EPCC’s Kemboi Wins National Championship; Women’s Team Places 2nd, Men Place 3rd

El Paso Community College (EPCC) women’s team member Everlyn Kemboi finished in first place at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Cross Country Championships.

Kemboi finished with a time of 18 minutes, 17 seconds in the 5K race. Leading the men in 5thplace was Dennis Kiptoo with a time in the 8K race of 25:58.

The Tejanas finished in 2ndplace with three women being named All American. Everlyn Kemboi (1) and Francisca Jabor (5) were named 1stTeam with Feliciana Kiptoo being named 3rdTeam. The 2018 National Champion was Iowa Central Community College.

The Tejanos finished in 3rdplace with three men being named All American. Dennis Kiptoo (5) was named 1stTeam with Gideon Cheplak (7) and Elias Loriposia (9) making 2ndTeam.  The 2018 National Champion was Central Arizona Community College.

The championships were held November 10, 2018 in Garden City, Kansas.

Up next for EPCC is the NJCAA Half Marathon Championship on November 17 in Gulf Shores, AL.

EPCC Cross Country Steady in Current Rankings as National Championship Nears

Both the men’s and women’s El Paso Community College (EPCC) Cross Country teams continue their time atop the national rankings

According to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Poll of November 7, 2018 for Division 1 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) teams, both the Tejanas and Tejanos maintain their their top five rankings.

The Tejanas are ranked second in this week’s poll. This is the fifth week in a row the women are in the number two spot.

The Tejanos are ranked third, the third week in a row at this position.

Both EPCC teams travel to Garden City, Kansas on Saturday, November 10, 2018 for the NJCAA National Championships

EPCC Cross Country Continues Top Five Rankings

El Paso Community College (EPCC) Cross Country teams, men and women, continue their top five rankings in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Poll.

The Tejanas are ranked second in this week’s poll. This is the fourth week in a row the women are in the number two spot.

The Tejanos are ranked third, the second week in a row at this position.

Both teams are coming off championship runs at the NJCAA Region V Championship in Ranger, Texas.

EPCC will travel to Garden City, Kansas on Saturday, November 10, 2018 for the NJCAA National Championships. The poll is for the week of of October 31, 2018 for Division 1 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) teams.

EPCC Men’s, Women’s Cross-Country Teams Dominate Regional Championships

The El Paso Community College men and women’s cross-country teams won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region V Cross Country Championships in Ranger, Texas.

Tejano, Gideon Cheplak (25m:50) in the and Tejana, Everlyn Kemboi (17m:47s) triumphed in the men’s 8K and women’s5K races.
This is the sixth year in a row that the Tejanas women have won the regional championship.

Five runners (1. Everlyn Kemboi, 3.Faith Jemutai, 5. Francisca Jebor, 7. Feliciana Kiptoo, 8. Dorothy Jemutai ) finished in the Top 10 to receive All-Region honors. South Plains College placed second and New Mexico Military Institute women placed third.

Along with the men’s championship, four runners (1. Gideon Cheplak, 2. Elias Loriposia, 4. Dennis Kiptoo, 5. Elvis Chelak ) placed in the Top 10 for All-Region honors.

Ranger College finished in second place and New Mexico Junior College in third.

Up next for the EPCC Cross Country teams is the NJCAA Championship on November 11 in Garden City, Kansas.

EPCC Men Receive Highest Ranking Ever; Teams Continue to Earn National Attention

As the El Paso Community College (EPCC) Cross Country men’s and women’s teams continue their winning ways, coaches and others are beginning to take notice.

Both teams are now in the top five rankings in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Poll of October 17, 2018 for Division 1 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) teams.

The teams are coming off a very successful meet at the University of California Riverside Highlander Invitational. They competed against Division 1, 2 and 3 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) universities.

The Tejanos are ranked third in this week’s poll, the highest ranking in their history. The men finished fifth at the Highlander Invitational with EPCC athlete Gideon Cheplak winning the race.

The women are ranked second for the third poll in a row. The Tejanas placed fourth at the Highlander Invitational.

EPCC Runner wins Cross Country Event in California

El Paso Community College (EPCC) Men’s Cross country team member, Gideon Cheplak won the University of California at Riverside Highlander Invitational on October 13, 2018.

