This summer promises hard-hitting, non-stop action in a local battle royale for our city and the title of ‘Best in the Borderland’ when it comes to Rugby 7s.
With multiple Men’s Rugby teams from El Paso and Juarez, rugby is swiftly gaining steam in the Borderplex, and the Sun City 7’s are a way to see who’s the best around. These are friendly matches, but there’s nothing cordial about it.
In rugby, camaraderie is built with every crushing blow and respect is earned.
Rugby 7’s differ from the standard rugby match (where 15 to a side play) as noted by the 7’s – meaning 7 players to a side, on a smaller field.
Located at McArthur Park (738 Gerald Drive), the second tournament of the summer begins this Saturday morning @ 10am. Food and Beverage coolers are allowed, as are folding chairs.

The El Paso Scorpions, the Sun City’s very own rugby club, will be hosting a Black vs Gold scrimmage that will be open to the public this Saturday, February 17.
This inter-squad Scorpion scrimmage will serve as a tune-up, as the team prepares for their final matches and the upcoming playoffs. The game also allows for some of the newer members to adjust to their teammates and get a feel for full-speed rugby.
In addition to players from throughout the city, the squad has several new players from Fort Bliss.
Team officials say, “With the new additions to the team, often there are 30 participants at practice, even when the temperature drops below freezing…this dedication shows why the Scorpions have yet to lose a match this season.”
“This event will be a fun way for the residents of El Paso to get together and recognize the talent of the club, as they have qualified for the regional championships that are set to take place in Albuquerque on April 21 and 22,” team officials added.
The remaining home games, as well as the inner-club scrimmage, will take place at Thorn Park on 5300 Mace Street in El Paso. Below is a list of upcoming Scorpion matches:
February 17: Black vs. Gold scrimmage at Thorn Park at 2:00 PM
March 10: vs. Albuquerque Aardvarks at Thorn Park at 2:00 PM
March 17: vs. Albuquerque Brujos at Thorn Park at 2:00 PM
April 7: vs. Santa Fe Santos at Santa Fe at 2:00 PM
April 21-22: Regional Championships in Albuquerque

Over 40 years of rugby history and tradition continue this weekend as the El Paso Scorpions celebrate the start of their 2017-18 season.
Officials with the team remind fans that “the games are free, and they can bring your chairs, coolers and anything else you want and enjoy some great rugby…the Scorpions would really appreciate all the support as we look to kick off another excellent year!”
Via their facebook page, the Scorpions promise “80 minutes of no timeouts, no pads, just fast paced, hard hitting, grown-man sport action!”
Earlier this month, the Scorpions had tune-up matches vs Las Cruces, Abq and Santa Fe, setting the stage for Game 1 of the 2017- 18 season.
The El Paso Scorpions are part of the El Paso Youth Rugby Foundation (EPYRF) which is a Non-Profit Organization. The Scorpions RFC has had a legacy of being a dominate team in the Rio Grande Union, and hope to repeat their performance this year.
