El Paso Airport Receives Perfect Score for Safety from FAA

El Paso International Airport (EPIA) passes a rigorous Annual Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Certification Inspection with Zero Discrepancies.

“Passing the inspection with no discrepancies requires a focus on safety and careful coordination of Airport Operations, Airport Field Maintenance, and ARFF staff year-round,” said Monica Lombraña, Managing Director of Aviation and International Bridges.

Every year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducts a three-day comprehensive review and thorough inspection of all commercial airports nationwide to ensure that airports are following national safety standards.

Successful Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 139 certification is required for an airport to continue commercial operations.

Included in the annual inspection is a review of:

  • The Airport’s Emergency Plan
  • Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) equipment, training, and response times
  • Airport personnel operations and procedures, including self-inspection and maintenance logs
  • Fixed Base Operators aircraft fueling procedures and fuel truck safety
  • Evaluation of all airfield markings, lighting and signage
  • Construction Safety

El Paso to Host Smart Airports and Regions Conference, Exhibition in 2019

The City of El Paso and El Paso International Airport has been selected to host the Smart Airports and Regions Conference & Exhibition to be held on July 21-24, 2019.

“The Smart Airports and Regions Conference & Exhibition is the premier event covering how SMART Airports and their adjacent Regions are leveraging ‘Connectivity’ to stimulate ‘Innovation and Opportunity’ and as such, we could not have picked a better host than the City of El Paso,” said Andrew Hazell, Commercial Director, Aviation Media.

According to city officials, the event attracts over 500 strategic level delegates, from over 50 different countries and over 90 airport and industry experts and speakers.

Delegates meet annually to discuss trends, future opportunities and exchange ideas with industry experts in airport design, construction & development, commercial development, real estate, non-aeronautical revenue.

“We are extremely honored and excited the City of El Paso will host next year’s Smart Airports and Regions Conference & Exhibition,” said Mayor Dee Margo. “We welcome the opportunity to showcase our city and the surrounding region to hundreds of aviation industry leaders from around the globe.”

The three-day conference covers a wide range of topics including technology, innovation, passenger experience with a focus on the economic impact that airports have on their community.

Southwest Airlines Expands Service at El Paso International Airport

On Thursday, officials with the El Paso International Airport announced that Southwest Airlines will be expanding service to Denver International Airport with daily service – excluding Saturdays – starting November 4, 2018.

“We are extremely pleased to work together with our airline partners as we continuously build El Paso’s connectivity by adding options for passengers traveling to cities like Denver,” said Monica Lombraña, City of El Paso’s Managing Director of Aviation and International Bridges.

“Flights to Denver increase connectivity to both the East Coast, West Coast as well as destinations in Mexico.”

This makes the 15th new non-stop flight announcement for El Paso International Airport since 2015, which currently has non-stop flights available to 13 destinations nationwide.

In March, Southwest announced one weekly non-stop flight to Denver that begins on October 7, 2018.

Southwest Airlines Expands Service at El Paso International Airport

El Paso International Airport (ELP) is pleased to announce that Southwest Airlines will be expanding service to Denver International Airport with a non-stop, weekly flight starting October 7, 2018.

“El Pasoans have even more options to fly to Denver, this is great for the community’s connectivity, and is wonderful that the airlines are taking notice of the potential our city offers,” Mayor Dee Margo said.

This non-stop flight to Denver will add options for passengers when making their travel plans.

“This is the 10th new non-stop flight El Paso International Airport has announced since 2016, with every new flight we build a stronger economy, and enhance leisure and business travel,” said Monica Lombraña, A.A.E., Managing Director of Aviation and international Bridges.

The flight to Denver International Airport improves connectivity to both the East and West Coast as it is centrally located and serves a large number of cities non-stop in the U.S. as well as destinations in Mexico.

El Paso Airport Earns 2nd in Nation Honor for Best Customer Experience

El Paso International Airport (EPIA), for the second year in a row, has tied for second place as the Best Airport in North America in airport service quality.

“We are ecstatic to be recognized for the hard work and dedication of our exceptional staff, tenants and partners, for the second time in a row!” said Monica Lombraña, Managing Director of Aviation and International Bridges, “To land among the top airports in the United States and Canada in terms of outstanding customer service and passenger satisfaction is a great accomplishment.”

The airport’s 2017 recognition is part of the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards presented by the Airports Council International (ACI).

ASQ is the only worldwide program to survey passengers at the airport on their day of travel. The program measures passengers’ views of 34 key performance indicators. Approximately 74 percent of the world’s top 100 busiest airports are part of the ASQ network, which delivers 600,000 individual surveys per year in 42 languages in 84 countries. The program served 343 airports in 2017.

This is EPIA’s second award since commencing participation in the Airport Service Quality survey program in 2015; El Paso International Airport tied with Toronto and Ottawa Airports for second place. A total of 47 Airports in North America participated in the 2017 ACI ASQ program.

