Immunize El Paso Highlights Importance of Immunization as Kids Return to School

As tens of thousands of El Paso-area children head back to school, it’s also time to make sure they are up-to-date on their vaccines.

To celebrate the importance of immunizations for people of all ages – and make sure children are protected with all the vaccines they need as they go back to school – Immunize El Paso is joining with partners nationwide in recognizing August as National Immunization Awareness Month.

The local non-profit will be hosting immunization clinics throughout the borderland to allow opportunity to ensure children are immunized prior to returning to school. Immunize El Paso provides low-cost immunization services to qualifying children under the Texas Vaccines for Children Program.

Clinics are also able to accept Texas & New Mexico Medicaid as well as many major insurance plans. No child is denied services due to inability to pay.

“Getting children all of the vaccines recommended by CDC’s immunization schedule is one of the most important things parents can do to protect their children from serious diseases,” said Dusty Warden, outreach coordinator for Immunize El Paso. “If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to check to find out what vaccines your child needs.”

Vaccines protect against a number of serious and potentially life-threatening diseases.

When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk for diseases and can also spread diseases to others in their classrooms and community – including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated, and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer or other health conditions.

Visit any of our clinics or outreach locations to find out which vaccines are recommended for them before going back to school.

Parents can find out more about the recommended vaccines at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/ or immunizeelpaso.org or call 915-881-1100.

EPFD, Dept of Health Announce June’s “Vaccinations for Health” Program Dates

The program “Vaccinations for Health” that teams up the El Paso Fire Department with the El Paso Health Department to provide free influenza and pneumonia vaccines, blood pressure and glucose screenings and colorectal screening kits will start again in June at the following dates and locations.

“This flu season started later than usual, but with lots of momentum and severity,” says Robert Resendes, Health Department Director. “As such, it’s still both prudent and timely to be immunized against this flu season’s viruses. This season’s vaccine has proven to be effective against the predominant strains.”

Remember that the service is FREE to residents of El Paso and Hudspeth County who are 18 and over and do not have medical insurance or are on Medicaid. We are encouraging residents who meet these guidelines to take advantage of the program.

The goal of the program is to increase the wellness of our community who do not have access to these services.

For more information, residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 or visit www.ephealth.com
