First of Six PCC Trolleys Headed Back to El Paso

After being mothballed for more than four decades, undergoing two years of extensive renovation, and making a 3,600 mile round trip to the Keystone State, the very first of El Paso’s vintage streetcars is scheduled to be back in the Sun City next week, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

Because of weather, traffic and other unpredictable variables outside of its control, a day-by-day itinerary for Car No. 1506’s travel is unavailable.

Once the streetcar arrives in El Paso, it will be unloaded and transported immediately into the Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) at 601 South Santa Fe Street for inspection by the CRRMA and Sun Metro.

Officials add that members of the public will not be able to access the streetcar upon its arrival. The CRRMA and the City of El Paso will soon announce public events to celebrate the streetcar’s homecoming.

Car No. 1506, part of the fleet of streetcars which ran in El Paso until 1974, is the first of six vintage Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) streetcars to be refurbished and modernized as part of the $97 million El Paso Streetcar Project

El Paso’s fleet of six historic PCC streetcars left El Paso on November 12 and December 10, 2015, bound for extensive renovation by Brookville Equipment Corporation in Brookville, Pa.

Each of the six streetcars will be painted in one of three vintage color schemes from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Car No. 1506 is painted in the red and green 1970s color pattern.

The return of the first streetcar will allow the CRRMA to begin a rigorous, months-long testing phase to ensure the system is safe before Sun Metro begins operating the service for the public. In the coming weeks, you’ll see streetcars running along the 4.8 mile route but you won’t be able to board. An exact date for the beginning of on-street testing has not been announced.

Below are some important tips to remember as we welcome the first streetcar back to El Paso:

  • Other than traveling on a fixed route, the streetcars will operate much like other vehicles. They will have a maximum speed of approximately 25 miles per hour, obeying all traffic laws and — in most cases — they will travel with other vehicles in a travel lane.
  • The Streetcar is powered by lines running above the street which carry 650 DC volts of electricity. Always consider every line to be fully energized. Never touch the wires or anything touching the wires.
  • Don’t ride your bike along the rails your tire can get stuck between the rail and the pavement. When you cross the rails, do so at a 90-degree angle.
  • Pedestrians should also use extra caution when crossing the rails or walking near the streetcar line.

Two-Day Lane Restrictions Set For Mesa-Glory Road-Baltimore Intersection

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists will encounter lane restrictions for approximately 48 hours days during the week of November 6 as crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks complete final paving of the intersection of Mesa Street, Glory Road and Baltimore Drive.

PHASE I: Beginning at 9pm on Monday, November 6, 2017 and lasting approximately 24 hours, northbound and southbound traffic on Mesa Street will be reduced to a single outside lane in each direction.

Baltimore and Glory closed to thru traffic at Mesa. Only right turns will be permitted to and from Mesa Street, Glory Road and Baltimore Drive.

PHASE II: Upon completion of that phase, northbound and southbound traffic on Mesa Street will be switched to a single inside lane in each direction for approximately 24 hours.

Turns to and from Mesa Street, Glory Road and Baltimore Drive will not be permitted.

This final paving work will yield a smoother, permanent surface for motorists on Mesa Street as they cross the rails which were recently installed on Glory Road and Baltimore Drive as part of the El Paso Streetcar Project.

Video+Story: Striping set Soon for Stanton Street

Stanton Street will look dramatically different in the coming weeks, as crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks begin final striping work there which includes the final striping for the railway, roadway, and the installation of the region’s first-ever two-way protected bikeway.

The designs for Stanton Street’s new railway, roadway and bikeway were initially presented to members of the public at open houses held at Cathedral High School and the Don Haskins Center.

The bikeway, which is being installed as part of the El Paso Streetcar Project, will accommodate north-south bike traffic along the eastern side of Stanton Street between Arizona Avenue and Baltimore Drive.

It will include special signs, signals, pavement markings and delineators for cyclists.

