American Red Cross Receives $125k Grant from Andeavor for New Emergency Response Vehicle

On Wednesday the American Red Cross of El Paso and Southern New Mexico announced that it has been awarded a $125,000 grant from Andeavor to acquire a new, state-of-the-art, emergency response vehicle (ERV).

“When disaster strikes, Red Cross workers climb into emergency response vehicles and travel through impacted neighborhoods providing food, water and comfort to victims,” said David Chayer, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of El Paso and Southern New Mexico. “Thanks to the generous support of Andeavor, we’ll be able to add a new vehicle to our fleet that will help us reach even more people in need.”

The new emergency response vehicle will be fuel efficient, easier to drive with lower maintenance costs and provide ample storage room for food water and supplies. The new vehicles are designed to be adjustable and can adapt to disasters large and small.

For example, modular features allow the vehicle to quickly transform so that volunteers can either serve thousands of meals a day following a tornado or address the needs of a family displaced by a home fire.

“Andeavor is committed to collaborating with our stakeholders to create cleaner, safer, well-educated communities where we operate,” said VJ Smith, Government and Public Affairs Manager for Andeavor.  “We are proud to partner with the Red Cross to improve the safety of El Paso, our customers, our neighbors and the families of our nearly 500 employees.”

In 2014, the very first grant awarded by the Andeavor Foundation was to the Red Cross, and was used to purchase and deploy a next generation ERV.  Since then, the Foundation has helped the Red Cross acquire a total of five ERVs, including one for El Paso, in addition to two bloodmobiles.

“Our firefighters and our emergency management team know first-hand how valuable the Red Cross is to fire victims and disaster victims” said El Paso Fire Chief Mario D’Agostino. “This donation from Andeavor will help the Red Cross and disaster victims here in El Paso and wherever help is needed.”

“The work done by the American Red Cross is so critical to any community” said El Paso County Judge Ruben Vogt.  “It’s important, and a priority of mine, that our region we be as prepared as possible to respond to any emergency at a moment’s notice.  Andeavor’s generous grant to the American Red Cross of El Paso and Southern New Mexico allows for the purchase of a new state-of-the-art Emergency Response Vehicle, which not only exhibits a true sense of community collaboration between the public and private sector but ensures we are as prepared as possible in the event of an emergency.  Emergencies know no boundaries and this is a perfect example of how working together ensures a safer more vibrant community for us all.”

“The American Red Cross plays a critical role helping people in El Paso County” said El Paso County Commissioner Carlos Leon. “This generous gift from Andeavor will make a difference in the lives of disaster victims here in our county, across our region and across the country.”

“I know our local Red Cross does great work helping people in times of emergencies” said State Representative Cesar Blanco.  “I have seen their work here in El Paso and across Texas and I know this donation from Andeavor will make an immediate, positive impact for disaster victims.”

The Red Cross currently has more than 320 emergency response vehicles across 49 states that help people in need after disasters of any size, whether it’s coastal communities devastated by hurricanes or home fires in the El Paso and southern New Mexico area. Over the next decade, the Red Cross expects to replace and potentially increase the current fleet while saving millions of dollars by switching to a more effective vehicle platform with reduced maintenance costs.
