Stanton House to Feature Taft-Diaz Restaurant, Headed by Juárez Chef Oscar Herrera

The late chef Anthony Bourdain said “Mexican food is the most undervalued, underappreciated world cuisine with tremendous, tremendous potential.”

Led by one of Juárez’s top chefs, Taft-Diaz will explore that potential when it opens at Stanton House in Downtown El Paso later this season.

Taft-Diaz will be Chef Oscar Herrera’s second restaurant in our region. Many El Pasoans and Juarenses know him has the head chef at Flor de Nogal Hacienda and Restaurant in Juárez. Much like his other restaurant, Taft-Diaz will raise the bar for what you expect from Mexican food.

Taft-Diaz’s brunch and dinner menu will feature a variety of international cuisine with a Mexican flair, flavor and fresh ingredients.

For brunch, try the Gyro Al Pastor, a flavorful dish that brings together the Mediterranean flatbread wrap with juicy marinated meat, cilantro tztziki, salsa macha, black bean puree, avocado-mint puree, panela ahumado, pineapple, cucumber and radish.

Chef Herrera’s fusion of international cuisines also includes his take on Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches. The Banh Mi features crispy chorizo, chicken, fried meatballs, pickled veggies, cilantro, Serrano, mint, preserved lemon, peanut sauce and garlic aoli.

The dinner menu includes appetizers like the Braised Short Rib Tamal, a fancy take on a classic Mexican delicacy, as well as steak, seafood and chicken entrees, including the Cornish Hen Jardiniere. The Hen, served whole, is drizzled with traditional Mexican mole verde, and includes carrot puree, mini-corn, artichokes, and a smoked crème fraiche.

Named in honor of the historic 1909 meeting between presidents William Taft and Porfirio Diaz in El Paso, the first time presidents from the U.S. and Mexico met in person, Chef Herrera and Taft-Diaz will provide the perfect place for a casual afternoon brunch or a dressed-up Downtown dinner.

“We hope El Pasoans and travelers will come to Downtown El Paso for something new and fresh, and that includes the delicious menu created for Taft-Diaz by Chef Herrera,” said general manager Aaron Rodriguez. “We hope that all of Hotel Stanton House’s amenities create a new standard for hospitality in El Paso.”

The nearly completed 42-room Hotel Stanton House is an experience-driven boutique hotel that will also feature chic interior design features, contemporary artwork, a lounge, a rooftop patio bar and a full-service spa.