EPIA provided service to over 2.9 million passengers in 2017, a 4.3 percent increase over the previous year. Since 2016, EPIA has added nine new non-stop flights.

The Airport continues investing in its facilities to maintain a pleasant travelling experience for its passengers. Recently implemented improvements include nursing rooms, a pet relief area, the ELP junior Pilot’s lounge play area, and the interactive ELP Virtuwall.

Programmed and ongoing improvements include the reconstruction of Runway 4-22, the Checked Baggage Inspection System, landscaping improvements, and a state of the art Passenger Notification System.

Passenger Traffic up at El Paso International Airport

The City of El Paso and El Paso International Airport announced Wednesday that total passenger traffic for the year 2017 increased 4.3% over 2016.

El Paso International Airport served 2,928,159 passengers in 2017, which is 120,425 more passengers than the previous year. This is the second year in a row that the airport has realized year-over-year growth; in 2016 passenger traffic was up 1.6% over 2015.

“With more new flights set to begin service this spring, total number of non-stop flights added within the past three years is up to nine; we are witnessing a steady growth in routes and capacity and we will continue our work to maintain that trend in 2018,” said Monica Lombraña, A.A.E., Managing Director of Aviation and International Bridges.

The increase in passenger traffic is a result of the new services added over the past three years.

Flights that contributed to the increase in traffic include: one additional daily flight to Atlanta on Delta; two weekly flights to San Diego, Las Vegas, Orlando/Sanford, and Oakland on Allegiant; and one daily flight to Denver on United.

New service commencing this spring include one additional weekly flight to San Diego and Las Vegas on Southwest; four weekly flights to Denver and two weekly flights to Chicago on Frontier; two daily flights to Chicago on United; and one daily flight to Chicago on American. United and American will also increase aircraft size on certain routes.

El Paso International Airport, American Airlines Expand Service to Chicago

Starting April 4, 2018, El Paso International Airport and American Airlines will add a non-stop flight to Chicago, with increased seating capacity.

“Enhanced access to Chicago will benefit both business and leisure travelers with the scheduling flexibility and additional opportunities to connect to the East Coast, Europe and Asia. We are focused on building world-wide connectivity for the traveling community,” said Monica Lombraña, A.A.E., Managing Director of Aviation and International Bridges.

Daily non-stop flights on American Airlines will be upgraded from a Bombardier CRJ-700 with 63 seats to a roomy Boeing 737-800 with 154 seats. Flights will be increased from once to twice daily, departing El Paso at 7:00 a.m. and 1:07 p.m.

“Our airline partners are taking notice that El Paso has a vibrant regional economy and there are economic opportunities that they and residents, businesses and visitors can all benefit from,” Mayor Dee Margo said.

“Airport staff has been working towards the strategic goal to grow the core business of air transportation. They have upgraded the terminal, operated with fiscal responsibility and are continuously communicating with the airlines. Their hard work and dedication shows in the results: Nine additional flights in the past three years,” City Manager Tommy Gonzalez said.

El Paso International Airport Upgrading Checked Baggage Inspection System

Starting June 6th, the El Paso International Airport (EPIA) is starting work on a new Checked Baggage Inspection Screening System (CBIS).

As part of the two-year construction project, the existing checked baggage inspection system located behind the airline ticket counter will be rebuilt. A temporary checked bag drop off location has been set up in the main lobby of the airport terminal to screen baggage during the construction period.

IMPACT TO TRAVELERS

  • Commencing June 6, 2016, Checked Baggage will no longer be dropped off at the airline ticket counter for duration of the project
  • Travelers with checked baggage must first check in at airline ticket counter prior to dropping bags off at the Checked Bag Drop location
  • After checking in at airline ticket counter, travelers will drop checked bags off at the temporary Checked Bag Drop location in the main lobby of the airport terminal
  • Travelers will need to allow for extra time during peak travel times; it is recommended to arrive at least 2 hours prior to flight’s departure time.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The $32 million project will enhance the security and baggage screening capabilities at the airport. It will centralize the checked bag screening process and make it more efficient by speeding up the time it takes to inspect checked baggage before it is loaded onto airplanes. The project is funded by the Passenger Facility Charge, Airport Enterprise funds and the Transportation and Security Administration (TSA).

The CBIS upgrade and expansion will feature:

  • An enclosed nearly 32,000 square foot structure to protect screening machines and personnel from the elements
  • Capability to screen a higher volume of baggage in a shorter amount of time
  • The ability to activate additional curbside conveyor lines for future airline expansion
  • Enhanced machine reliability-currently if a machine goes down, baggage must be moved to another machine which can cause delays.

El Paso International Airport Now Offers Nursing Lounges

El Paso International Airport (EPIA) now offers clean, private and comfortable spaces where nursing mothers can go to feed their little ones while traveling.

