Video: DC Comics Shazam! Upcoming movie

Shazam has a very interesting history. The character has changed hands a few times and has been the target of more than one lawsuit. Shazam was one of the most popular characters in comics in his early years.

There were several comic titles, TV shows, and animated features. The Shazam movie is scheduled for 2019 release as part of the DC Extended Universe. The movie will star Zachary Levi and Asher Angel portraying the title role.

Shazam, also known as Captain Marvel is a character published by DC Comics. Artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker created the character in 1939. Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 published by Fawcett Comics. Shazam is the alter ego of Billy Batson.

When Billy speaks the magic word “SHAZAM” (acronym of six “immortal elders”: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), can transform himself into a costumed adult with the powers of superhuman strength, speed, flight, and other abilities.

Fawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel comics in 1953, partly because of a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics. The lawsuit alleged Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman.

In 1972, DC licensed the Marvel Family characters from Fawcett. DC attempted to integrate Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family into their DC Universe with mixed success due to trademark conflicts over another character named “Captain Marvel” owned by Marvel Comics.

DC Comics published and branded the character’s adventures using the title Shazam!. This led many to assume that “Shazam” was the character’s name. DC Comics officially renamed the character “Shazam” when relaunching its comic book properties in 2011.

DC Comics is hoping to return Shazam to his former prominence with the 2019 movie release. We have our fingers crossed the film makes Billy Batson/Shazam a new fan favorite.

TNTM: Dark Nights Metal Batman the Devastator

Dark Nights Metal is telling the story of the Nightmare Batmen from the Dark Universe coming over to the main DC Comics Universe. They are being led by Batman Who Laughs. They are working towards using Batman as the conduit to bring the demon Barbatos through. Batman the Devastator is the Batman from the Dark Universe if he incorporated the Doomsday DNA into his own.

Batman Devastator is particularly intimidating as you have the strength and power of Doomsday coupled with the ingenuity and intelligence of Bruce Wayne. Devastator is an unstoppable force. Even the best the Justice League throws at him, he overcomes.

It is gonna be interesting to see how the Nightmare Batmen are dealt with. Scott Snyder has promised there are some universe altering events stemming out of this story-line. I’ve been a big fan of Snyder’s work in the past so I am really excited to see what he has in store for us.

TNTM: Bill Finger DC Comics secret legend

ZIA COMICS FUN FACT – BILL FINGER

Bill Finger was never recognized for all his contributions to the comics world while he was alive. That is truly a shame since he gave us so many iconic and memorable characters. It was not until 2014 that Bill Finger was formally acknowledged as the co-creator of Batman. Finger’s name appeared in the 75th anniversary reissue of the first DC Comics edition with Batman in it.

Finger first began collaborating with DC comics and Bob Kane in 1938 on comic strips. Then National Comics (which would later become DC Comics) introduced Superman in Action Comics #1 and it was a huge hit. Comic book artists/writers/publishers were all trying to duplicate the man of steel’s success.

Bob Kane is often credited as the sole creator of Batman. Bob Kane went on public record numerous times with this claim. After Bill Finger’s death Bob Kane recanted and admitted Bill Finger played a big part in developing Batman. Bob Kane said “Bill Finger was a contributing force on Batman right from the beginning… I made Batman a superhero-vigilante when I first created him. Bill turned him into a scientific detective.”

Unfortunately Bill Finger was never properly honored for his contributions to the comic business while he was alive. You hardly see his name anywhere thanks to Bob Kane, who managed to finagle a lot of legalities about Batman to his own advantage.

Bill Finger contributed much of the early Batman mythology as well as greatly influencing the costume design. Bill Finger even came up with the name Bruce Wayne ( a hybrid of Robert I of Scotland who was called Robert Bruce or Robert the Bruce, and U.S. Revolutionary War General “Mad” Anthony Wayne). Finger wrote both the initial script for Batman’s debut in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939) and the character’s second appearance.