To accommodate this work, beginning on Monday, October 16, 2017, parking will not be permitted on the eastern curb of Stanton Street between Arizona and Baltimore. In addition to delivering bilingual fliers door-to-door, signs and other markings will be in place to ensure motorists are aware of the parking regulations.

“The CRRMA exists to benefit the traveling public within the El Paso region through the development of additional transportation alternatives, including options like the El Paso Streetcar Project and the new bikeway along Stanton Street,” said CRRMA Executive Director Raymond Telles.

“As the placement of the tracks and bikeway are new additions to the area, we encourage motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to use extra caution traveling along Stanton Street in the coming weeks as we all get used the street’s new layout.”

While cyclists may be eager to use the bikeway as soon as the first markings go up, the CRRMA is also asking cyclists to refrain from using the bikeway until it is complete and officially open to the public.

The two-way protected bike lane being installed on Stanton Street is an innovative solution developed by the CRRMA and City of El Paso, which helps the City in its effort to achieve the goals established in its Comprehensive Bike Plan.

Streetcar Work Continues, Final Seal to be Placed on Stanton, Oregon Overpasses

Some motorists, pedestrians and cyclists will need to find alternate routes across Interstate 10 in Downtown El Paso as crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks place a final layer of sealant on two overpasses which were recently re-surfaced and outfitted with rails as part of the El Paso Streetcar Project.

To accommodate the work, Stanton Street and Oregon Street are scheduled to be closed to all traffic between Yandell Drive and Wyoming Avenue beginning at approximately 9am on Wednesday, September 20, 2017.

Both overpasses are scheduled to re-open on Friday, September 22, 2017, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority which is managing construction of the 4.8 mile streetcar project which will run from South El Paso to Downtown to the UTEP area.

Campbell Street, Kansas Street, Mesa Street, El Paso Street and Santa Fe Street will remain open to north-south traffic over I-10 during this closure.

Streetcar Work Continues on Stanton, Crews Begin Final Push Toward Completion

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should anticipate new temporary traffic patterns in the coming days as rail work related to the El Paso Streetcar Projects continues to advance toward its conclusion, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

Beginning during the week of July 31, 2017two-way traffic on Stanton Street between Yandell Drive and Schuster Avenue will shift from the west side of the street to the east side of the street.

With the exception of Nevada Avenue, all cross streets are open at Stanton.

Also during this time, crews will begin preliminary striping work on North Stanton Street in advance of final striping related to the El Paso Streetcar Project which is scheduled to begin the week of August 7, 2017.

Traffic Impacts at Other Locations

The following traffic impacts will remain in place during the week of July 31, 2017:

Streetcar Work Means New Temporary Traffic Patterns on Mesa, Stanton Streets

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should anticipate new temporary traffic patterns in the coming days as rail work related to the El Paso Streetcar Projects continues to advance toward its conclusion, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

Beginning on Tuesday, July 25, 2017traffic on Mesa Street will shift from the inside lanes to the outside lanes at the intersection with Glory Road/Baltimore Drive. Crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks have completed the first two phases of rail work in the intersection.

Traffic will remain reduced to a single lane in each direction through late August.

Baltimore Drive remains closed to thru traffic between Stanton Street and Mesa Street while Glory Road remains closed to thru traffic between Mesa Street and Oregon Street.

Motorists seeking the access the Glory Road Parking Garage can continue to do so via Oregon Street. Pedestrians are encouraged to cross Mesa Street at Cincinnati Street or at the crosswalk adjacent to the Don Haskins Center.

 

Beginning during the week of July 31, 2017two-way traffic on Stanton Street between Yandell Drive and Schuster Avenue will shift from the west side of the street to the east side of the street. With the exception of Nevada Avenue, all cross streets are open at Stanton.

Trolley Work Shifts Again: Mesa Lane Closures; Stanton, Santa Fe Reopen to Traffic

Two important north-south thoroughfares will re-open to two-way traffic by the end of this week, while lane restrictions will expand on Mesa Street as work at Glory Road/Baltimore Drive continues next week, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

Beginning at 6 am on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, Mesa Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction at Glory Road/Baltimore Drive as work there enters Phase II.

