Environmental Services Offers Tips on Recycling During Game Time Sunday

Ahead of Super Bowl Sunday, the Environmental Services Department (ESD) encourages residents to make a game-time decision to go green and recycle.

“If we can remember to rinse and recycle plastic bottles and aluminum beverage containers, we will be diverting waste from the landfill. We need to prevent contamination in the blue bin by keeping items that are not recyclable out, such as food and glass,” said Director of Environmental Services Ellen Smyth.

Football game gatherings can create large amounts of trash that end up at the Greater El Paso Landfill.

The ESD estimates that thousands of aluminum cans, plastic bottles and cardboard material will pass the recycle bin and land in the trash Super Bowl Sunday.

Below are a few tips the ESD wants residents to remember when it comes to recycling.

  • Set aside separate containers for trash and recycling. Aluminum cans, plastic bottles and cardboard packaged products are recyclable.
  • Pizza boxes and Styrofoam cups and plates are NOT RECYCLABLE; those belong in the trash.
  • Purchase aluminum canned beverages; glass is not recyclable in the blue bins.
  • Serve food on reusable plates that can be washed and used again. This can reduce the amount of trash that may end up in the landfill.

The Environmental Services Department encourages all residents to recycle right, not just for Super Bowl weekend but all year-round. To learn more about recycling visit the Recycle Right El Paso webpage.