Finger is also often credited with being the man behind Robin’s origin story. Finger developed what would become the Batcave, Batmobile, Batplane, Batarang, utility belt, and the name Gotham City.

The list of Bill Finger creations is a long one. He co-created Alan Scott (the original Green Lantern), Harvey Dent, Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin), Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, The Riddler, and Hugo Strange.

He has over 150 issues of Batman attributed to him. Counting all DC Comics titles he wrote well over 600 issues! He even worked on Sensation Comics #1, which featured the origin story of Wonder Woman!

TNTM: Batman Dark Nights Metal #1 review

In Batman: Dark Nights Metal #1 a lot of the mystery surround Nth metal is being explained.

We get to see a little bit of Mongol in the beginning, but he doesn’t have a significant part in the story (yet). We get introduced to Kendra Saunders and the Blackhawks. They have been trying to prevent the Dark Multiverse from emerging behind the scenes.

Bruce Wayne comes into possession of Carter Hall’s (Hawkman) journal. In the journal he reads that Carter has been investigating the Nth Metal and he mentions the tribes and a god named Barbatos.

As Bruce is contemplating the meaning behind the journal and the recent unexplained events, The Dream of the Endless appears to him. Dream tells him the nightmare has only begun. This probably alludes to the coming of the Dark Multiverse and the NIghtmare Batmen. What makes this especially interesting is this version of Dream is Daniel Hall. His grandfather is none other than Carter Hall. That’s right, the guy that spent his many lifetimes investigating the Nth metal and left his journal for Bruce to find.

So far the Dark Nights Metal series is off to a good start. It is hard to imagine how they are gonna tie all of this in with the Nightmare Batmen one-shots and the Superman/Dr. Manhattan story-line. I have faith in Dan Jurgens, Scott Snyder, and Geoff Johns. I am expecting a huge resolution that will shake the very pillars of the DC Universe.

TNTM: DC Comics Mister Miracle #1 review

Mister Miracle has always been a very interesting, but lesser known characters in the DC Universe. He has always been one of those characters that seemed to do better on a team rather than in his own title.

Tom King is a good enough writer to finally catapult Miracle Man into the limelight. Mister Miracle was created by Jack Kirby as part of his Fourth World epic saga.

Mister Miracle (Scott Free) is the one of the New Gods. He is the son of Highfather, ruler of New Genesis. To bring about peace between New Genesis and Apokolips, Highfather exchanged his son (Scott Free) for Darkseid’s son (Orion) as part of a truce agreement.

Scott was raised on Apokolips in the orphanage of Granny Goodness. The orphanage was where he was subjected to countless horrors and torture in an effort to destroy the goodness inside him. Scott trained his mind to distance himself from his pain. He also developed his reason, logic and problem-solving abilities.

He met and fell in love with another New God, Big Barda. While Barda loves to fight and relishes battle, Scott is more peaceful and simply wants to fit in. They escaped Apokolips together and traveled to Earth. He took on the identity of Mister Miracle from a professional escape artist named Thaddeus Brown. Brown was killed by Intergang and Free inherited his legacy and his assistant Oberon.

Like all New Gods, Mister Miracle possesses beyond superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes, stamina, and more. Along with his natural gifts he carries a number of weapons and advanced Apokoliptian technology. He has a Mother Box that can transfer energy, sense danger and life, create force fields, project shock-waves, and open boom tubes for travel. He also utilizes personally modified Aero Disks that allow him to fly at speeds of over 200 mph and cling to walls and ceilings.

Mister Miracle has incredible intelligence and is extremely resourceful. He is known as the world’s greatest escape artist, with the ability to escape from literally anything.

TNTM: DC Comics Action Comics #987 and #988

DC Comics has been introducing lots of questions in their Rebirth initiative. Ever since Rebirth kicked off in May 2016 there have been hints of the Watchmen being pulled into the DC Comics Universe. We are just starting to see answers to our questions. Some of these answers have been in front of our face for some time.

