VIDEO: 7.1 Quake shakes Southern California Friday night

Southern California residents were rattled by a large earthquake Friday night, as a magnitude 7.1 quake struck in Kern County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was centered  10 and a half miles from Ridgecrest, and hit at 8:19 p.m., California time.

Those same officials re-classified Thursday’s quake as a ‘foreshock,’ as the magnitude of Friday’s event surpassed the initial event.

CNN interviewed several residents of Ridgecrest, who shared that immediately following the quake, smoke then fire rose from a previously-damaged mobile home park.  Another resident said her home and the neighborhood continued to roll for several minutes after the temblor.

The quake was again felt as far away as Los Angeles, where Dodgers fans cheered while Dodger stadium rolled with the quake; meanwhile in Las Vegas, cameras caught fans watching a NBA summer league game evacuating the venue after the quake hit.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) officials reported a large earthquake in Southern California, roughly halfway between Bakersfield and Las Vegas.

The quake, initially reported to be a magnitude 6.6, has since been reclassified as a 6.4 magnitude quake, struck Thursday morning and was felt in parts of Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas metro areas.

Communities closer to the quake’s epicenter are starting to report in varying amounts of damage.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting damage and fires in Kern County, near the quake’s epicenter.

The quake struck at 10:33 Pacific Daylight Time, and USGS officials say it is the strongest quake to hit the area since 1999.
