Over the weekend, El Paso Locomotive FC and San Antonio FC fought to a draw in a preseason match in the Alamo City.
This budding Texas rivalry planted its early seeds. In a modified preseason format, the match consisted of a 45-minute period, a 30-minute period, and another 45-minute “mini game.”
This restructured format, especially in regard to the mini game, let El Paso Locomotive FC get the entirety of the squad on board. “All the guys got good minutes tonight and experience, which is important moving forward,” Said Head Coach Mark Lowry.
El Paso Locomotive came out swinging and looked to maintain and implement the high possession gameplay they exhibited this preseason.
With a few good looks on frame in the first half, one of the closest opportunities came off a bicycle kick by defender James Kiffe that kissed the cross bar. El Paso showed creativity in their attack and most importantly showed strength in their defense. Goalkeeper Logan Ketterer stepped up and showcased his pedigree, coming up with four massive saves to keep the sheet clean.
After 45 minutes, the sides remained scoreless and moved to the next period of play, scheduled for 30 minutes. In both halves, each side of the field saw action, with EP Locomotive and San Antonio FC fighting for the chance to take the lead.
After the final whistle, the game moved into what was labeled, a “mini game” that lasted 45 minutes and saw members of the Locomotive squad that shared common threads. The three local players, forward Omar Salgado, and midfielders Louis “Chapa” Herrera and Memo Diaz all saw the pitch together under the lights of Toyota Field.
“I am very happy with how the team competed, it was a great exercise for both teams and I am very pleased with how our team has progressed,” said Lowry after the 0-0 draw against Western Conference foe San Antonio FC.
El Paso Locomotive will play one final preseason match against OKC Energy FC in Tucson, Arizona on March 2nd.

On Thursday, El Paso Locomotive FC officials announced the signing of local talent, midfielder Guillermo “Memo” Diaz.
Diaz was born and raised in Gadsden, New Mexico and played his youth soccer career in El Paso. He attended Gadsden High School, and while playing for the Panthers, was named the 2013-14 Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year after scoring 73 points off 27 goals and 19 assists.
“When I got into the office and was offered a contract I felt very thankful to the club and to coach Mark Lowry for giving me this amazing opportunity,” said Diaz. “Getting to play for the professional team in your hometown is every kid’s dream.”
Diaz attended Yavapai Junior College in Arizona where he was a member of the highly competitive Roughriders soccer team. He was an NSCAA and NJCAA All-Region selection and helped the Roughriders to a top-five national finish.
Diaz then transferred to UNLV for his final two years of eligibility for the 2016 and 2017 season. In the 2016 season, Diaz started in 22 matches and was fifth in scoring for the UNLV Rebels. Diaz also spent time in the National Pro Soccer League with Laredo Heat, where he piqued the interest of the Locomotive coaching staff.
He received an offer to participate in the invitational tryout and was extended an opportunity to train with the team during preseason. Diaz impressed the coaching staff during training and in matches during the preseason schedule.
Diaz is now the second trialist to receive an offer in preseason along with English goalkeeper Jermaine Fordah. He is the third local player to make the Locomotive squad, joining forward Omar Salgado and midfielder Louis “Chapa” Herrera.

El Paso Locomotive FC and FC Juarez competed in a friendly match yesterday at Estadio Olimpico Benito Juarez.
The match served as a test for both sides, with El Paso Locomotive inching closer to the start of their historic inaugural season and the Bravos fielding a team of U-23 and first team players.
From the moments before the match started to the final whistle, a sense of unity and connection hung heavy in the stadium.
High-possession and creativity in their passing led to the first goal of the match for El Paso Locomotive FC. Left-back James Kiffe netted a goal in the 24th minute after receiving a pinpoint pass from midfielder Calvin Rezende.
The Bravos tied the match in the 37th minute with a shot by Aaron Gomez to bring score level going into half time. After a foul on the edge of the box, center midfielder Sebastian Contreras stepped up to take a free kick in the 66th minute. Contreras placed it just over the wall and tucked it neatly underneath the crossbar to put Locomotive up 1.
El Paso was able to hold onto the lead through heavy possession and the ability to play the ball out of the back. Contreras stepped up once again in the 80th minute with a cross into the box that resulted in a thundering header from forward Omar Salgado into the back of the net.
After the final whistle, the score was El Paso Locomotive FC 3 and FC Juarez 1.
“This game was exactly what we wanted and expected from a Mark Lowry coached team, heavy possession and passing with a purpose,” said General Manager, Business Operations Andrew Forrest. “To see the maturation of the team to reflect Mark’s style is incredible in just a few short weeks. Mark was not lying when he said we would play entertaining, possession-based football and to see it on full display was encouraging and something fans will not want to miss out on March 9th at Southwest University Park.”

“As a defender, he has great 1v1 defending abilities, is good in the air and is a fantastic athlete. Officials with El Paso Locomotive FC announced Friday morning the signing of 6’ 3” goalkeeper Logan Ketterer for the 2019 season, pending league and federation approval.
“He has spent the last couple of years working closely with Zack Steffen, the number one national team keeper,” said Head Coach Mark Lowry. “He will be coming to us with a great foundation, a willingness to be brave with the ball at his feet, and a desire to win games and be a leader in the group.”
The Madison, Wisconsin native comes to El Paso from the Columbus Crew SC, who play in the MLS, where he spent two seasons and was a fourth-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft.
He made his first appearance for the Crew against Chicago Fire on June 6, 2018.
Bringing Ketterer to El Paso aligns perfectly with the high-possession game Lowry is implementing in the 2019 inaugural season. “Logan is a goalkeeper that is coming from an MLS environment that played in a similar manner to us and used the goalkeepers as a big part of their possession game,” said Lowry.
“The goalkeeper position is a critical element to how we want to play. Not just with the obvious objectives of making saves and keeping clean sheets, but more-so with how we want to build our possession and bravery to play slightly higher up the field,” said Lowry.

“I want to thank the ownership and upper management at El Paso Locomotive FC for helping me bring in an individual of this caliber. Big thanks to Richie and his agent for making the process a smooth one,” said Lowry.

In 2017, Rebellon joined Jacksonville Armada (21 appearances), the former club of El Paso Locomotive Head Coach, Mark Lowry and teammates, Derek Gebhard, Joshua Castellanos and Yuma.
After a year stint in Jacksonville, Rebellon joined Swope Park Rangers of the USL Championship for the 2018 season and appeared in 26 matches.

Herrera piqued the interest of the Locomotive coaching staff during the 2018 Alianza de Futbol tournament in El Paso, where he competed with an all-star team comprised of former professionals and collegiate players.
“We saw him play at the Alianza tournament in September, where I think he ran 5,000 miles and didn’t give the ball away once all weekend,” said head coach Mark Lowry. “We invited him to tryouts where he performed well and once again showed his quality and potential.”
After a successful two days at the December 1 and 2 open tryouts, Herrera received a spot to attend the invitational tryout on December 8 and 9 where he continued to impress the staff.
A few weeks after the invitational tryout, Herrera came to the El Paso Locomotive offices with his family and was offered a contract for the inaugural 2019 season.
Lowry said, “In my years of doing this, I can honestly say it was one of my proudest moments sitting with Louis and his family while he signed forms to become a full-time professional soccer player.”
“At 22, he has incredible room for growth and the opportunity to change the lives of him and his family. This is what dreams are made of. Last week he was working construction, today he signed a professional contract,” said Lowry. “I am honored to be part of this journey with Louis and everyone else in El Paso who aspires to be something special”
