VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 8 (w/spoilers)

Episode 8 was a great way to end the season. A few questions were answered, but now we have a lot more.

We learn that Cara Dune’s middle name is Cynthia and Greef is a disgraced Magistrate. We also find out the Mandalorian’s name is Din Djarin. IG-11 proves that Kuill’s programming was top notch. He takes out the two biker scouts that kidnapped Little Yodes. He then proceeds to race through town on the speeder bike taking out troopers along the way.

IG-11 reunites with Greef, Cara, and Mando with Little Yodes in tow. They are able to escape through the sewers. Mando leads them to the Mandalorian hide-a-way hoping they will escort them out to the ship only to find a stack of armor.

The Blacksmith is there melting down the armor from the fallen Mandos so they can reforge it into armor for other Mandos in the future. She tells the group to restock on weapons and ammo and go out through the lava river to get to their ship. After they leave the Blacksmith some Imperial troops try to question her, but she dispatches them quickly with nothing more than her blacksmithing tools.

Mando’s group discovers an ambush of troopers waiting for them at the exit of the underground lava river. IG-11 makes the ultimate sacrifice by self destructing in the midst of the troopers to clear the way for Mando’s group.

Just when you thought they were good to go, Moff Gideon swoops in with his TIE fighter to try to stop them. Mando uses his newly acquired jetpack to plant thermal detonators on the TIE fighter which grounds Moff Gideon.

Greef and Cara decide to stay on Nevarro and keep running the Bounty Hunters guild. Mando and Little Yodes take off in the Razorcrest to find where to return Yodes to his people. You think that is the end…. but no. The Jawas are scavenging Moff Gideon’s wrecked TIE fighter when you see a black blade cut through the side. Moff Gideon steps out of the TIE fighter holding what appears to be the Dark Saber.

If you don’t know what the Dark Saber is you can watch Clone Wars or take the quick way and Google it. The Mandalorian is giving us a great Star Wars story without relying on big name character cameos. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a ton of easter eggs and references to other Star Wars stuff though. So far, season 1 seems to have balanced out the new characters and story-line with just the right amount of pandering to the fans.

Have you watched all the episodes yet? What did you think about the this fourth episode? Did we miss any Easter eggs? Let us know in the comments.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 7 (w/spoilers)

Episode 7 reunites Mando with a lot of the characters we’ve met in earlier episodes. Now you know why the character building episodes were thrown into the season. It starts with a message from Greef Karga that he wants Mando’s help to get rid of the Imperial presence on his planet.

Ever since Mando took off with Little Yodes, the former Empire has been coming there in large numbers. That is making it difficult for the Bounty Hunters Guild to do business. If he helps get rid of the former Imperials, Greef will clear his name so he doesn’t have to keep running.

Mando is pretty sure it’s a trap, but he doesn’t really have many options. His first stop is to enlist the help of Cara Dune. Cara is not too hyped to help until she learns it is against the former Empire. Next they talk to Kuill. That’s when they find out the Ugnaught picked up the IG-11 droid that Mando blasted in episode 1. The IG-11 droid was re-programmed to serve and protect rather than hunt and destroy.

Mando meets up with Greef and his crew outside the city. They camp overnight before heading into the city to trick the Imperial client and kill him. During the night they are attacked by some flying creatures that end up poisoning Greef. Little Yodes is able to Force-heal him. In the morning they proceed to the city.

Once at the city limits, Greef spins around and shoots the two bounty hunters he brought with him. He lets Mando know the original plan was to jump him there and take his body and Little Yodes to the Imperial client. He had a change of heart when Little Yodes saved his life.

So, new plan is to bring Mando in cuffed with the little child carrier empty. Kuill is secretly sent back to the Razorcrest with Little Yodes. Once they get in front of the client, Mando is to shoot him. Then they hope the mercenaries will all leave since their paycheck has been killed. The plan might have worked if not for another Imperial bad guy showing up The client receives a call from Moff Gideon. He lets him know he is there for Little Yodes. His Death Troopers fill the place with laser fire killing the client and his Stormtroopers. When Mando peeks outside he sees the Death Troopers and a bunch of personnel carriers delivering more troops.

Then you see and hear the TIE Fighter. The coolest TIE Fighter I’ve ever seen lands and Moff Gideon gets out. Mando breaks radio silence and tells Kuill to get back to the ship quickly and take off without them. Unfortunately that message was intercepted and a coupla biker scouts cut him down within eyesight of the Razorcrest. They scoop up Little Yodes and head back to the city.