In this phase, which lasts approximately three weeks, traffic will flow in a single inside lane in each direction. During Phase III, which lasts approximately four weeks, traffic will flow in a single outside lane in each direction.

During Phases II and III, Glory Road will remain closed to thru traffic between Oregon Street and Mesa Street while Baltimore Drive will remain closed to thru traffic between Mesa Street and Stanton Street.

These plans have been developed in coordination with the City of El Paso, Sun Metro, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the University of Texas at El Paso. While traffic will be allowed to flow in both directions on Mesa Street, motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes such as Stanton Street and Sun Bowl Drive.

Motorists will be able to access the Glory Road Transfer Center parking garage from Glory Road via Oregon Street. Pedestrian who usually cross Mesa at Baltimore/Glory, should consider alternate crossing locations.

While traffic will remain open to north-south traffic on Mesa, thru traffic should consider alternate routes such as Sun Bowl Drive and Stanton Street.

 

Stanton Street will re-open to two-way traffic between Schuster Avenue and Yandell Drive by Friday, June 30, 2017. Because work will continue on Stanton Street, two-way traffic will travel on the western side of the street between Montana Avenue and Schuster Avenue.

Between Schuster Avenue and Cincinnati Avenue, northbound traffic will travel on the easternmost side of the street while southbound traffic will travel on the westernmost side.

Santa Fe Street will re-open to at least one lane in each direction between Paisano Drive and Father Rahm Avenue by Friday, June 30, 2017. Also at this time, 4th Avenue will re-open to two-way traffic between El Paso Street and Santa Fe Street.

As work continues on the Maintenance and Storage Facility, a southbound lane restriction will remain in place on Santa Fe Street near Sun Metro’s Bert Williams Downtown Transfer Center.

 

The following traffic impacts will remain in place during the week of July 5, 2017:

Final Rail Work for El Paso Streetcar Project gets Underway Starting Monday

After months of rail work at locations from South El Paso to Downtown to the UTEP area, crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks will begin their final wave of rail work in the coming weeks in the following three areas:

AREA 1 — Mesa Street at Glory Road/Baltimore Drive

Beginning on Monday, June 19, 2017, crews will begin work to lay rail across Mesa Street at Glory Road/Baltimore Drive. To keep traffic moving, the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority has announced the following three phases of work to build rail across Mesa Street at the intersection of Glory Road/Baltimore Drive:

  • Phase I will run through the week of July 5, 2017: Glory Road will be closed between Oregon Street and Mesa Street; Baltimore Drive will be closed to between Mesa Street and Stanton Street. Crews will complete rail approaching Mesa Street on both Glory and Baltimore. Turn lanes from Mesa onto both of those streets will be closed.
  • Phase II will begin the week of July 5, 2017 and last approximately three weeks: Mesa Street will be reduced to a single inside lane in each direction as crews begin laying rail toward the center of the intersection.
  • Phase III will begin immediately after Phase II is completed and last approximately four weeks: Mesa Street will be reduced to a single outside lane in each direction as crews join the two sections of rail placed in Phase II. Baltimore will be open to local traffic only from Stanton Street.

These plans have been developed in coordination with the City of El Paso, Sun Metro, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the University of Texas at El Paso. While traffic will be allowed to flow in both directions on Mesa Street, motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes such as Stanton Street and Sun Bowl Drive.

AREA 2 — Oregon Street between Wyoming Avenue and Franklin Avenue

Beginning on Monday, June 19, 2017, Oregon Street will close to thru traffic between Franklin Avenue and Wyoming Avenue to accommodate track work. Cross streets will remain open but will be subject to lane restrictions. Work is scheduled to take approximately eight to ten weeks to complete.

