Eastwood Robotics Team Earns Honors at World Competition

The Eastwood High School Robotics Team received the Design Award at the 11th annual VEX Worlds Competition in Louisville, KY last month.

The Design Award is presented to a team that demonstrates the ability to implement the most effective and efficient robot design process. Their Engineering Notebook and discussion with the judges demonstrated the team’s ability to produce a quality robot with minimal adult assistance.

This team’s Engineering Notebook is a clear, complete, and organized documentation of the robot design process that demonstrates effective management of skills, time, and material resources. Students on this team were able to explain how they developed an effective game strategy and robot design.

Team Members for the Troopers are: Diana Segura, Maria Adeliz Ordonez, Frances Rangel, Emily Ocon, Andromeda Delaney, Sara Graham, Amanda Coons, Ricardo Ramirez, Ethan Ramos, Giovanni Leon, Carlos Rodriguez, and Michael Solis.

This year’s VEX Worlds Robotics tournament was the largest robotics tournament, according to the Guinness World Records with over 30,000 people, including 1,648 teams from 30 nations participating.

The week-long celebration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), diversity, and robotics kicked-off with the VEX Robotics Championships which crowned elementary, middle school, high school, and university champions from China, Canada, and the United States.

The Troopers are a 4x World Qualifier, 4x West Texas Excellence Award Champions and 2018 Excellence Award winner at the West Texas VEX Robotics Tournament qualifying them to the VEX Worlds Tournament.

In addition, Eastwood HS mentored elementary teams which also placed at the competition. The elementary team came away with the following awards: 1st Time World Qualifier, 2018 Excellence and Team Award winners at the West Texas VEX IQ Robotics Tournament qualifying them to the VEX IQ Worlds Tournament and the Mini Troopers team received the Create Award at VEX IQ Worlds.  The Mini Troopers were: Julian Torres, Layla Falcon, Emily Valdez, and Timothy Torres.

The teams are coached by Raul Torres, Eastwood High School, and Eunice Torres, Scotsdale Elementary School.
