Streetcar Work Continues on Kansas St; Pedestrians Reminded about Crosswalks

The Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority is reminding Downtown pedestrians to cross the Kansas Street work zone only at designated crosswalks as rail work continues there.

Crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks have kept existing crosswalks open or placed temporary crosswalks at the following locations along Kansas Street:

  • South side of Main Drive
  • South side of Texas Avenue
  • North side of Myrtle Avenue
  • South side of Overland Avenue

The above list is subject to change as construction advances along Kansas Street in the coming months.

Kansas Street remains reduced to a single southbound lane between Franklin Avenue and Overland. Main Drive, Mills Avenue and San Antonio Avenue remain closed to thru traffic between Stanton and Kansas Street

In the coming weeks, this work zone will extend south along Kansas Street to Paisano Drive.

In advance of underground utility relocation work there, lane widths will be reduced on Glory Road between Mesa Street and Oregon Street from Tuesday, October 18, to Friday, October 21, 2016.

To accommodate underground utility work there, Santa Fe Street will be closed between 8 pm and 4 am on Monday, October 17, and Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

To allow track work to advance along Father Rham Avenue, El Paso Street and Stanton Street will be temporarily closed at Father Rahm Avenue from 2 am to 5 am on Sunday, October 16, and from 2 am to 5 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

Lane restrictions at those locations will resume following this work.

Major Streetcar Work to Start after Memorial Day; Many Downtown Street Closures

The route you use to leave Downtown El Paso could be blocked by construction beginning the week after Memorial Day.

As part of the El Paso Streetcar Project, contractors are relocating underground utilities along Stanton Street. This work requires a series of street closures beginning on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

The first step includes a complete closure of Franklin Avenue east of Stanton Street. Also at this time, Stanton Street will be reduced to one lane at Franklin. These Closures will last for approximately two weeks.

If you usually pass through the Franklin/Stanton intersection to access Interstate 10 eastbound, consider using Wyoming Avenue as an alternate route.

When that work is complete, Stanton Street will be completely closed between Franklin Avenue and Missouri Avenue. Franklin Avenue will be reduced to one lane. These closures will last for about a month.

Also beginning during the week of May 30, 2016, Stanton Street will closed to thru traffic between Kerbey Avenue and Blanchard Avenue.

University Avenue will close to thru traffic between Kansas Street and Mesa Street.

Stanton Street will remain closed to thru traffic between Blacker Avenue and Rim Road. Hague Road will remain closed to thru traffic between Kansas Street and Mesa Street.

These closures are necessary as crews relocate utility lines. As work is completed, closures will move north into other intersections along Stanton Street including Boston and Baltimore.

Santa Fe Street remains reduced to one lane in each direction between Franklin Avenue and San Antonio Avenue. Main Drive remains closed to thru traffic at Santa Fe. Additionally, intermittent lane closures continue on Santa Fe Street between Loop 375 and Paisano Drive.

Kansas Street remains closed between Paisano Drive and Father Rahm Avenue. East-west cross streets are also closed at Kansas Street. Meanwhile, Father Rahm Avenue remains closed to traffic between Santa Fe Street and Kansas Street. North-south cross streets remain open.