Nursing lounges are conveniently located on the second floor in Concourse A, near gate A3, and in Concourse B, near gate B6; both are post security checkpoints. The lounges are each outfitted with a washing station for cleaning equipment, a diaper changing area, easily accessible electrical outlets, comfortable seating and a secured door.

“We wanted to provide a space that was quiet, clean and comfortable for nursing mothers to assist them in making their traveling experience a little easier at our airport,” said Monica Lombraña, Director of Aviation, El Paso International Airport.

A third lounge is scheduled to open this summer in the terminal’s passenger receiving area. The passenger receiving area is currently undergoing renovations and is located on the first floor before the security checkpoint.

El Paso International Airport ties for 2nd in National 2016 ASQ Awards

El Paso International Airport tied for second place in Best Airport by Region in the 2016 Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards in airport service quality.

This is the Airport’s first award since commencing participation in the Airport Service Quality survey program in 2015; El Paso International Airport tied with Tampa and Ottawa Airports for 2nd place. A total of 42 Airports in North America participated in the 2016 ACI ASQ program.

El Paso International Airport provided service to over 2.8 million passengers in 2016, a 1.6% increase over the previous year. In 2016, non-stop service to San Diego, Orlando/Sanford and Oakland, as well as additional service to Las Vegas, was added with the introduction of Allegiant Airlines.

The Airport continues investing in its facilities and amenities to further its mission of providing a safe, aesthetically pleasing and pleasurable travelling experience for its passengers with its implementation of a five-year capital improvement program totaling over $109 million.

Therapy Dogs to Ease Holiday Stress for Travelers at EPIA

Therapy dogs will greet travelers at the El Paso International Airport (EPIA) to take some stress out of the hectic holiday travel.

EPIA will welcome about 250,000 passengers, plus thousands more of their friends and family members picking them up or sending them off, during the month of December. The week leading up to Christmas Day is gearing up to be the busiest week of the month.

In anticipation of this busy holiday travel week, EPIA has partnered with the local chapter of Therapy Dogs International to provide travelers with a chance to meet and pet a licensed therapy dog. Volunteers will be making their way throughout the terminal at various times of the day starting today and continuing through Friday, December 23rd.

“We know that air travel can be stressful, especially during the holidays,” said El Paso Aviation Director Monica Lombraña. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone who comes to the airport has a positive experience and these wonderful, four-legged volunteers will help ease the tension of travel.”

The addition of therapy dogs is just one of many services EPIA is offering this year to provide travelers with a welcoming experience. Outdoor and indoor holiday decorations, Airport Ambassadors and Holiday Performances are some of the holiday initiatives EPIA has undertaken to help make this season’s travel a pleasant one.

El Paso International Airport Invites Travelers to Enroll in TSA Pre✓®

El Paso International Airport (EPIA) invites passengers to enroll in the popular TSA Pre✓® expedited screening program at a temporary application center from September 19-30, 2016.

TSA Pre✓® is an expedited screening program that enables identified low-risk air travelers to enjoy a smart and more efficient screening experience at more than 180 airports, including El Paso. For TSA Pre✓® travelers, there is no need to remove shoes, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, light outerwear or belts.

Members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) “trusted traveler” programs, such as Global Entry, SENTRI or NEXUS, automatically receive TSA Pre✓® benefits.

The screening program will be available from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Beacon Room in the La Placita Shopping Center on the first floor of the airport’s terminal.

El Paso International Airport’s 5-year Capital Plan Approved

City Council today ratified the five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the El Paso International Airport (EPIA) estimated at approximately $107.5 million.

The capital plan for Fiscal Years 2017-2021 will predominately target airfield pavement projects including reconstructing the primary runway and various taxiways while still addressing other airport maintenance and safety needs, such as upgrades to escalators, heating and cooling systems, and the baggage inspection area.

“The main focus of the CIP is pavement rehabilitation within the airfield. Approximately $52.57 million will be allocated to improving our runways, taxiways and airfield perimeter roads,” Aviation Director Monica Lombraña said.

She added, “The investment in airfield pavement allows the airport to stay compliant with Part 139 FAA regulations on safety and the quality of the pavement required for continued commercial operations.  In addition, the airport in conjunction with TSA has programmed approximately $29.5 million for the Consolidated Baggage Inspection System project.”

The CIP funding includes $18.9 million from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Grants, $50.4 million from the Passenger Facility Charge Program, $14.2 million from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), $2.5 million from the Customer Facility Charge and $21.4 million from the Airport Enterprise Funds.

The plan was developed and coordinated with all federal agencies, airlines and other stakeholders at the airport.

The balance of the CIP includes projects that address operational and aesthetic improvements for the airport and facility replacement of assets that have exceeded their useful life.
