Two Downtown exits on Loop375 West to close

Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDoT) announced Wednesday that two westbound exit ramps into downtown from the newly opened Border West Expressway will close within the next two days.

TxDoT officials will evaluate operational improvements, in coordination with the City of El Paso, Customs and Border Protection and all affected agencies.

Campbell Street and Oregon Street will no longer be access points to the westbound lanes. Drivers leaving downtown heading west may access the Border West Expressway via the Coles/Paisano Interchange, or by taking Paisano to Spur 1966.

Drivers headed into downtown can use the same interchanges. The Coles/Paisano Interchange allows drivers to use direct connector ramps to access the Border Highway to and from east of downtown.

The completion of the Border West Expressway changed the final configuration of Campbell and other streets downtown. The finished project made Loop 375 a continuous high-speed roadway with limited access, necessary for safety.

This summer, Campbell became a two-way street from 7th to Border Highway with access in from, and out to the westbound lanes of Border Highway. Oregon remained an “in” only.

Officials say the closures will last an “indeterminate length of time,” as options are considered to optimize functionality.
