Daughters of the American Revolution honor Adair Margo

Earlier this month, the Stoddert-del Norte Chapter (NSDAR), held its annual Patriot Tea at the El Paso Women’s Club where El Paso’s First Lady Adair Margo was honored.

In attendance for this special occasion were members from the Stoddert-del Norte Chapter, ladies from the El Paso Women’s Club, and members from the Simeon Hart Chapter of Daughters of the Confederacy.

The Stoddert-del Norte Chapter presented Margo with a DAR plaque honoring her for her years of work preserving the art and legacy of Tom Lea.

Adair Margo is the founder of the Tom Lea Institute, a non-profit organization whose mission is to share the art and literature
produced by Tom Lea through education. Tom Lea was an American muralist, illustrator, artist, war correspondent, novelist, and historian who was born, lived and died in El Paso.

The bulk of his art and literary works were about Texas, north-central Mexico, and his World War II experience.

The chapter also honored its members’ American Patriots with a beautiful display of the original 13 colonies and the name of each chapter members’ Patriot.

El Paso Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution help celebrate national milestone

Last month, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) welcomed its 1 millionth member since its founding in 1890, and members of the El Paso Chapter helped celebrate.

DAR’s members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.  DAR is a non-profit that is non-political, non-religious and is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.

DAR members are committed to volunteer service, having served more than 12.5 million hours in communities throughout the world in just the last three years.

El Paso’s Stoddert-del Norte Chapter, NSDAR celebrated this millionth member milestone by having a Tree Planting Ceremony at Keystone Heritage Park. This event, headed by members Brittany Smith and Judi Pierce, took place on November 23, 2019.

Keystone Heritage Park is an archeological site, archaic wetlands, and a botanical garden, where a notable work of art is the Susan Shelby Magoffin bronze statue, part of the XII Travelers Memorial.

The Chapter will have a public event to unveil and dedicate the tree in the spring.

“The chapter would like to thank Bernie Sargent, President Keystone Heritage Park, who made this exceptionally lovely location possible…[and] Sierra Vista Wholesale Growers for donating the beautiful Texas Laurel Tree,” chapter officials shared via a news release.

El Paso’s Stoddert-del Norte Chapter, NSDAR is comprised of two merged chapters, dating back to 1902. Members are of all backgrounds and ages, but they all share a passion for historic preservation, education, and patriotism and a dedication to their local community.

The chapter focuses its efforts on providing goods for local Veterans, awarding school essay awards, awarding medals to local ROTC students, and next year will focus on preserving historical sites.
