The hits will be coming from all sides Friday night at Southwest University Field, and the Chihuahuas aren’t even in town.
Fighting out of the red corner will be El Pasoan and IBF World Featherweight Champion Jennifer Han, set to defend it against Colombia’s Calixta Silgado Friday night at Southwest University Park.
Both fighters made weight at 125.4 pounds for Han and 123.8 for Silgado, said they were both hungry for not only a meal after the weigh in, but to show who the best fighter is.
“It’s mainly mental preparation now, I’m going to go eat, get my carbs and go rest to be mentally focused on the fight,” Han said. “I have a tough opponent with Calixta Salgido, she’s ready, she’s been ready for a fight. Now she’s going to come and try and take away my title, but I’m not going to let that happen and I’m very excited to be here in El Paso.”
Han holds a record of 13 wins, 3 losses and a draw, is El Paso’s first-ever World Champion. She was originally set to defend her title against Lilian Martinez, who failed to show for her visa interview less than two weeks ago, forcing a change in opponent.
Silgado who enters the bout with a better record than Han at 14-5-3, looks to capitalize on another title shot.
“This has always been an opportunity I’ve cherished. I’ve already had four other chances at it,” Silgado said. “Unfortunately I haven’t been victorious, this is one more and I hope to God it goes in my favor.”
Event producer, Lester Bedford, said they are expecting over 5,000 in attendance at the ballpark-the first of its kind to be held in the two-year old venue.
Despite the quick turnaround, Han spoke with confidence and excitement in wake of her title defense set for 10 rounds.
“I’m very proud to represent El Paso, I’ve always been proud of El Paso and I’m happy to be fighting here, especially at the new ball park. I’m just so excited and blessed,” Han said. “Since this opportunity doesn’t happen all the time, everybody needs to come out and support me.”
The fight card will feature six other bouts all set to four rounds. Event starts at 7 p.m.
