Video – TNTM: Ready Player One movie review

Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One is huge trip down Nostalgia Avenue. There are so many 1980’s and 1990’s references thrown in there that something should touch your childhood memories. I was skeptical of them being able to cram all of the references as well as character stories into a two and a half hour movie.

If you’ve read the book (like me) you will notice right from the beginning that the movie does not follow the outline from the book. That didn’t prevent me from enjoying the movie. The book and movie kinda end up at the same location, they just take different paths to get there.

If you did not read the book (like Patrick) you will probably still like the movie. Great action scenes, good CGI, and plenty of nostalgia for your eyes to feast on.

Ready Player One didn’t disappoint in the throwback department. There are so many pop culture references on the screen, you can’t see them all in one viewing. I know when the Bluray comes out I will be making heavy use of the pause button just to take in all the nostalgia on the screen.

If you liked the book, just go into the movie realizing it is kinda like an abridged version of the book. If you haven’t read the book… no worries. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

Patrick and I both recommend watching Ready Player One. You don’t have to take our word for it though. We asked other audience members for their views on the movie. It was an overwhelmingly positive response from all of them.

Go to Alamo Drafthouse, order a bowl of bottomless popcorn, and enjoy your trip down memory lane.

TNTM: Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One discussion

Ready Player One is a well written sci-fi novel by Ernest Cline. The story is set in 2044 in a world wrecked by an energy crisis. It follows Wade Watts search for an Easter eggs in a virtual reality game. The person that discovers the final Easter Egg will inherit a huge fortune.

The book has been made into a feature film directed by Steven Spielberg. It is scheduled to premiere on March 30, 2018.

The plot is the creator (James Halliday) of a virtual reality simulator world called the OASIS has passed away. He was a huge fan of 1980’s era technology and pop-culture. His will states there are Easter eggs hidden throughout the OASIS that will lead to a final Easter Egg. The person that discovers the final egg will receive Halliday’s entire fortune as well as ownership of the OASIS.

.The book/movie really resonates with those of us that remember the 1980’s. There are countless throwback references that make you smile when you remember them. From the looks of the trailer, they are cramming in a multitude of those references as well. This will be one of those movies you pause the Bluray so you can look at all the 80’s stuff on screen.

Ready Player One was a New York Times bestseller. Rebecca Serle of The Huffington Post said it “has it all – nostalgia, trivia, adventure, romance, heart and, dare I say it, some very fascinating social commentary”. Jack and I both can’t wait to see this book brought to life on screen by Steven Spielberg, especially since there are references to his contributions to the 1980’s nerd culture.