AREA 3 — Stanton Street between Wyoming Avenue and Franklin Avenue

Beginning on Monday, June 26, 2017, Stanton Street will close to thru traffic between Franklin Avenue and Wyoming Avenue to accommodate trackwork. Cross streets will remain open but will be subject to lane restrictions. Work is scheduled to take approximately eight to ten weeks to complete.

When rail work is completed, crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks will continue other work along the route including sidewalk repairs, pole placement for the overhead cantenary system which will power the streetcars, and striping operations.

Traffic Impacts at Other Locations

The following traffic impacts will remain in place during the week of June 19, 2017:

Complete Closures

  • Santa Fe Street between Father Rahm Avenue and 3rd Avenue
  • Santa Fe Street between 3rd Avenue and Paisano Drive (open to northbound traffic only)
  • 4th Avenue between El Paso Street and Santa Fe Street
  • Stanton Street between Wyoming Avenue and Yandell Drive
  • Oregon Street between Wyoming Avenue and Yandell Drive
  • Stanton Street between Yandell Drive and Schuster Avenue (open to northbound traffic only)

Lane Restrictions

  • El Paso Street at 4th Avenue
  • Oregon Street between Nevada Avenue and Yandell Drive
  • Yandell Drive between Kansas Street and Santa Fe Street
  • Oregon Street between Kansas Street and Santa Fe Street

In the coming weeks, crews will be working intermittently at locations throughout the downtown loop — which comprises Kansas Street, Father Rahm Avenue, Santa Fe Street and Franklin Avenue — to finalize some paving work and signal work.

That work will require short-term lane restrictions to complete. Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use extra caution and obey all posted signs and barricades.

To keep traffic moving, the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority has announced the following three phases of work to build rail across Mesa Street at the intersection of Glory Road/Baltimore Drive:

Contractors will present detailed plans, traffic control maps and information on alternate routes.

Maps+Story: Trolley Work Means New Traffic Patterns to Help Downtown Commuters

Downtown commuters will have a little more room to move starting next week as crews lift as new traffic patterns in place on Franklin Avenue and lane restrictions continue to east on Kansas Street, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

  • Beginning on Monday, May 8, 2017, Franklin Avenue will re-open to east-west traffic between Santa Fe Street and Oregon Street near Southwest University Park, eastbound traffic on Franklin Avenue between Oregon Street and Kansas Street will move to the south side of the street, and left turns will once again be allowed from Mesa Street onto Franklin Avenue.
  • Also at this time, Stanton Street will re-open to northbound traffic between Main Drive and Franklin Avenue. Stanton will close to thru traffic between Franklin Avenue and Missouri Avenue for three weeks as crews begin rail work there.
  • By the end of the week of May 8, Kansas Street will re-open to all southbound lanes traffic between Franklin Avenue and Father Rahm Avenue. A single lane restriction will remain in place on Kansas at Franklin.

These changes will make it easier for motorists to navigate around lane restrictions on Wyoming Avenue and Yandell Drive and the complete closures of Oregon Street and Stanton Street at Interstate 10.

Earlier, Stanton Street and Oregon Street closed to all traffic between Yandell Drive and Wyoming Avenue to accommodate the placement of rail and specially formulated concrete on overpasses which will carry the streetcar line across I-10.

Overpass closures are scheduled to last approximately eight weeks. Lane restrictions will also be in place on Yandell Drive for approximately eight weeks and on Wyoming Avenue for approximately twelve weeks.

As a result, motorists are asked to consider alternate routes into Downtown including the following:

  • From I-10 west, exit Cotton Street to Texas Avenue
  • Use Loop 375 west to Campbell Street
  • From I-10 east, exit Executive Center to Paisano

Paving Operations Continue on North Stanton Street

North Stanton Street remains reduced to a single northbound lane between Montana Avenue and Cincinnati Avenue as crews continue work repaving the street and begin work on streetcar boarding stations.

This work includes the closure of Boston Avenue between Kansas Street and Stanton Street.

During the week of May 8, 2017, the following streets will be intermittently closed to thru traffic between Stanton Street and Kansas Street as crews pave through the intersections: Boston Avenue, Kerbey Avenue, University Avenue, Hague Avenue.

