Opportunity Center Opens Emergency Warming Centers, Winter Item Donations Needed

As the cold front moved into the city, the Opportunity Center for the Homeless emergency shelters were activated as warm stations to help protect individuals from the freezing temperatures.

The warm stations activation is an action based in response to the National Weather Service’s Severe Weather Alert of El Paso County predicted for the region.

Any given night the emergency shelter’s serves close to 200 homeless persons and as low temperatures approach – the center experiences an increase of individuals seeking shelter.

Those in need of assistance can come to the following locations:

Men’s Resource Center, 1208 Myrtle Avenue

Women’s Resource Center, 1221 Myrtle Avenue

The warm temperatures we experienced in recent weeks generated a decline in winter item donations. As the need increase for our services during inclement weather, we are asking the community to donate money or winter items such as: scarfs, gloves and hats, sweatshirts, coats and jackets, blankets, and lip balm.

All donations are tax-deductible and in-kind donations can be drop-off at 1208 Myrtle Avenue.

All the Opportunity Center for the Homeless emergency shelters provide services 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
