Video+Story: El Paso Fire Crews Battle South-Central Blaze Sunday Morning

It was a hot morning for El Paso’s Bravest, as crews donned their gear for a late-breakfast battle against a large, smokey fire near Washington Park.

El Paso Fire Department (EPFD) officials said crews were dispatched shortly after 9 a.m. to the 4200 block of Alameda Avenue, after a 911 call reporting a business fire.

Upon arrival, crews from Pumper 13 began fighting the fire; and additional units were requested to the scene. After a primary search of the business, no occupants were found.

A total of 18 units and 42 firefighters responded to the incident. Texas Gas, El Paso Electric and the El Paso Police Department assisted at the scene.

EPFD Officials said that the fire did not extend to other structures, however two nearby houses were evacuated as a safety measure. No injuries reported at this time.

Via a news release, officials added, “The El Paso Fire Department would like to remind the general public that the Fire Prevention Division provides free smoke alarms. An early warning from a smoke alarm can provide valuable time to evacuate during a fire situation. To sign up for the program, please dial 3-1-1 or visit our website“.

Estimated damage cost and cause of the fire are, at this time, pending investigation.

El Paso FD to Host Hands-Only CPR Event Saturday

In conjunction with three schools of the Ysleta Independent School District and the El Paso Masonic Family, the El Paso Fire Department will be teaching hands-only CPR to the public on Saturday Aug. 20 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge Hall parking lot located at 1808 Hunter Dr.

“We wanted to help the community near our lodge,” said Lt. Divenus Parker. “We do numerous events throughout the year throughout the city, but this is the first in our neighborhood.”

Additionally, the Masonic Family will be giving free basic school supplies to needy families in the Del Norte Elementary, Hacienda Heights Elementary and Bel Air Middle populations.

There will also be free food, drinks, music, games, jumping balloons, a voter registration booth and a fire truck display.

Families are encouraged to bring their school supply list to assist with the process.

El Paso Fire Department, Dept of Health Announce May Dates for ‘Vaccinations for Health’

The program “Vaccinations for Health” that teams up the El Paso Fire Department with the El Paso Health Department to provide free influenza and pneumonia vaccines, blood pressure and glucose screenings and colorectal screening kits will start again in May at the following dates and locations.

“This flu season started later than usual, but with lots of momentum and severity,” says Robert Resendes, Health Department Director. “As such, it’s still both prudent and timely to be immunized against this flu season’s viruses. This season’s vaccine has proven to be effective against the predominant strains.”

Remember that the service is FREE to residents of El Paso and Hudspeth County who are 18 and over and do not have medical insurance or are on Medicaid. We are encouraging residents who meet these guidelines to take advantage of the program. The goal of the program is to increase the wellness of our community who do not have access to these services.