Cheplak’s time for the 8K race was 24m: 24s. Over 250 runners participated in the men’s race from universities and colleges all over the southwest. The Tejanos’ team finished fifth overall.

Everlyn Kemboi, who finished seventh in the 5K race, led the women’s team with a time of 17m: 18s. The Tejanas’ team finished fourth overall.

The EPCC men and women’s teams consistently have been ranked nationally in the top five by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Next on the schedule, EPCC will compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region V Championship at Ranger, Texas on October 27, 2018.

EPCC Women’s Cross Country Team Tops In New Mexico Meet

El Paso Community College (EPCC) Women’s Cross country team finished first at the New Mexico Junior College Invitational in Hobbs, New Mexico. The men’s team took second place at the meet.

This accomplishment comes on the heels of the national ranking of both teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Poll; the women placed second and the men fourth in the ranking.

Individually at the NMJC Invitational, EPCC’s Everlyn Kemboi won the race with a time for the 5K of 14:43. This was the second fastest time in the history of the race.

Leading the men was Dennis Kiptoo who finished second with a t time of 21:40 for the 7K men’s race.

EPCC’s next race will be on October 19 at the UCR Highlander Invitational in Riverside California.

EPCC Cross Country Teams Nationally Ranked

Both of El Paso Community College (EPCC) Cross Country teams – men and women – are ranked at the same time on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Poll.

The women are ranked 2nd and the men 4th, thanks to their performances at the Lori Fitzgerald Open on September 15th, the men finished in 1st place and the women in 2nd place. The best competitors individually were Gideon Cheplak, finishing in 1st place for the men, and Everlyn Kemboi, finishing in 5th place for the women.

“Most important is that they all excel academically,” Felix Hinojosa, EPCC Athletic Director and Cross Country Head Coach said.  “Each team member is a leader and they depend on each other to excel.”

The next competition for the EPCC teams will be the NMJC Cross Country Invitational at Hobbs, NM on September 28th. This will be the next to last race before getting to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) regionals in the last week of October, and national championships in the first two weeks in November.

The teams are looking to repeat last year’s achievements, where the men finished in 2nd place and women in 1st place at the NJCAA regionals.

5-In-A-Row! EPCC Tejanas CrossCountry Win NJCAA Region V Championship Title

LEVELLAND, TX—The El Paso Community College women’s cross country team defended their regional title as they won their fifth consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region V Cross Country Championship title.

The men’s cross country team also did well placing second at the championship.

The Tejanas women’s cross country placed three runners inside the Top 10 to finish with a final team average of 19:05.74 in a 5k run.  New Mexico Junior College placed second and Ranger college women placed third.

The men’s cross country team placed three runners in the top 10 and placed second with an average 26:14:15 in an 8k run.  South Plains College placed first and Ranger College placed third in the men’s division.

For the women, Sophomore All-Conference Shalet Mitei once again showcased as the region’s best with a first-place time of 17:27.80.  Ocean Stevens and Michelle Renteria also earned All –Conference nods.

Michael Kirwa led the men’s team in the 8K race finishing in third place. Sammy Rono finished fourth and Boaz Kipemei finished eleventh. These three were named All-Conference. The Tejanos times are as follows:

EPCC Men’s, Women’s Cross Country Teams Honored as ‘All Americans in the Classroom’

The El Paso Community College (EPCC) Women’s and Men’s Cross Country teams were named as Cross Country Scholar All- American Teams by the National Junior College Cross Country Coaches Association.

The EPCC Women’s team placed 4 th with a team GPA of 3.894. Cuyahoga Community College (Ohio) placed 1 st with a 3.954 GPA.  The women’s Scholar team consisted of: Karla Enriquez, Kelli Kirkpatrick, Shalet Mitei, Rose Jebet, Ocean Stevens and Michelle Renteria.

The EPCC men’s team placed 9 th with a GPA of 3.464.  Hesston Community College (Kansas) placed 1 st with a 3.911 GPA.  The men’s Scholar team consisted of:  Michael Flores, John Sandoval, Evan Gerdes and Brian Rowley.

Those nominated had to have participated at the Regional or National Cross Country meets held in the fall of 2016.  The nominated individual student athletes had to have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.40 or better for the fall 2016 semester.