The episode ends with Mando, Greef, and Cara pinned down in the building. Kuill is presumably dead and we don’t know what the re-programmed IG-11 is up to. There is much despair for Mando right now. There is one episode left in season one. We can’t wait to see how they get out of this predicament and leave us wanting more in season 2.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 6 (w/spoilers)

Episode 6 sees Mando hook up with an old acquaintance, Ranzar Malk (Mark Boone Jr) to pull a job off the books to make some money. It’s not easy being a single parent out there in this harsh galaxy.

The team is made up of four plus Mando. There is team leader Mayfeld (Bill Burr), an old love interest of Mando’s Xi’an (Natalia Tena), Burg (Clancy Brown), and a droid named Zero (Richard Ayoade). Mando finds out the heist is to get one of their colleagues off a Republic prison ship. They really only need him for his ship.

The team turns on Mando and toss him into a holding cell while they try to make their escape. See, there wasn’t supposed to be any Republic humans on board. There was one guard in the control room and he activated the distress call. Now they are in a time constraint to exit before the Republic sends reinforcements.

He’s a Mandalorian, so of course he finds a way to escape the prison. He makes short work of the team that turned on him just in time to take out Zero. Now, Zero stayed on the ship to help coordinate the heist. He got nosy and went through the ship’s logs and figured out that Little Yodes was worth some scratch. He was too slow though, as Mando shoots Zero before he can take out Yodes.

Mando takes the guy they broke out of prison back to Ranzar and gets paid. Ranzar had plans to doublecross Mando and shoot his ship down. Just about the time he calls the gunship up to do that they discover Mando planted the distress beacon on them. Right on cue Rebel X-wings drop out of hyperspace in front of the base and destroy it while Mando cruises off into the sunset.

A little more action in this episode. Some really cool firefights happen in the Rebel prison ship. There are only 2 more episodes this season so it will be interesting to see how they tie it all up and get us ready for season 2.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 5 (w/spoilers)

Episode 5 starts out with a dogfight in space. An unnamed bounty hunter is bearing down on Mando. The Mando is able to pull a stop-short maneuver and get the drop on the guy. In doing so he takes some damage to the Razorcrest.

Mando limps his ship to the nearest spaceport. We nearly jumped out of our seat when he got clearance to land by … Mos Eisley tower!

He needs money to repair his ship so he looks for bounties in the local cantina. Yes, it is the same cantina that Luke and Obi-Wan met up with Han and Chewie. He finds a rookie bounty hunter that needs help bringing in a big bounty.

Turns out the bounty is an elite assassin level target by the name Fennec Shand (portrayed by Ming-Na Wen). Mando agrees only when he is offered the full bounty as long as the rookie gets the credit.

They end up capturing Fennec, but she gets inside the rookies head while Mando is out capturing a dewback for transportation. She lets the rookie know Mando is worth far more to the bounty hunters guild than her.

The rookie shoots Fennec and goes back to Mos Eisley to hold Little Yodes hostage. Things don’t work out the way he planned, and Mando quickly dispatches him. He pays for his ship repairs and leaves Mos Eisley.

The scene that has everyone talking is a mysterious figure discovers Fennec Shands body in the Dune Sea desert. All we see are the boots and a cape. The theorists are saying it is Boba Fett. Personally I don’t buy into that. There are only 3 episodes left and we haven’t seen Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) yet. My money is it is him that was employing Fennec Shand and now he is upset his best protection has been taken out. What are your theories on this new figure?

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 4 (w/spoilers)

Episode 4 was a little slower than the previous 3 episodes, but it did fill in a lot about the Mandalorian. It was verified that he does in fact remove his helmet, but only when alone. That means no one has seen his face since he was a child taken in by the Mandos.

The Mandalorian finds a very backwater planet that doesn’t even have a spaceport to hide out. He runs into Cara Dune (Gina Carano), an ex Rebel shock trooper who is also hiding out on the planet.

They get into a bit of a tussle (Cara Dune appeared to be winning) before they join forces to help a small local group of farmers to defeat a raiding clan of Klatooinians. Those Klatooinians have some big firepower in the form of an up-armored AT-ST. They took a somewhat goofy looking vehicle that the Ewoks made short work of, and turned it into a really evil looking killing machine.

Long story short, the farmers win and The Mandalorian is thinking about staying in the village with Baby Yoda. That is, until a bounty hunter tries to sniper Baby Yoda (He deserves his own name, so let’s call him Little Yodes). The Mando then realizes he has to stay on the run and take Little Yodes with him to keep him safe.

