildfire of Netflix Marvel superhero series. The popularity of Daredevil made it possible for Netflix to produce series for Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and the team-up series The Defenders.

Daredevil season 2 improved on what we saw in the first season. The fight choreography was phenomenal and the story gave us more depth into Matt’s past. The Hand and Elektra were introduced and clearly defined. We were also introduced to fan favorite character The Punisher.

Season 3 promises to be even more epic. Kingpin is back and the Hand is still around. Hopefully we will see some cameos from the other Netflix series characters. I’d like to see this be the push for a second season of The Defenders.

If you haven’t watched any of the Netflix Marvel series, you have time to catch up on all of them. Watch all the individual season 1’s before watching The Defenders so you have a back story for all the team members.

TNTM: The Defenders on Netflix

The Marvel method of introducing the audience to individual characters before launching them into a group movie has proven to be very successful. They are following the same plan for their Netflix series, The Defenders.

We have seen seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. We have had two seasons of Daredevil. The even used the second season of Daredevil to launch their Punisher series. That is for another podcast though. They will be throwing these characters together (minus Punisher) to form the street level heroes team of the Defenders.

The Defenders will be pitted against the Hand, who played an integral part in the individual series. Any good Marvel fan knows when the Hand is involved you are likely to see Stick and Elektra as well. They are both in the Defenders series.

Continuing the tradition on being in every Netflix Marvel series to date, Rosario Dawson will be reprising her role as Claire Temple (Night Nurse).

We will see Sigourney Weaver in the Defenders as Alexandra. Not much is known about this character except she holds weight within the Hand organization.

I am hoping they can capture the same Marvel team dynamic from the movies to the TV screen. I can’t wait to see the buddy banter between Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Hopefully they will pull Misty Knight away from the police force and onto the team in season one. Her and Colleen Wing play off each other very well. Jessica Jones should keep the whole team grounded and focused on their task.

Gotta admit… I’m getting a little hyped.

TNTM: Marvel’s Iron Fist Netflix Original Series

Netflix has been killing it with their Marvel Comics super hero series. Their use of the oft-forgotten street level heroes has been a huge hit for them.

It all started with Daredevil taking on the Kingpin in Daredevil season one. Next we were introduced to Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in the Jessica Jones series.

The Luke Cage series gave us the back story on Luke as well as introducing Misty Knight and teasing Colleen Wing. Daredevil season 2 put the Punisher front and center. The Punisher was so well received they greenlit a series focused on him. Now we are getting to see Danny Rand/Iron Fist in his own series. All of this is leading up to the Defenders series where they all work together to stop crime in New York.

Finn Jones will star as Danny Rand/Iron Fist on the Netflix series scheduled for release on March 17, 2017. The plot has Danny returning to New York City after being presumed dead for 15 years. He has come back to reclaim his family’s company. When a threat emerges Danny must choose between his family’s legacy and his duties as the Iron Fist.

Who is Iron Fist?

Danny’s father, Wendell had found the mystical city of K’un-L’un as a young boy. During his time in K’un L’un, Wendell saved the life of the city’s ruler, Lord Tuan and was adopted by him. Wendell eventually left K’un L’un and became a wealthy entrepreneur in the United States.

Wendell later organized an expedition to rediscover K’un L’un. He took his wife, his business partner, and his nine-year-old son (Daniel). On the climb up the mountain, Daniel slips off the path. His tie-rope pulls his mother and father with him.

Wendell ends up falling to his death. Daniel and his mother come across a makeshift bridge that appears out of nowhere. They are then attacked by a pack of wolves. Daniel’s mother throws herself on the wolves to save him. The K’un L’un archers try unsuccessfully to save her. The archers take Daniel to see Yü-Ti, the hooded ruler of K’un L’un. Yü-Ti apprentices him to Lei Kung, the Thunderer, who teaches him the martial arts.

Daniel proves to be the most gifted of Lei Kung’s students. At 19 Daniel is given the chance to attain the power of the Iron Fist by fighting and defeating the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying. Shou-Lao guards the molten heart that had been torn from his body. Daniel figured out the heart provides life energy to Shou-Lao through the dragon-shaped scar on its chest. He covers the scar with his own body and hangs on until Shou-Lao collapses and dies. The process burned a dragon tattoo into his own chest. Daniel enters the dragon’s cave and plunges his fists into a brazier containing the creature’s molten heart. This grants him the power of the Iron Fist.

When K’un L’un reappears on Earth after 10 years, Daniel leaves to return to New York. It is during this time he teams up with Luke Cage to form Heroes for Hire. They will be uniting with Misty Knight, Jessica Jones, Daredevil to form a new group called the Defenders. Luke Cage is the only character that was consistently a member of the older Defenders comic book series. Marvel plans to launch a new Defenders comic book using these characters in 2017.

Iron Fists Powers and Abilities

Danny Rand has been infused with the dragon’s (Shou-Lao) superhuman energy. He has received extensive martial arts training from Lei Kung the Thunderer. Danny is able to concentrate his chi and the superhuman energy from Shou-Lao’s heart into his hand. He can use this “iron fist” to strike with superhuman hardness and impact. Summoning the power required to use this ability leaves Danny physically/mentally drained and unable to repeat the act for a time.

He is also able to focus his chi inward to heal himself or outward to heal others of injury. He can give himself psychic senses and telepathically fuse his consciousness with another person.

TNTM: Marvel Comics announces Bullseye mini-series

If the Netflix Daredevil series has done anything, it has made Matt Murdock a major player in the Marvel Universe again.

Daredevil has paved the way for other characters like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Punisher, and Iron Fist.