Action Comics #987 and #988 is being solicited as telling us exactly who is the person behind the mysterious Mr. Oz. Both of these issues will have lenticular covers. If you are unfamiliar with what a lenticular cover is, it will show one picture when viewed at a particular angle and another picture when tilted at the opposite angle.

The solicited lenticular cover shows Superman’s biological father, Jor-El, on Krypton as it is about to explode. When you tilt it you notice a blue light engulfing Jor-El and saving him from destruction. This is causing lots of readers to speculate Mr. Oz is actually Jor-El. This would explain his infatuation and near obsession with Clark Kent’s life in Rebirth.

Do you believe Mr. Oz is actually Jor-El? If not, who do you think Mr. Oz actually is? Let us know in the comments.

TNTM: Batman Dark Nights Metal

DC Comics has done a lot to right the ship. They took a beating over their New 52 initiative. Things looked a little better with Forever Evil, but they took a big nasty turn with their Convergence story-line.

A lot of readers were skeptical when DC Comics announced their Rebirth line wide event. They hadn’t exactly been crushing it with their events. Rebirth has been exactly what DC Comics needed. They have mixed the right amount of teasing with a good amount of revealing. It has been enough to keep most people interested in the event. The continuity between titles has been pretty tight as well. That is something that had been lacking in the past from both of the Big 2.

With all of the hype of the possible Watchmen tie-ins to the DC Universe, they started an even more ambitious event within the Rebirth timeline. DC Comics is teaming Gcott Snyder and Greg Capullo back up to give us Dark Nights Metal.

Scott Snyder has said “I’ve been planning METAL for as long as I’ve been writing Batman, but I want METAL to be built upon the stories happening now in Rebirth. Most of all we want to create new material that feels really modern and different. And above all, it’s going to be fun. Even with terror and nightmares, it won’t be grim. DARK NIGHTS: METAL will be celebratory, huge and crazy.”

Dark Days the Forge and Casting were lead-in titles to the Dark Nights Metal series. They set up the story with Batman researching Nth metal and the Dark Multiverse. Dark Nights Metal will delve into the Nightmare Batmen. Each of them is one of Batman’s worst nightmares about himself made flesh. Every one represents a time in his career that he could have gone wrong or too far and become villainous himself.

Every Nightmare Batman is inspired by members of the Justice League. What if Bruce Wayne took a wrong turn as a kid and decided to try to bring his parents back to life by any means? What if after Superman died, he had gone too far experimenting with Doomsday’s DNA to prevent such a tragedy from happening again? What if he declared war on Ares? Or tried to harness the Speed Force?

Snyder explains The Nightmare Batmen are lead by the Batman Who Laughs. This is the only one not already revealed. It is very apparent he is Batman’s worst nightmare inspired by his rivalry with his greatest foe, the Joker.

There will be seven one-shot comics explaining origins of the Nightmare Batmen. The plan is to bring out a new series of books under the Dark Matter Universe. A few of those titles are The Terrifics, Immortal Men, and New Challengers.

Are you looking forward to seeing the Nightmare Batmen? Do you think the new Dark Matter Universe will be a hit? Let us know in the comments.

TNTM: DC Comics Black Lightning on the CW

The CW network has been killing it with their DC Comics superhero related series. The Arrow paved the way for the Flash. Then they snatched up the rights to Supergirl from CBS to give them a solid trifecta of superhero shows. Now they are working on one of DC Comics lesser known and greatly under utilized characters, Black Lightning.

Jefferson Pierce grew up in the Southside section of Metropolis. This area was referred to as Suicide Slum because it was widely believed the only way to escape the degradation of the slum was to kill yourself. He pushed himself in athletics and academia. Jefferson was good enough to win a gold medal in the Olympic decathlon.

He returned to his old neighborhood with his wife Lynn Stewart and his daughter Anissa to become the principal of Garfield High School. The neighborhood came under control of a ruthless gang. Jefferson feared for the safety of his family and neighbors so he stopped repressing his mutant abilities and began fighting as Black Lightning.