Stanton Street is scheduled to re-open to north-south traffic between Crosby Avenue and Cincinnati Avenue by the end of May and between Yandell Drive and Crosby Avenue by the end of June.

The following traffic impacts will remain in place during the week of May 8:

Complete Closures

  • Glory Road between Randolph Drive and Mesa Street
  • Oregon Street between Cincinnati Avenue and Glory Road
  • Santa Fe Street between 4th Avenue and Father Rahm Avenue

Lane Restrictions

  • Campbell Street at 1st Avenue

Other Upcoming Work

Track work is set to begin on Glory Road between Oregon and Mesa Street and on Baltimore Drive between Stanton Street and Mesa Street in mid-June. This work will set the stage for rail to cross Mesa Street at Glory Road/Baltimore Drive in July.

Beginning on May 22, 2017, lane restrictions will be in place on South El Paso Street at 4th Avenue as crews complete storm drain work there. Also at that time, crews will close the intersection of Santa Fe Street and 4th Avenue to fully reconstruct the intersection.

Stanton, Oregon I-10 Overpasses to Close Monday for Streetcar Rail Work

Commuters coming into and leaving from Downtown El Paso are encouraged to consider alternate routes beginning next week as crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks begin laying key portions of rail for the El Paso Streetcar Project.

Stanton Street and Oregon Street will close to all traffic between Yandell Drive and Wyoming Avenue in Downtown El Paso on Monday, May 1, 2017, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

Simultaneous closures are necessary to accommodate the placement of rail and specially formulated concrete on overpasses which will carry the streetcar line across Interstate 10.

Lane restrictions will also be in place on Yandell Drive and Wyoming Avenue at that time. This work is scheduled to take approximately eight weeks to complete.

Morning Detour Routes into Downtown El Paso

To avoid this work zone and other streetcar work zones, motorists should consider the following alternate routes into Downtown El Paso:

From West El Paso and Upper Valley

  • I-10 Exit 16/Executive Center Boulevard to Paisano Drive into Downtown.
  • I-10 Exit 18B/Franklin Avenue to Durango Street
  • I-10 Exit 19/Downtown, turn right on Santa Fe Street to

From East El Paso, Central El Paso and Mission Valley

  • I-10 Exit 20/Cotton Street south to Texas Avenue

Evening Detour Routes out of Downtown El Paso

To avoid this work zone and other streetcar work zones, motorists should consider the following alternate routes out of Downtown El Paso:

To West El Paso and Upper Valley

While North Stanton Street remains reduced to a single northbound lane between Yandell Drive and Cincinnati Avenue, beginning on Monday, May 1, 2017, northbound traffic will be moved from the east side of the street to the west side of the street between Montana Avenue and Rim Road. Northbound traffic between Rim Road and Cincinnati Avenue was moved to the west side of the street on April 24.

These changes in traffic pattern is necessary to give crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks room to safely construct boarding platforms and complete paving along Stanton Street.

All cross-streets between Schuster Avenue and Cincinnati Avenue have re-opened at Stanton Street. Meanwhile, Hague Road, Crosby Avenue and Rio Grande Avenue remain closed to thru traffic immediately west of Stanton. Intermittent closures of cross-streets will continue as rolling paving operations continue along some parts of Stanton Street.

Stanton Street is scheduled to re-open to north-south traffic between Crosby Avenue and Cincinnati Avenue by the end of May and between Yandell Drive and Crosby Avenue by the end of June.

Trolley Work Means New Traffic Patterns on Stanton Street

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should use extra caution in the coming days as a new temporary traffic pattern is now in place on North Stanton Street as part of the El Paso Streetcar Project, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

While North Stanton Street remains reduced to a single northbound lane between Yandell Drive and Cincinnati Avenue, northbound traffic has moved from the east side of the street to the west side of the street between Rim Road and Cincinnati Avenue. This change in traffic pattern is necessary to give crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks room to safely construct boarding platforms and complete paving along Stanton Street.

