Three UTEP Men’s Golfers Honored for Academics

NORMAN, Ok.- Three UTEP men’s golfers were recognized for their outstanding performance in the classroom as well as the golf course.

Returning seniors Charles Corner and Nicklas Pihl along with recent graduate Frederik Dreier were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for Division I, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Wednesday. The trio was among the new record number of student-athletes that earned All-America Scholar status, which totaled 260 in Division I.

To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade point average of 3.2. High moral character and good standing at the potential recipient’s university is also factored in.

Corner, Pihl, and Dreier were all named to the 2016-17 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, for keeping a GPA of 3.0 or better, and have maintained their stay on the honor roll since arriving at UTEP.

Two-time C-USA Golfer of the Year Dreier recorded a team-leading 71.4 stroke average in 13 tournaments while Corner, a C-USA second team selection, finished the year with a 72.6 stroke average while participating in 12 tournaments. Pihl, competing in 12 tournaments, finished the year with a 74.0 stroke average.

The trio was also part of the 2017 Conference USA Championship team and made the trip to the NCAA Washington Regional.

UTEP Golfer Ranked Among Top in Europe

NORMAN, Okla.- UTEP men’s golfer Frederik Dreier dropped five spots in the most recent Arnold Palmer Cup rankings. The senior, previously ranked No. 4, is now No. 9 among European collegiate golfers.

The final ranking for the June 9-11 match will be released March 9, with the teams announced March 16.

Started in 1997, the Arnold Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition that puts the top collegiate men’s United States players against the top collegiate men’s European players in a match play format with team, mixed team and singles sessions.

The rankings were first introduced in 2013 to select the first six golfers for each side, with the remaining four being selected by a committee and a coach for the Americans and two committee selections, a coach’s pick and the R&A Scholars Tournament champions for the European side.

UTEP Golf 2016-17 - 089Dreier, a Birkeroed, Denmark native, carded 4-over 228 (72-74-74) to mark a tie for 47th at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii on February 17. The Miners finished in a tie for ninth as a team at the tournament.

The reigning Conference USA Golfer of the Year, Dreier fired a two-over-par 215 (69-77-69) to finish tied for sixth at the Arizona Intercollegiate in January, leading the UTEP squad. The senior registered four top 10 finishes in five tournaments during the fall, including two runner-up showings at the Fighting Irish Classic and the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate that earned him a C-USA Golfer of the Week honor (Oct. 19). His finish at the Fighting Irish Classic helped the team secure the title while he tallied 16 birdies. The senior boasts a 70.2 scoring average and helped his team to three tournament championships.

The Arnold Palmer Cup uses Golfstat’s NCAA Player Ranking as a base and awards points for wins and high finishes and a negative bonus for poor finishes. Strength of schedule is also factored in.

The 20th annual event will tee off June 9-11 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia.

Dreier will join his team at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson on Monday. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.

UTEP Sweeps C-USA Golfer of the Week Honors

UTEP’s Frederik Dreier and Lily Downs were named the C-USA Men’s and Women’s Golfer of the Week, respectively, on Wednesday.

A senior from Birkeroed, Denmark, Dreier carded a 10-under-par 203 (68-69-66) to take second place at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces on Tuesday.  He finished one stroke behind the tournament champion, and the Miners finished second to champion Grand Canyon.

Dreier registered his second consecutive runner-up showing after also landing second at the Fighting Irish Classic Oct. 10-11. Overall, this marked his third top-10 finish in four tournaments this season. This is Dreier’s first C-USA Player of the Week award this year and third of his career.

 Downs, a sophomore from Kirklevington, Yarm, UK, won her first individual title and led UTEP to the team championship at the Lady Redwolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. on Tuesday.

It was the Miners’ first tournament title since May of 2011.  Downs shot career-low 71’s in the first and second round on Monday and maintained her first-place standing on Tuesday despite battling heavy winds.  She concluded the tournament with a two-over-par 218 (71-71-76), four strokes better than the runner-up finisher.

It marked Downs’ second consecutive top-five finish, as she tied for fifth place at the NM State Aggie Invitational Oct. 4-5. This is the first C-USA Player of the Week award of her career.