He was originally depicted as having no mutant powers. He used a belt that allowed him to generate a force field and project electrical bolts. We later find out these powers exist due to Metagene and that he does in fact have control over lightning due to this mutation.

Black Lightning is able to shoot extremely powerful lightning bolts, ionize the atmosphere, create localized lightning storms, and create quick charges of electricity in his fists to give his punches more of a shock.

In addition to all these powers, Black Lightning can also transform himself into electricity. In his electrical form, Black Lightning is nearly invulnerable. He can’t be hit with physical objects, can’t be poisoned or infected with any diseases, and he doesn’t need air, food, or water to survive.

While in electrical form he is able to survive in space, travel the same way regular electricity, pass through walls or solid objects, and move extremely fast. He is able to create magnetic fields allowing him to move and control objects.

Black Lightning is more than just his name. He is capable of throwing black lightning. It is a mystical type of lightning that is literally colored black. It is fueled by his rage and he grows stronger as he gets angrier.

His powers allow him to absorb energy in order to make himself stronger. He can make himself stronger, faster, heal quicker, and produce more lightning. Any source of electricity will serve his purposes.

Black Lightning earned the respect of many DC Comics superheroes. Green Arrow in particular became a good friend and nominated him for membership in the Justice League. Black Lightning declined that invitation, but he did later become a valuable member of Batman and the Outsiders. He even filled the position of Secretary of Education under President Lex Luthor.

What are your thoughts about the CW developing a new DC Comics superhero series centered on Black Lightning? Do you want to see him cross-over into the other CW series? Is there a Black Lightning story-line you’d like to see covered in the series? Let us know in the comments below.

TNTM: DC Comics Action Comics #982 review

The Superman character under the DC Comics Rebirth initiative has been surprisingly good. Just recently the New 52 Superman and the pre-Flashpoint Superman & Lois Lane were merged. This merge was done by the pre-Flashpoint Jonathan Kent (Superman & Lois’s son). Now they are teasing that Superman has something to do with the Doomsday Clock one-shot coming up in November. Lots of things affecting the DC Comics Universe seem to hinge on this character.

**Warning- spoilers may follow**

Between now and November there is a lot of things happening to Superman. In Action Comics #982 we see Superman’s rogues gallery banding together to defeat the Kryptonian. General Zod leads this group of Superman foes (Eradicator, Blanque, Cyborg Superman, Metallo, Mongul) to the front door of the fortress of solitude.

Superman tunnels underground and up into the middle of his group of adversaries in order to give Lois and Jonathan time to escape. Superman has been weakened from his recent time in the Black Vault. The villains are in the midst of an epic beat down of Superman when a group of Superman’s friends show up to save him.

The group of Superman’s friends is made up of his cousin Supergirl, Steel, Superwoman, and Kenan Kong the New Super-man. The most surprising member of this group is Lex Luthor. It seems Lex has done a complete turn around from villain to hero.

Action Comics #983 should be true to it’s name and be chock full of superhero fighting action. Seeing these 2 obscenely overpowered groups going toe to toe should be crazy.

TNTM: Batman Proposes to Catwoman

In Batman #24, Batman proposes to Catwoman on the last page. After meeting his father, Thomas Wayne, in the mini-series “The Button” he starts having second thoughts about being Batman. His father even told him to not be Batman. He wants his son to enjoy his life.

This is not the first time Batman has tied the knot (or come close) in the comics. On Earth 2 he actually did marry Selina Kyle and their daughter became the Huntress.

He nearly married Lois Lane. Lois believed Bruce Wayne was actually Superman. That had to make for awkward meetings of the Justice League.

He had a close call with Vicki Vale as well. She was kinda politically trapped into marrying a visiting Shah in order to keep the peace. Vicki said she was engaged to Batman already. When Batman told him Vicki would have to undergo reconstructive surgery to hide her identity since Batman’s enemies would come after her, the Shah relented. He didn’t want anything to change her beauty.