All cross-streets between Schuster Avenue and Cincinnati Avenue have re-opened at Stanton Street. Meanwhile, Hague Road, Crosby Avenue and Rio Grande Avenue remain closed to thru traffic immediately west of Stanton. Intermittent closures of cross-streets will continue as rolling paving operations continue along some parts of Stanton Street.

Stanton Street is scheduled to re-open to north-south traffic between Crosby Avenue and Cincinnati Avenue by the end of May. Baltimore Drive will close again when rail crosses Mesa Street at Glory Road/Baltimore Drive in mid-June.

As crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks complete installation of some of the most complex rail and switching mechanisms along the entire 4.8 mile route along Santa Fe Street, they are turning their attention to the reconstruction of the intersection of 4th Avenue and Santa Fe Street.

The reconstruction will begin in early May and is necessary to withstand the rigors of daily traffic and buses entering Sun Metro’s Burt Williams Downtown Transfer Center.

To accommodate this work, Santa Fe Street will be closed to thru traffic between 3rd Avenue and Father Rahm Avenue. Also at that time, 4th Avenue will be closed between El Paso Street and Santa Fe Street. Lane restrictions will be in place on El Paso Street at 4th Avenue as well.

Because work will be confined to the intersection, both streets will remain open for local access. However, no vehicles will be allowed to pass through the intersection as it is being reconstructed. Temporary pedestrian crossings will also be in place.

The reconstruction of the intersection is scheduled to be completed by the end of May. This is the last work for the El Paso Streetcar Project which will require complete closure of Santa Fe Street.

The following traffic impacts will remain in place during the week of April 23, 2017:

Complete Closures:

  • Glory Road between Randolph Drive and Mesa Street
  • Oregon Street between Cincinnati Avenue and Glory Road
  • Stanton Street between Main Drive and Franklin Avenue
  • Santa Fe Street between 4th Avenue and Father Rahm Avenue

Lane Restrictions:

  • Kansas Street between Missouri Avenue and Main Drive
  • Kansas Street between Texas Avenue and Paisano Drive
  • Oregon Street between Yandell Drive and Nevada Avenue
  • Franklin Avenue between Kansas Street and Santa Fe Street
  • Father Rahm Avenue between Kansas Street and Santa Fe Street

Southbound Traffic set to Shift on Kansas St; Texas, San Antonio to Close for Paving Work

Due to streetcar rail work, downtown commuters should expect new traffic patterns on and around Kansas Street beginning on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

Southbound traffic will be shifted to the newly paved western lanes of Kansas Street between Franklin Avenue and Paisano Drive on Monday. This will allow crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks to repave the eastern lanes on which traffic is presently flowing.

Additionally at that time, Texas Avenue and San Antonio Avenue will close to thru traffic between Campbell Street and Kansas Street so crews can place concrete pavement in the eastern half of the intersections. Traffic on Kansas Street will continue to be allowed through the intersection; southbound traffic will also be allowed to turn right from Kansas onto both streets.

Work is expected to last for approximately four to six weeks.

As was previously announced, work began laying rail earlier this week on Franklin Avenue. As a result, Franklin Avenue is reduced to a single eastbound lane between Oregon Street and Kansas Street. Mesa Street is reduced to one lane in each direction at Franklin.

In order to keep traffic flowing through this intersection, left turns will not be allowed from Mesa onto Franklin. Additionally, Stanton Street is now closed to thru traffic between Main Drive and Franklin Avenue.

Detour Routes into Downtown

As construction ramps up in the Downtown area, the CRRMA recommends motorists consider the following detour routes when entering Downtown from the following areas:

From Central El Paso, Eastside, Northeast El Paso and Mission Valley

  • I-10 Exit 20/Cotton Street to Myrtle Avenue.
  • Loop 375/César Chávez Border Highway, turn right on Campbell Street or Oregon Street.

