Animal Services Moves Pets to Offsite Shelter Due to Extreme Weather

Due to inclement weather, the Department of Animal Services has closed down the outdoor kennels located at the Animal Services Center located at 5001 Fred Wilson, and has moved dogs to a temporary offsite shelter at Sunrise Park (3800 Sunrise Ave).

The Animal Services Center is currently housing a large animal population as the department continues to experience a longer-than-usual peak season, and space remains limited for incoming animals.

The offsite shelter will be used as a temporary housing facility for dogs during the next week, while temperatures remain below freezing overnight.

Additionally, Animal Services officials say, “In an effort to continue our goal of becoming a “no-kill” shelter, the department is calling for support from the community to adopt, foster, volunteer and donate.”

ADOPT

Pets will be available for adoption at the Sunrise Park Shelter between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. through Saturday, January 5, and adoption fees for all large dogs over 6 months old will be waived. The Sunrise Park Shelter will observe holiday hours on December 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will be closed on January 1.

FOSTER

For those not looking to adopt at this time, fostering a pet is a great option. By fostering, families will be able to care for a shelter pet temporarily, which will free-up space for other adoptable pets at the shelter. To learn more about our foster program, click here.

VOLUNTEER

To help care for pets both at the Animal Services Center and at the temporary offsite shelter, the Department is putting out a call for volunteers to assist with walking dogs. Volunteers 18 years or older can learn more about how to get started by emailing epasvolunteer@elpasotexas.gov.

DONATE

Another way to support the shelter’s lifesaving efforts is to donate much-needed items for the offsite shelter:

  • Stainless Steel Bowls
  • Wire Crates
  • Towels and Blankets (new or gently used)
  • Dog Treats

Animal Services is hopeful that with help from the community, the center will reduce the animal population and find forever homes for the hundreds of pets in our care. For more information on El Paso Animal Services, visit the website.

Animal Services Hosts “90 by 2020” Adoption Special to Celebrate 91% Live-Release Rate

The Department of Animal Services is celebrating its record breaking 91.2% live-release rate for the month of February by hosting a “90 by 2020” adoption special this weekend.

Starting Friday, March 9, the first 90 pets to be adopted will be free. After the first 90 pets are adopted, every pet after will have their adoption fee reduced to just $9. This adoption event will run through Sunday, March 11.

After years of work by Animal Services staff, volunteers and partners, the department announced that more than 90% of the animals that entered the shelter in February 2018 had a positive outcome.

Via a news release, Animal Services officials said, “We would like to thank the community for their involvement in helping the department improve…with challenges brought on by the busier spring and summer months, Animal Services is encouraging those who support the City’s “no-kill” goal to be directly involved by adopting, fostering, volunteering, and/or donating. Through these types of activities the shelter’s live-release rate has increased from around 25% in 2013, to the record breaking save rates seen in recent months.”

Last month Animal Services had an average monthly live-release rate of 91.2%. This milestone month is a positive indication that the department is well on its way of reaching the goal, set out by City leaders, that Animal Services should have an average annual live-release rate of 90% or higher by 2020.