There was an issue where Batman married Batwoman, but that ended up being a dream Robin had. There is another issue where Alfred writes a story where Batman marries Batwoman. They retire and Dick Grayson becomes the new Batman and their son becomes the new Robin. I’m actually surprised they didn’t use this story in an alternate universe issue.

There was a story where Eros gave a love potion to both Wonder Woman And Batman. They were all set to get married until they used the lasso of truth to break the spell.

The one marriage that is legally binding is to Talia Al’Ghul. Ras had Batman in a country where the only requirement for marriage was for the father and bride to agree. Therefore, Bruce Wayne is legally betrothed to Talia.

One interesting thing that may come from Batman marrying Catwoman is how will Damion Wayne react. Catwoman would than be his step-mom. Damion is surly and rebellious enough as it is. Adding this new wrinkle may push him over the edge.

TNTM: DC Comics Doomsday Clock to answer questions

DC Comics Doomsday Clock on shelves November 2017

Ever since Geoff Johns started DC Comics on their path to the Rebirth event, a lot of questions have been presented with very few answers.  Johns promises answers in Doomsday Clock.

First we had Wally West returning from the Speed Force with the knowledge that Barry Allen (Flash) was not responsible for the Flashpoint changes. Wally claims to have seen something that didn’t belong in the Speed Force. What did he see?

You have also seen Johnny Thunder and Saturn Girl from the JSA. Jay Garrick’s helmet is seen in a few panels too. In fact Johnny is seen rambling about how it is his fault the JSA is gone, but he can bring them back. How does the JSA factor into everything?

Ray Palmer (Atom) sends a message to Ryan Choi, his assistant, saying he needs to be rescued. He also told him he discovered a disruption deep within the temporal nanostructure of the time line. Ray claims there is evidence of something much bigger than a few historical robberies within the very essence of time. Has Ray discovered who or what is responsible for the 5 years taken out of the New 52 timeline?

Mr. Mxyzptlk shows up and explains Superman had been split into the New 52 Superman/Lois Lane and the post-crisis Superman/Lois Lane. Somehow Jonathan Kent is able to merge them back into one entity. How did Jonathan get this power? Why was Superman split into 2 entities in New 52?

The mysterious Mr. Oz has a few characters imprisoned. He had Mr. Mxyzptlk, but he manged to escape. He still has Tim Drake, Doomsday, and Prophecy that we know about. There are some prisoners that have not been shown. Is Mr. Oz Ozymandias from the Watchment? Why is he toying with the DCU timeline? What do these prisoners have to do with his plans?

In the four part “The Button” storyline we saw the Comedian’s smiley face button get activated when it came into contact with Psycho Pirate’s mask. Psycho Pirate was able to remember the original continuity of the timeline. How does he factor into story?

These are just a few of the questions that still linger in Rebirth. DC Comics has been promoting the “Doomsday Clock” by Geoff Johns. Johns has been orchestrating the whole Rebirth story, but this is the first thing he has written since the initial Rebirth one shot to kick off the whole event.

Geoff Johns has promised this won’t be a Watchmen sequel. The imagery of the Watchmen countdown clock with the Superman shield at the midnight hour lets you know there is gonna be a big clash between the two. Johns has said Doctor Manhattan and Superman will weigh heavily into his story.

So far the whole DC Comics Rebirth event has been a great read. A lot of questions still need to be answered. Here’s to hoping we get those answers in November when “Doomsday Clock” hits the shelves.

TNTM: DC Comics Wonder Woman movie review

DC Comics has been getting a lot of criticism lately about their major motion pictures.  People were saying Marvel had the secret formula for successful superhero movies and DC just couldn’t quite get it completely right.  The Wonder Woman movie will put all that chatter to rest.

The Wonder Woman (Diana Prince) movie gives us her origin story.  This works because her origin hasn’t been played out ad nauseam in previous movies.

We get to see where Diana gets her combat training, god-like powers, and her god-forged weapons.  We see the innocence and purity of the character as well.  Gal Gadot really knocked it out of the park portraying Wonder Woman.

