Tornillo Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Meza- Chavez has been named the 2017 ESC-Region 19 Superintendent of the Year for her achievements and excellence as a public school administrator.
“Being named Region 19 SOTY to me means that the work of many individuals is being recognized as we all serve to help improve the lives of Tornillo ISD children”, Dr. Meza-Chavez said. “To represent the Region, this provides me the opportunity to share about the unique collaboration and work many other individuals are also doing to help the children in their respective communities. We are one – Region#19!”
“We are fortunate to have such dedicated superintendents within Region 19,” said Dr. Armando Aguirre, Education Service Center Region 19 Executive Director. “Congratulations to Dr. Jeannie Meza-Chavez.”
Dr. Meza-Chavez has been superintendent for Tornillo ISD since April 17, 2014. Some of the accomplishments she is most proud of as superintendent include; the passage of a $10 million bond, which is allowing their 92 year old district to have a track and turf football field along with HVAV and roofing upgrades; plus the completion of a $1.2 million 12 classroom addition at the high school.
“I envision the future of education in Tornillo and our Region as one of continued collaboration and communication. We need to embrace our unique opportunity to show others that El Paso has great public education options. I am a product of public education and I was blessed to have individuals who instilled in me that limited resources and language barriers are not excuses. Through Faith, Family and the community of Region 19, hard work and persistence is what will continue to help us all to keep the focus on improving the lives of children.”
Dr. Chavez-Meza will go on to represent the region in the state program. The state Superintendent of the Year Award will be presented at the 2017 Texas Association of School Administrators/Texas Association of School Boards (TASA/TASB) Annual Convention in Dallas, Texas.
