Date set for First Ever Mental Health in Motion Race

Family Service of El Paso is proud to announce the Mental Health in Motion Race, A Paso Del Norte Foundation Challenge Fund Event, which will take place at 9am on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at El Paso Community College Valle Verde Campus.

All proceeds from the race support a broader cause of providing access to mental health services delivered by Family Service of El Paso, which has been providing counseling services to local families since 1892. Studies show that one in five Americans suffer from mental illness.

About 16.3% of Hispanic adults are living with a mental health condition. Furthermore, the use of mental health services tends to be lower among multicultural groups often due to less access to treatment, language barriers, stigma and lower rates of health insurance.

“The Family Service of El Paso is dedicated to addressing the mental and medical health needs of our community,” said Family Service of El Paso Director of Clinical Projects Celeste Nevarez. “A community run is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness for mental health while promoting the benefits of physical fitness to help manage our total wellness.”

By launching the first annual race, the local nonprofit and board members look forward to raising awareness about mental health and garnering support to continue to deliver services in El Paso.

The registration for the 5k or Mile Fun Run is $25; registration is $20 for individuals running in teams of four or more. Discounts are available for EPCC students and military with ID. Youth registration (13-18) for the 5k or Mile Run is $10 and includes a T-shirt. Children under 13 may run for free with a registered entry and will be invited to race in the Kid’s Dash. T-shirt not included for free race entry, but will be available for purchase.

Trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female winner of the 5k; top-three finishers in their respective age groups will receive medals.

Pre-race packet pickup will take place from 12 to 5pm Thursday, March 31st at Up and Running West, 3233 N. Mesa (915) 532-3780. Packet pickup and registration will also take place from 8am-7pm Friday, April 1st at Family Service of El Paso, 6040 Surety Drive.

Race day registration and packet pick up begins at 8am at EPCC.