The pacing for movie was so good it didn’t seem like over 2 hours passed from beginning to end.  There were enough action sequences to keep the adrenaline junkies happy, enough humor to keep the laughers happy, and enough story to tie them both together.

Wonder Woman is the DC Comics movie we’ve been waiting for.  We’re hoping DC can build on the success of this movie and make Justice League a huge hit.

We want to thank Alamo Drafthouse El Paso for allowing us to do our review in their lobby.  We also want to thank Raywork Productions for filming & editing the video.

Please tell us what you thought about the movie.  Did Gal Gadot make a convincing Wonder Woman? Did Chris Pine do good as Steve Trevor?  Did DC Comics finally make a movie to rival the Marvel films?  Let us know!

TNTM: DC Comics Wonder Woman movie

Wonder Woman is one of DC Comics Trinity, but she has taken a backseat to Batman and Superman until now. For those who watched Batman vs Superman, it’s hard to deny Wonder Woman stole the show.

Wonder Woman has been gaining popularity over the past few years, and deservedly so. She is a strong, moral role model for everyone (not just women). Most people know Wonder Woman is an Amazon and she has a Lasso of Truth, Magic Gauntlets, and an Invisible Jet, but there is a lot more to her story.

Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star Comics #8 in October 1941. Originally her origin story Queen Hippolyta sculpted her from clay and she was given life by Aphrodite. In recent years her origin has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and raised by her mother Hippolyta and her aunts Antiope and Menalippe.

In the comics Steve Trevor is a World War I pilot whose plane crashes on Themyscira (The movie changes this to World War II). Queen Hippolyta holds a contest amongst her Amazons to determine who will take Steve Trevor back to his world and help in stopping injustice. Hippolyta forbids Diana (Wonder Woman) from participating. Diana wears a mask, enters the competition, and is able to win. Hippolyta allows her to carry out the mission of returning Steve Trevor.

Wonder Woman assumes the civilian identity of Diana Prince. She becomes one of the founding members of the Justice League. She is one of the more powerful characters in the DC Universe. She is the only member of the Justice League that Batman doesn’t have a contingency plan for if she goes rogue.

Powers and Abilities

Wonder Woman is a world class athlete, acrobat, fighter, and strategist. She is trained and experienced in many ancient and modern forms of armed and unarmed combat. She also has an arsenal of god-forged weapons at her disposal.

TNTM: DC Comics “The Button” part 1 & 2 review

DC Comics has been dropping numerous hints that the Watchmen will be crossing over into the mainline DC Universe.  One of the biggest hints is the fact Batman found the Comedian’s blood-stained smiley face button lodged into the wall of the Batcave.

The Button story-line is a four part series in Batman #21 & #22 and Flash #21 & #22.

Batman and Flash (Barry Allen) are arguably two of the best detectives in the DC Universe.  They team up to discover the meaning behind the button appearing in the Batcave.  We don’t actually see Dr. Manhattan or Ozxymandias, but there have been plenty of hints up to this point.

One thing that is perplexing is the fact the button is activated when it comes in close proximity of the Psycho Pirate’s mask.  It emits a blast that knocks Batman across the Batcave.

Reverse Flash (Eobard Thawne) appears and gives Batman a beat-down.  The only mistake Eobard made was touching the button.  It momentarily zapped him out of this reality.  When he popped back in his body was deteriorating and he said he had seen God.

Reverse Flash doesn’t use Speed Force for his powers.  His is a synthetic power.  Upon investigation, Barry finds Eobard is covered with Barry’s Speed Force.

It seems that “The Button” parts 1 & 2 introduce more questions than it answers.  DC Comics has 2 more issues to tie this all together.  I keep hoping to see any of the Watchmen characters, but so far I’ve only been teased.

Since Batman seems to be teaming up with everyone lately, I’d love to see a Batman/Rorshach limited series.  What do you think about the Watchmen characters being brought into the DC Universe? Who would you like to see in a crossover between DC and Watchmen characters?