If you watch the credits you’ll notice Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of Ron Howard aka Opie aka Richie Cunningham) directed this episode. She did a pretty decent job of capturing the human emotions side of the Mandalorian.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 3 (w/spoilers)

Episode 3 of the Mandalorian had such a Nerdtastic moment that it almost brought tears to our eyes. The Mando delivered the asset and collected his payment of a buttload of Beskar steel.

BTW, pay attention to that scene, the camtono is a throwback reference to Willrow Hood running through Bespin carrying that same type of safe.

The Mando takes the Beskar to their hideaway. Some of the Mandos don’t like the fact he worked with some remnants of the Empire since they are the ones responsible for them having to hide. There is a little scuffle, but they decide they are on the same side and make peace. The blacksmith/armorer agrees to make the Mando a new breastplate to replace the one that was thrashed by the mudhorn. He wears his new Beskar armor to get his new bounty target. All the other bounty hunters are jealous of his big payday.

long story short, he has second thoughts about turning over the baby Yoda. He goes all John Wick on the stormtroopers guarding the location. He grabs baby Yoda and heads back to his ship.
Unfortunately that sets off all the bounty hunters tracking fobs and they head him off in the street. He does a pretty good job of holding them off for a while. Just when it looks like he is penned down with no hope… The rest of the Mandos show up to rescue him. You see jetpack Mandos, heavy artillery Mandos, and every other conceivable type of Mando. They clear the way for him to get to his ship.

Greef Carga gets the drop on the Mando in his ship, but is quickly shot out of the back hatch. As the Mando is flying away one of the jetpack Mandos flies next to him like the Rocketeer, salutes him, and leaves.

This episode, while short, was packed with great storytelling and awesome action. When the jetpack Mandos made an appearance I had a Clone Wars flashback. The story should really start picking up on action now since EVERY bounty hunter in the universe should be coming after him. Maybe we will start to see some of the big name bounty hunters make appearances.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 2 (with spoilers!)

Episode 2 of the Mandalorian picked right up from where the first episode ended. The bounty must be in high demand as a group of mercenaries try to get the target from the Mandalorian.

Not everyone wants the bounty alive. IG-11 had instructions to kill the target and the mercenaries from this episode were trying to take out the target as well.

In true Mandalorian fashion, he disperses all the attackers. After a quick patch job on himself and his armor, he proceeds to his ship, the Razorcrest. Once he rises over the last hill he notices a clan of Jawas stripping his ship of any sell-able parts.

A kerfuffle ensues as he tries to stop the Jawas and get his parts back. He quickly finds the Jawas Sandcrawler is like a tank and is unable to get inside. He returns to our Ugnaught friend from the first episode who helps him negotiate a barter with the Jawas for the return of his parts.

They come to an agreement that the Jawas will return the parts if the Mandalorian gets them a particular egg. The problem is the big hairy rhino-like creature doesn’t want to give it up.

Long story short, the Mandalorian gets the egg after being beat up pretty bad. We also learn the little Yoda baby has some pretty strong force powers. The Mando gets his parts back, rebuilds the ship with the Ugnaughts help, and leaves the planet… end scene.

This episode was a bit shorter than the first (39 minutes versus 30 minutes). I for one am okay with this. I would rather have a solid 30 minute episode than an hour long episode with useless filler that detracts from the story.

Have you watched both episodes yet? Did you like the second episode as much as the first. Did we miss any Easter eggs? Let us know in the comments.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian Episode 1

Disney Plus launched November 12th on the back of their exclusive Star Wars based show “The Mandalorian”. With about 10 million subscribers in the first day, I would say it was a good move.

This review is chock full of spoilers. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, do that first. Then come back here and fanboy out with us.

The first episode has lots of references to the other Star Wars properties. It also has some big name cameos. Pedro Pascal plays the title character. At least we think that is him. He never removes his helmet. There is even a little joke about it in the episode.

Carl Weathers portrays a bounty guild admin. He collects the targets from bounty hunters and pays them for their haul. Nick Nolte lent his voice to an Ugnaught that helps the Mandalorian out. Werner Herzog plays someone with a special high price bounty. Taika Waititi gives a great voice performance as IG-11, the bounty hunting droid. There are lots more big names in future episodes.

This first episode really captured the feel of the original trilogy while also developing a new seedy underworld to the Star Wars Universe. The movies have only shown us the big heroes and villains. The Mandalorian is introducing us to all the important players on the fringe of the overarching Star Wars story. We can’t wait for the second episode to be available for streaming so we can geek out some more.

Have you watched the first episode yet? Do you agree with us that it is the shot in the arm that Star Wars needs right now? Let us know in the comments.