From West El Paso

  • I-10 Exit 19/Downtown to Oregon Street or Santa Fe Street, turn left on Paisano, turn left on Campbell Street.
  • I-10 Exit 16/Executive Center Boulevard, turn left on Paisano.

Stanton Street remains reduced to a single northbound lane between Yandell Drive and Baltimore Drive as crews continue work laying rail there. The following cross streets remain closed immediately west of Stanton Street: Baltimore Drive, Robinson Avenue, Blanchard Avenue, Hague Road, Crosby Avenue, Cliff Drive and Rio Grande Avenue.

The following temporary modifications will be necessary as crews continue pouring concrete:

  • Kerbey Avenue will be closed at Stanton Street thru Tuesday, February 28, 2017.
  • As an alternate route for east-west traffic, University Avenue will temporarily re-open thru Tuesday, February 28, 2017.
  • Cincinnati Avenue will be closed at Stanton Street from 1am to 9am on Thursday, February 23, 2017.
  • Rim Road will be closed at Stanton Street from 1am to 9am on Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

Overnight lane closures along I-10 through Downtown El Paso have resumed and will take place Sundays through Thursdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Traffic Impacts at Other Locations Along the 4.8 Mile Route (Week of February 27, 2017)

  • Santa Fe Street remains closed between Paisano Drive and Rather Rahm Avenue for track work.
  • Lane restrictions on Father Rahm Avenue between Santa Fe Street and Father Rahm Avenue.

Map+Story: Overnight Lane Closures begin Sunday on Interstate 10

The Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority has coordinated with the Texas Department of Transportation to close one lane of Interstate 10 overnight for the next six weeks.

The lane closures are necesary as subcontractors for Paso del Norte Trackworks reinforce two overpasses which will carry the 4.8 mile streetcar line across the freeway.

Beginning on Sunday, January 29, 2017, the left lane of I-10 will be closed in both directions through Downtown El Paso. The lane closures will begin at 9 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays for approximately six weeks. The lanes will re-open by 5 a.m.each day.

While work will be confined to the columns which support the Oregon Street and Stanton Street overpasses, lane restrictions will begin well in advance of the work zone to provide a safe work environment for crews. Eastbound lane restrictions on I-10 will begin near Schuster Avenue; Westbound lane restrictions on I-10 will begin near Cotton Street.

Crews will also place poles for the Overhead Catenary System (OCS) which will power the streetcars within the median of I-10 at Oregon and Stanton.

Beginning on Monday, January 30, 2017, Stanton Street will be reduced to a single northbound lane from Yandell Drive to Baltimore Drive as crews expand their work installing rail there.

Baltimore Drive, Robinson Avenue, University Avenue, Blanchard Avenue, Blacker Avenue, Hague Road, Crosby Avenue, Cliff Drive, and Rio Grande Avenue will be closed to thru traffic immediately west of Stanton Street.

North of Crosby, work will continue through mid-April; South of Crosby work will continue thru late May or early June.

Crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks continue their 24/7 work schedule laying rail and pouring concrete across Paisano Drive at Kansas Street and Santa Fe Street.

Paisano is scheduled to re-open to east-west traffic through Downtown on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. Kansas Street will re-open to southbound traffic at and Santa Fe Street will re-open to north-south traffic at this time.

As previously announced, Santa Fe Street will remain closed between Paisano Drive and Father Rahm Avenue as rail is laid there.

As work continues throughout the 4.8 mile route, the following traffic impacts will remain in place during the week of January 30, 2017:

Work Zone Changes Planned for February

The following work zone changes will take place next month:

  • Southbound traffic on Kansas Street will shift to the right site of the street as crews resurface the existing travel lanes. San Antonio Avenue and Texas Avenue will close immediately east of Kansas Street to allow crews to complete concrete paving of those intersections.
  • Franklin Avenue will re-open between Santa Fe Street and the mid-block alley between Oregon Street and Mesa Street. Franklin will be reduced to a single eastbound lane between Oregon Street and Kansas Street; Stanton will close to thru traffic at Franklin.