With these characters we also get their villains.  One of the big Daredevil villains will be getting his own Marvel Comics title starting in February 2017.  Bullseye has been one of Daredevil’s arch-nemesis for a long time.

Bullseye is a psychopathic assassin. He uses the opportunities afforded by his line of work to exercise his homicidal tendencies and to work out his own personal vendetta against Daredevil.

Although he possesses no superpowers, He is able to use almost any object as a lethal projectile.  Whether it is weapons like shuriken and sai or seemingly harmless objects like playing cards and pencils. His marksmanship is at a nearly supernatural level.  He has been known to miss moving targets.

Bullseye’s real name and origins are unknown. He has used the name “Benjamin Poindexter” on several occasions.  There are also instances where his name is given as “Lester”. Bullseye grew up in The Bronx. He lived with his brother and his abusive father. His brother’s main form of recreation was playing with rifles.  This lead Bullseye to become an expert shot.

Bullseye was placed in a foster home and became a baseball player in high school. He was an extremely talented pitcher and was offered a scholarship but opted to enter the minor leagues. After three games he was called up to play a sold-out Major League game. He was working on a no-hitter going into the bottom of the ninth with two outs.  He became bored and requested the coach pull him from the game. The coach insisted that he finish the game. The opposing team’s batter accused him of cowardice. Bullseye threw the ball at his head, killing him. As the ball made contact with the batter’s head, he said only one word: “Bullseye”. He was barred from professional baseball and convicted of manslaughter.

His cold demeanor and unique skills lead him to be recruited by the National Security Agency as an assassin. He was assigned to train Contras in Nicaragua.  Bullseye set up Paolo, his hapless Nicaraguan translator, as the leader of the new force controlling a smuggler’s airfield. Bullseye planned to invite several organized crime heads to the airfield to broker a new deal with him as Paolo’s supposed “right hand man”. He would take their money and disappear leaving Paolo to suffer the wrath of the Mafia, Russian Mafia, Yakuza, and various other criminal elements. Before the deal could be finalized the Punisher (Frank Castle) arrived.

Castle killed all the organized crime leaders in a fiery explosion from which Bullseye barely escaped. The two engaged in a fierce battle in which Bullseye was able to wound Punisher and evade / disable several of his weapons. Bullseye then used some blood-reddened mud to paint a bull’s-eye on his forehead mocking Castle’s inability to hit him. The fight concluded when Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrived and the Punisher fled. Bullseye turned himself in to the D.E.A. agents and was assigned to infiltrate the Kingpin’s criminal empire. He obtained a costume, fled yet again, and became one of the most dangerous hit-men in the world.

Bullseye mini-series

Debuting in February 2017, “Bullseye” will be written by Ed Brisson and feature art by Guillermo Sanna. The title will focus on the unrepentant killer attempting to maintain the balance between psychotic murderer and a cool and collected assassin while doing what he does best – killing anyone who happens to cross his path.

“[The series] won’t change the Bullseye we see,” Brisson explained. “He’s always going to be that same crazy dude who’s out to kill and isn’t going to be bothered about who’s in his way. We’re going to see a man who walks that balance between the two sides well. There is always going to be a very specific method to his madness.”

Though the title begins with Bullseye out of the country “on a suicide mission,” as always, all roads in his life lead to Hell’s Kitchen and Matt Murdock. To that end, Brisson assures that he’s been working with “Daredevil” writer Charles Soule to ensure their plans meld together smoothly, though the series’ initial plans call for some minor DD characters to play a role rather than the Man Without Fear himself.

Daredevil’s foes often view crime as a business, with murder viewed merely as a means to an end, with nothing personal about it. There is one Daredevil foe, however, who’s found a way to make his love for murder pay. Of course it helps that The Man Without Fear’s arch-enemy, the contract killer Bullseye, has the near-magical ability to weaponize almost anything.

Netflix Daredevil with Punisher & Elektra

Daredevil on Netflix to have Punisher and Elektra

Jack and Troy from ZiaComics.com geek out about the new season of Daredevil on Netflix.

This is the first in a planned series of shows detailing the Marvel universe. “Daredevil” follows Matt Murdock.  He is an attorney by day and vigilante by night.

Matt was blinded in an accident as a child. He uses his heightened senses as Daredevil to fight crime on the streets of New York after the sun goes down.

His efforts are not welcomed by powerful businessman Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. Murdock’s day job portrays a man who believes in the criminal justice system. His alter ego suggests otherwise. He takes the law into his own hands to protect his Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood and the surrounding communities.

The origin story relates that while living in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from an oncoming vehicle while pushing a man to safety from the oncoming truck. While he can no longer see, the radioactive exposure heightens his remaining senses beyond normal human ability and gives him a “radar sense”.

His father, a boxer named Jack Murdock, supports him as he grows up. Jack is later killed by gangsters after refusing to throw a fight. After donning a yellow and dark red costume (later all dark red), Matt seeks out revenge against his father’s killers as the superhero Daredevil. He fights against his many enemies including Bullseye and Kingpin. He also becomes a lawyer. Daredevil’s nickname is “the Man Without Fear”.

Daredevil has been home to the work of comic-book artists such as Everett, Kirby, Wally Wood, John Romita Sr., and Gene Colan, among others. Frank Miller had an influential tenure on the title in the early 1980s and cemented the character as a popular and influential part of the Marvel Universe. Daredevil has since appeared in various forms of media including several animated series, video games and merchandise, and a feature-length film where he was portrayed by Ben Affleck. Charlie Cox plays the title character in Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix that premiered on April 10, 2015.
