EPCC Theater presents regional premiere of musical ‘Closer Than Ever’

The El Paso Community College (EPCC) Theater Ensemble will offer performances of Maltby & Shire’s Closer Than Ever throughout June and July 2019.

Closer Than Ever is a nonstop exploration of everyday struggles in the “modern world.” Topics ranging from unrequited adoration to aging to Muzak.

“Each song is a unique story told by a new character, taking audiences, not only into the songbook of Mr. Maltby and Mr. Shire, but into the minds of the individuals facing these completely relatable challenges,” EPCC officials shared via a news release.

Closer than Ever is a musical revue in two acts with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. and music by David Shire Schwartz.

Maltby and Shire were honored with a music-and-lyrics Outer Critics Circle Award for Closer than Ever and are the authors of well-regarded, fan-favorite shows like Big and Baby.

This production is directed by Greg Thompson.

Ticket prices are:

  • General Admission-$15
  • EPCC students, staff and faculty, children, military and seniors -$8

Performances will be held June 27, 28, 29 and July 5 and 6 at 8:00 p.m. and June 30, July 6 and 7 at 2:00 p.m. The EPCC Theater Ensemble performs at the EPCC Transmountain Campus Forum Theater, 9570 Gateway North.

EPCC Theater Presents ‘Once on This Island’

El Paso Community College (EPCC) Theater Ensemble will offer its final play of the Summer season with Once on This Island.

Once on This Island is the tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. When their divided cultures keep them apart, Ti Moune is guided by powerful island gods on a remarkable quest to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.

The play is adapted from the book by Lynn Ahrens. Lyrics were written by Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty and directed by EPCC Instructor, Keith Townsend.

The EPCC Performance Studies Program is a multi-disciplinary area composed of students from the fields of Theatre Performance & Production, Speech, Music, Dance, Communications and other behavioral sciences, said Keith Townsend.

“The ultimate goal is to give students the opportunity to build a varied and comprehensive performance, so that when they leave EPCC they can continue their work in Performance Studies at a university of their choice.”

Performances will be held August 24, 25, 26, 31, September 1 and 2 at 8:00 p.m. and August 27 and September 3 at  2:30 p.m. The EPCC Theater Ensemble performs at the EPCC Transmountain Campus Forum Theater, 9570 Gateway North.

Ticket prices are:

  • General Admission-$15
  • Non-EPCC students and military-$10
  • EPCC students/staff and senior citizens-$7

Tickets are available at the door. The box office opens two hours before each performance.
