TNTM: IDW Publishing Ghostbusters Crossing Over discussion

Most people are familiar with the Ghostbusters. You either saw the original movies, watched the cartoons, read the comics, watched the new movie, or any combination of the aforementioned. No matter how you were introduced to the Ghostbusters you usually were a fan. There has always been debate as to which version of the Ghostbusters is best. Now thanks to IDW Publishing we get to see them ALL in the same comic book series!

According to the publisher, every single Ghostbuster that has ever appeared will appear in the upcoming eight-issue IDW crossover series Ghostbusters: Crossing Over. The Ghostbusters: Crossing Over creative team consists of Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening, and Luis Antonio Delgado. These guys have a long history with the Ghostbusters franchise.

The story begins when the Ghostbusters lose control of an inter-dimensional portal. This is the portal that allowed them to communicate with spirits and Ghostbusters in alternate dimensions. It will take the concerted effort of all the Ghostbusters in order to contain the breach.

“This story has something for everyone who has ever loved an iteration of the Ghostbusters,” Burnham said in a press release. “The Prime team from the original movies? There. The Real Ghostbusters? Present. The Extreme team? Accounted for. Not to mention the characters from the video games, the 2016 movie, and the originals we’ve created for the comics! If you don’t like one character, don’t worry, we have others! BUNCHES of others.”

“The biggest challenges from an artistic perspective is emulating the styles of the Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, Sanctum of Slime, and any other teams that may pop up,” Schoening said. “Not only do we want to honor the distinct look of the characters, but also the backgrounds and ghouls. Luckily and gratefully, we have already had a chance to play with many of those characters in previous books.”

Ghostbusters: Crossing Over #1 will be on the shelves in March 2018.

TNTM Movie Discussion: Ghostbusters 2016

Ghostbusters 2016 movie discussion

Jack and Troy from discuss the upcoming Ghostbusters movie.

Ghostbusters is an upcoming American supernatural comedy film. It is a reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise. It is directed by Paul Feig and written by Katie Dippold and Feig. It stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig,Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as the title characters. The film is scheduled for a July 15, 2016 release.

Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. A few years later Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University.  Her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. When ghosts invade Manhattan Gilbert reunites with Yates.  They also team up with a nuclear engineer, Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) and a subway worker Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones).  It is up to them to save the world from a mysterious evil and powerful demon known as Rowan (Neil Casey) who can exercise control over human forms.

The cast is as follows:

  • Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates, a published author on the subject of the paranormal
  • Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert, a professor at Columbia University, who co-authored the book with Yates
  • Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzmann, a nuclear engineer and Yates’ new partner
  • Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan, an NYC subway worker who stumbles across the main supernatural threat in the film and becomes a new member of the team
  • Chris Hemsworth as Kevin, the Ghostbusters’ receptionist
  • Neil Casey as Rowan, a mysterious evil powerful demon
  • Andy García as the Mayor of New York City
  • Charles Dance
  • Michael K. Williams as Hawkins
  • Elizabeth Perkins
  • Cecily Strong
  • Matt Walsh as Rourke
  • Pat Kiernan as a News Anchor

There are several notable cameos:

  • Bill Murray
  • Dan Aykroyd
  • Sigourney Weaver
  • Ernie Hudson
  • Annie Potts
  • Ozzy Osbourne

Prior to the remake various scripts and ideas for a third movie in the Ghostbusters series had long been planned. These ideas included one in which Bill Murray’s character was transformed into a ghost went to hell. Bill Murray remained uncommitted to the project and it was decided to make a reboot instead. The project was officially announced in 2014 with Paul Feig announced as the director. Feig has stated that he was partly inspired by the TV series The Walking Dead. Feig tweeted a picture announcing the main cast of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in January 2015, although it initially was unclear if the cast had been officially decided at that point. Emma Stone was approached but declined partly because “a franchise was a big commitment.” Cecily Strong at one was also considered for a role.

Ghostbusters: The Board Game includes three episodic campaigns that bring players together in a unified battle against all of the ghosts from the Ghostbusters past. The story is laid out in the manual. It tells of a young woman who has accidentally freed Idulnas, the third minion of Gozer.

Idulnas has emptied the Ghostbusters Ecto Containment Unit, freeing all of the ghosts they had captured up to that point. In a dire warning of what is to come, Idulnas proclaims “I bring the vengeance of every being you’ve ever captured or banished, Ghostbusters. I bring you Hell itself.”

It appears that the city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria. With that tone set, let’s jump in!

Each player assumes the role of one of the four Ghostbusters – Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, and Winston Zeddemore. Each player is granted two action points (three if their character is Level 3 or higher), which can be used to move, drive, deposit trapped ghosts, remove slime, or enter into combat. Combat can be initiated when a ghost is within your line of sight (within three spaces of your character).

Each character can be leveled up throughout each campaign in order to unlock new abilities that can be used to benefit the team on any given mission, to move around the board more quickly, or to grant advanced ghost-fighting attacks. The base Level for each character allows for individual XP increases in varied situation (for example, Peter gains 1 XP when slimed by a ghost on his turn). The highest Level is 5and adds perks for the entire team (Egon gives the ability for all Ghostbusters to reroll the Movement Die once for every failed Proton Roll).

It’s designed in a way to encourage cooperative play throughout the course of the game, not only in achieving the desired outcome but also in gradually contributing to the strength increase of your teammates in order to make the entire group stronger. XP does not deplete between scenarios within the same campaign, ensuring that each player has leveled up their character in anticipation of any given episode’s final boss. Unfortunately, there is a notable balancing issue with leveling up. During one playthrough, for example, my teammate had already maxed out his XP with Stantz by the end of the second scenario.

Each session can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours through the merging of multiple scenarios. The board is comprised of 10 two-sided tiles that are laid out in specific orientations based on the scenario being played.
The design is attractive, and the coloring makes it simple to identify challenges and barriers at a glance. Each scenario has the Ghostbusters tasked with closing gates, among other tasks, in order to prevent new ghosts from being able to spill from the Spirit World onto Earth.
At the end of each round an event die is rolled. This determines a specific action that will take place from one of the gates on the board with the event determined by whether the gate in question is open or closed. These events change from one scenario to another.
In addition to the 15 included individual scenarios, there is also a random scenario generator available through Cryptozoic’s website. This can be tailored to your group’s level.
